RE: FBI Asked To Probe Obama 'Vote Changing' Machines

I sure hope so. That would single handedly guarantee a Dem victory not to mention it would sound the death knell of the Republican party. The USA has had quite enough Bushes already thank you.
BTW, the Tea Party is irrelevant. RIP.

Shades of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of March 25, 1911

*UPDATE*

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AFP)--Bangladesh police arrested overnight three managers of a factory where a fire killed 110 people. "All three are mid-level managers of Tazreen. Survivors told us that they did not allow the workers to escape the fire, saying that it was a routine fire drill. There are also allegations that they even padlocked doors," Dhaka police chief Habibur Rahman said Wednesday. The factory makes clothes for international brands including Wal-Mart (WMT), European chain C&A and the Hong Kong-based Li & Fung (0494.HK) company. The owner of the Tazreen factory Delwar Hossain has been questioned about alleged violations of building rules, according to Rahman. Two government inquiries are trying to establish a cause of the fire. It is the worst factory blaze to hit Bangladesh's garment industry, which employs 3 million.

I had an encounter with a pretty blonde nurse

Thanks, I think it's best not to say "will you go out with me" rather come up with an activity that she might like to do so it doesn't seem so official like a date.
Oh well, nothing beats a failure but a try.

I had an encounter with a pretty blonde nurse

I had a minor medical proceedure done about 10 days ago and she was the one who did the EKG etc to make sure I wouldn't croak under anesthesia. We talked about lots and my home made wine. I promised her a bottle.
Today I finally brought the bottle of wine to where she worked.

Hi, how are you?
I'm fine how are you?
I brought the bottle of wine I told you about.
Oh wow did you really make this?
Oh yes, I make a batch every 2-3 years. I'll teach you how to make wine if you like.
Really, that would be cool.
Yeah I usually make about 15 gallons at a time and we can just make an extra 5 gallons for you.
Oh that would be awesome.
Do you like flea markets and stuff like that? There's a big indoor flea market about 20 minutes up the interstate, I'd like to take you there.
Oh gee I'll have to ask my fiance'
Ouch. Oh well, at least I wont be adding another item to my woulda shoulda coulda list. The offer about the wine still stands.
Thanks, I have to get back to work bye bye.

Man you sure have a talent for going from A to Z and skipping 24 letters in between. In 1911 275 young women died because their workplace was totally unsafe and they had no way to escape except the choice of jumping to their deaths or burning to death. Doors were locked, unlocked doors opened IN instead of out and couldn't be opened due to the crush of humanity trying to excape, fire escapes collapsed, etc. I never said anything about unions.

HONG KONG--A fire engulfed a garment factory in Bangladesh that manufactured garments for Li & Fung Ltd. killing at least 120 workers and raising concerns about working conditions at plants that manufacture goods for the Hong Kong-based sourcing giant. The incident deals another blow to Li & Fung, which is the buying agent for a variety of goods, including toys and clothes, for retailers such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) and Target Corp. (TGT). Li & Fung has been struggling to maintain earnings growth amid the growing trend for retailers to buy more of its products directly from factories instead of sourcing their products from middlemen. A sluggish global economy and price competition are putting pressure on the world's middlemen. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has canceled much of a deal in which Hong Kong's Li & Fung Ltd. would supply goods for the U.S.-based retailer's overseas stores, people close to the companies said in September, as Wal-Mart moves to buy more of its products directly from factories. Other Li & Fung clients, including baby-clothes maker Carter's Inc. (CRI) and Gymboree Corp., also have said they plan to buy more products directly from factories.

The fire swept through an eight-story garment factory near Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, police and fire department officials said. The blaze broke out at the Tazreen Fashion building in the Ashulia industrial area, 15 miles north of Dhaka, on Saturday night. Locals said panic-stricken garments workers jumped from windows as the fire spread and reported seeing charred bodies being brought out from the blackened building. Some workers claimed the building's fire escape route was blocked and guards had failed to open the main gate after smoke engulfed the building. This is the latest in a series of deadly accidents at Bangladeshi clothing factories in recent years. Garments workers, who sew clothes for some of the biggest U.S. and European brands, have been demanding better pay and working conditions. The factory is owned by Tazreen Fashion Ltd., a unit of the Tuba Group, which makes products for Wal-Mart and other companies in the U.S. and Europe. Tuba Group's branded buyers include Wal-Mart and Carrefour SA (CA.FR), according to a document on the company's website. Officials at Tarzreen Fashion and its parent company Tuba Group couldn't immediately be reached for comments. The cause of the blaze wasn't immediately clear and authorities have ordered an investigation, according to local media. In a statement, Li & Fung confirmed that it had placed orders for garments with Tazreen Fashion in Bangladesh that were being manufactured at the premises where the fire occurred. The goods were sourced for Kids Headquarters, a unit of its U.S. division. "We are very distressed and saddened by the deaths of workers and wish to express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims," a Li & Fung spokeswoman said, adding that the company is participating in aid efforts for immediate relief and is matching the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association's financial assistance by pledging 100,000 Bangladeshi Takas (US$1,200) to each victim's family. "We are in contact with the owner of the factory and we will be carrying out our own investigation into the circumstances which led to the fire," it said.

