We had a blast, the weather was absolutely perfect and the scenery (of course) was fantastic.
Not much of a turnout - only six of us (Myself & Jackson, Scottishlass, Indyfella, Daniel4021 and former CS member Heatherhoney) from an early guesstimation of 18 to 20 - but we all hit it off great.
The food was delicous - owing to the rather small turnout and the fact that we'd ordered food for a BIG turnout - we had both lunch and supper and Jackson and I will eating 'Buddy's Barbecue' leftovers until well into next spring. With barbecue beef, pork and chicken, 'tater' salad, baked beans, chips and homemade sassafras tea as well as other refreshments, we all pretty much ate until we nearly burst.
Our waterfight(s), while not spectacular, were nonetheless fun and "refreshing" and I discovered that Scottishlass is deadly with a supersoaker -- even while laughing so hard that she couldn't see straight! Frisbees and shuttlecocks filled the air (and littered the ground!) as our bodies tried to remember how they worked when we were young and invincible.
In the early evening, we took a trip down to the river and Daniel4021 and Scottishlass both took short canoe trips of about a mile down the beautiful and scenic Clinch river, personally guided by the Kansan.
Our guest of honor - our chihuahua, "Miss Patty Ann" - also had a great time, being well spoiled by all and even rode on Scottishlass' lap during the canoe trip.
Bunches and bunches of pictures were taken and will be posted as they become available. Heather has the ability to make a video from our still photos, so I guess it behooves all of us who took cameras to get the pics to Heather as soon as we can.
All in all, it was a fantastic time and those who couldn't make it sure missed out on something great. There's a good chance that we'll try it again next year, probably in July, but it'll be more of a potluck, rent-a-cabin for the weekend sort of thing rather than the 'self-catered' picnic we had yesterday just to lessen the stress and financial burden on the planners.
Darn, but ya'll sure missed out on some fun, fun times!
(Now, Anybody wanna' come over this morning and help me unload the Ramcharger?)
Now, grab yer tired butt, some sunscreen (or a hat - I'm looking out for your own best interests, here!lol) and drag yourself down to Tennessee. Since lostpoet4u had to cancel, I'm looking for a fishing/canoeing partner for tomorrows' float trip down the Clinch River!
Geez! Just when I get to thinking that I'm reasonably intelligent, happier than I've ever been in my life and secure in my beliefs and freedoms, along comes somebody to point out that, in reality, my beliefs suck, I have no freedom and I'm really miserable but just too damn dumb to know it.
Screw that! You're as happy as you allow yourself to be. I'm sorry, but I'm damned if I'm going to tote around a guilty conscience just so somebody else can feel better about themselves! Have a nice day everyone!
Ok, folks, it's our 1st anniversay and I've been home about an hour. I'm going to trust that you'll all be able to deal with anything that comes your way, so I'm going to shut off the darn computer and spend some quality time with the woman who makes my life worth living!
Pssst! Promise not to tell and I'll send a couple of 'aliens' up to help on the hills - It'll only cost you a pound of beans and a 5th of Tequila! (Not sure what you'll have to pay them, but I hear they work cheap!)
I recently spent two winters living in a 10X14 "cookhouse" with no running water, a wood stove for heat and cooking, using candle lanterns for lighting and the outhouse was 40 yards away. I have yet to find a modern appliance that I couldn't live without in a pinch.
Hmmm... The internal combustion engine rendered horses obsolete, but the Kentucky Derby is still one of the biggest moneymakers of all times. And I've got friends with ranches out West that still do the majority of their range work from horseback.
I'm sure there will eventually come a day when the internal combustion engine is no longer a viable source for powering the "motoring public," but I sincerely doubt that it'll be in our lifetimes.
Just a note to those who ARE still planning to come:
Better darn sure bring your appetites! We've ordered fixins' for 25-30 folks and now we've had more than a third cancel in the past couple of days, so there's gonna' be PLENTY to eat!
We'll be expecting you to come back for 2nds, 3rds, 4ths and 5ths, so bring a friend, bring your appetite and leave the damn diet at home!
Yep, you actually got it right twice! (I'm sooooo proud of you!) I got basically the same message from her, but still have my fingers crossed mightily.
Wow. You'd hate our place - we've got to go east and a little south down the driveway off our ridge just to get to a road that will take us either north by northwest, south by southeast, east or west. To get to the picnic site, you have to go either North or South (depending on which direction you're coming from) on I-75 and then take highway '441 South' which really runs more or less East/West (except for the curves which mostly go north and south) 'til you cross the dam. I guess what I'm trying to say is that here in East Tennessee, it's tough to go any direction without going some other direction first.
Being from Kansas, it took me a long time to get used to it, but now I can actually find my way around pretty good and I haven't gotten lost in almost 3 days!
Well, we've been talking about it for a couple of months now (had 2 other threads on it - 1 with a couple of pics of the picnic site) and the sign-up thread was started on July 12th... Not sure how you missed it, but like Indy says, "Might as well come on down!"
If it's a hit, there's a chance that we might try it again next year - probably in July when more folks can make it - no guarantees, but we have tossed the idea around.
I'm all set, Bev! It won't take nearly as long to re-load my small ones as it will your big one and I can still defend myself with one hand while I'm re-filling with the other!
He's trying to break Mark Spitz' record of 7 gold medals in swimming. I don't think he's an alien, though since you have to a citizen of the U.S. to be on the team.
Never heard 'em called that, but I know of a couple of "No tell Motels" in the Denver area where the rooms are rented by the hour rather than by the night.
I'd offer to look up some listings for you, but something tells me you already know waaaaay more about them than I do.