Is this what Christmas has become?

I had to deliver a load of bamboo fire starter bundles to a guy in Richmond and stopped in Best Buy to get some AAA batteries. I walked all around the store and felt like I was dropped into the 23rd century Nothing in that store had any relevance for me. I finally asked an emp if they sold batteries and he said he thinks there's a display over by the checkout. Yep there was, $8.49 for an 8 pack. I walked out and found a Dollar Tree next door. I got 16 batteries for 3 bucks.

RE: A Canadian speaks out (1973)

WOW wow It sure is nice to hear appreciation for whatever good we do from our much loved northern neighbor.
As a teenager of 17 I spent 7 weeks in a tiny little town in Quebec called Causapscal. I stayed with the manager of a lumber company and his wife. They fed me and took me trout fishing and even with them when they went out dancing and drinking (those Canadians know how to party)laugh My uncle, actually a friend of the family who I road up to Canada with, stayed with his sister in Rimouski during that time.
Mon Unc passed away about 3 years after that. He was the father I never had.

RE: Egypts New dictator

A stunning development!! After he brokered a cease fire between Israel and Hamas, I was feeling tremendous admiration for this man and was happy that Egypt was firmly on the path to greatness and prosperity and peace. That's all gone now. I guess it's true, "a Leopard can't change its spots."

He must be very stupid because he had it all. The world was behind him 100%, Now he is viewed as nothing more than another petty dictator. What an idiot.

If I could say one thing to the Egyptian people it would be this:

You Voted For Him!dunno

RE: Spain should leave EU

Not sure about Spain but Greece should lead the way out the rear service door by the loading dock, and they should do it at night so nobody will see them.
I think I heard a while back that Greece can't even go back to the Drachma because all the plates to print them were destroyed but I may be in error.

The first Thanksgiving

"Until the early 1800s, Thanksgiving was considered to be a regional holiday celebrated solemnly through fasting and quiet reflection.

But the 19th century had its own Martha Stewart, and it didn't take her long to turn New England fasting into national feasting. Sarah Josepha Hale, editor of the popular Godey's Lady's Book, stumbled upon Winslow's passage and refused to let the historic day fade from the minds - or tables - of Americans. This established trendsetter filled her magazine with recipes and editorials about Thanksgiving.

It was also about this time - in 1854, to be exact - that Bradford's history book of Plymouth Plantation resurfaced. The book increased interest in the Pilgrims, and Mrs. Hale and others latched onto the fact he mentioned that the colonists had killed wild turkeys during the autumn.

In her magazine Hale wrote appealing articles about roasted turkeys, savory stuffing, and pumpkin pies - all the foods that today's holiday meals are likely to contain.

In the process, she created holiday "traditions" that share few similarities with the original feast in 1621.

In 1858, Hale petitioned the president of the United States to declare Thanksgiving a national holiday. She wrote: "Let this day, from this time forth, as long as our Banner of Stars floats on the breeze, be the grand Thanksgiving holiday of our nation, when the noise and tumult of worldliness may be exchanged for the length of the laugh of happy children, the glad greetings of family reunion, and the humble gratitude of the Christian heart."

The first Thanksgiving

PLYMOUTH, MASS.
Everyone knows about the Pilgrims and the Indians, right? How the two groups gathered peacefully in Plymouth, Mass., to feast on juicy turkeys and colorful pumpkin pies.

The trouble is, almost everything we've been taught about the first Thanksgiving in 1621 is a myth. The holiday has two distinct histories - the actual one and a romanticized portrayal.

Today, Americans celebrate a holiday based largely on the latter, whose details of turkey and cranberry sauce decorating one long table stem from the creative musings of a magazine editor in the mid-1800s.

The true history has been a difficult one to uncover. Staff at Plimoth Plantation, which occupies several acres on the outskirts of the city of Plymouth, just north of Cape Cod, have been in the vanguard of researching the event. But a big obstacle remains: Everything historians know today is based on two passages written by colonists.

Read the rest here:

Years ago a friend and I drove up to Plymouth Plantation on Thanksgiving day because we felt it was the most perfect place to spend the day in the whole world. As we drove east through Massachusetts, on the local state roads, I noticed the incorporation dates posted along the road as we went from town to town. The dates began in the 1700's and kept getting earlier the closer we got to Plymouth culminating in 1621. I made a mental note of just how "civilisation" spread from Plymouth sort of an early version of urban sprawl.
While we were there, we happened upon a small group of Native Americans demonstrating against "white invaders" with signs like "White man go home you stayed too long". I tried to engage one of the demonstrators but he wouldn't talk to me, too bad because I agreed with him to some degree.

We also toured the replica of the "Mayflower", the boat that brought the Pilgrims across the Atlantic ocean. Let me tell you, you gotta be desperate to venture out to sea with you whole family in that top heavy craft. It's even smaller than you think.jackolantern

RE: What happened?

I have a few ideas that may have contributed to CS going downhill. In no particular order:

Facebook. It's like there is a back channel where people go to gossip about members on here and sometimes they bring their agenda into these threads and those of us who don't go on facebook don't know WTH they are talking about feel excluded and just say screw it and leave.

Stupid thread titles posted by people who have really nothing to say.

Politics (I'm guilty of this) drive people away esp people outside the US probably get totally bored with hearing about another countries political BS. Have you noticed how many of the most active posters in the political threads have disappeared since the election?

Is this what Christmas has become?

I'm not a religious person so I don't celibrate Cristmas. That would only make me a hypocrite, but even if I did, I surely wouldn't get involved with all this BS about Black Friday or all this insanity about shopping for presents and going into debt doing it. Just read the following and if it doesn't turn your stomach you just may be one of the nut jobs that will be out chasing your tail like a rabid dog.

"Wal-Mart Stores Inc., is promoting its promise to match other retailers' prices through the holidays. But even bigger news is that for the first time this year, Target and Best Buy will match web retailers. Some experts predict the plans will backfire on retailers as customers go to extreme measures to dig up low prices. Sheri Petras, chief executive of CFI Group, a consulting company that measures customer satisfaction, speculated this week to the Wall Street Journal: "Can you imagine being on the checkout line at Target with 20 items and you're scanning products on your phone to find out the gum is 12 cents less at Amazon? "she said. "Can you imagine standing behind that person in line?" Don't worry about that adding to your Black Friday headache. It doesn't appear that any major retailers will match competitors' Black Friday prices. Still, it's good to keep these policies in mind throughout the season. Wal-mart: Stores honors other prices offered at local stores (not online retailers) on exact items, including buy-one-get-one-free and loyalty card deals. Shoppers do not need to show other stores' ads. Target Corp.: Stores honor listed prices of exact items at other retailers or Target.com through Dec. 24. Shoppers must show Target.com receipts or other stores' current ads or catalogs. Stores also match prices of exact items from Amazon.com, Walmart.com, BestBuy.com, ToysRUs.com or BabiesRUs.com. -- must be those retailers, not third-party sellers -- through Dec. 16. Stores won't match prices from stores or online retailers offered on Nov. 22 through 24, or on out-of-stock items. Best Buy Co. Inc.: Stores honors other prices offered at local stores and BestBuy.com on exact, in-stock items through Jan. 24. For appliances and electronics only, stores will match prices at 20 online competitors, including Target.com, Amazon.com, Walmart.com, HomeDepot.com and Lowes.com on. Best Buy won't match prices offered at any retailer between Nov. 22 and Nov. 26. Sears: Stores honor competitors' store and web prices on exact, in-stock items. Shoppers must show ad within 14 days of their Sears purchase. Online prices include charges for shipping and handling, but not delivery; also, online-only prices don't qualify. Sears doesn't honor others' Black Friday prices. Kmart: Stores honor competitors' store prices on exact, in-stock items, but not online prices."

RE: Thanksgiving Dinner

Home made cranberry relish and mashed Rutabaga was a tradition in my family. I sure miss those big family dinners but life goes on and you make the best of it.

Don't take you right to free speech for granted. You could live in India

MUMBAI (AFP)--Indian police said Monday they had arrested a woman for criticizing on Facebook the total shutdown of Mumbai after the death of politician Bal Thackeray, as well as a friend who "liked" the comment. The pair were due to appear in court later in the day charged under the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act, said Police Inspector Shrikant Pingle in the town of Palghar, north of Mumbai. "The two women will be produced in a local court later this afternoon. They are being charged for hurting religious sentiments," he said. They were arrested Sunday when a funeral procession attended by hundreds of thousands of supporters was held in Mumbai for Thackeray, the divisive founder of the right-wing Shiv Sena party. News of his death on Saturday afternoon brought the city to a virtual standstill for the weekend, with businesses shutting and taxis going off the roads, amid fears of violence by Thackeray's supporters. While his followers mourned, others were angered at the hold Shiv Sena exerted over India's financial capital. The 21-year-old arrested for her Facebook post was among many who aired opinions on social networking sites. "Her comment said people like Thackeray are born and die daily and one should not observe a 'bandh' (city shutdown) for that," Police Inspector Uttam Sonawane told the Mumbai Mirror. Despite widespread concerns, there were no reports of unrest in Mumbai itself on the day of the funeral of Thackeray, one of India's most polarizing party leaders, who was widely accused of stoking ethnic and religious violence. India in recent months has shown sensitivity to criticism of its politicians, sparking criticism in turn from freedom of speech campaigners. In September campaigners were outraged by the arrest in Mumbai on charges of sedition of a cartoonist for his anti-corruption drawings. The charges were later dropped.
