Pre Rock and Roll pop music

Glen Miller was huge during World War 2. He and his orchestra made a lot of really great music. This one is called Perfidia. It's been done by many many artists. Do a search for this song by the Four Aces to hear a much faster version of this song.

Oh heck, I found it for you.

Which do you prefer? I kinda like the Four Aces.

Pre Rock and Roll pop music

Eddie Fisher was quite popular before R&R took over the airwaves. He had a great voice and was quite a teenage heart throb. He must have had something to land Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor.

Pre Rock and Roll pop music

Please don't post any Rock & Roll or anything later than the mid 50's this thread is about the music choices people had before R&R hit the scene.
This is Patty Page doing Tennessee Waltz. You can see she is not lip syncing by how her chest heaves. Please also note what perfect pitch and breath control she had

No that wasn't me, I have an image to maintain.professor

RE: Changing oil filter without changing oil . is it useful ?

Modern engines and oils can go longer than 3000 miles(5280km). You can probably double that today. I change my oil and alternate between cleaning the filter and changing the filter.
I drive so little these days that I sometimes go 2 years between oil changes.

RE: Best Burger

OK As I recall there was a Backyard Burger place in Columbus when I worked in Hilliard or am I mistaken. I thought their burgers were excellent.
Of the ones in your poll I go with White Castle.

RE: Best Burger

How disappointing.
Backyard Burgers.

RE: Rosy expectations RE:US economic, financial and political recovery

Actually the US is doing reasonably well when compared to the Eurozone.
Steel production is a basic building block of a country's or region's economy.

"Impact of Economic Growth and Steel Demand on European Steelmakers
The International Monetary Fund decreased its growth projections for the eurozone to a negative growth rate, and a decrease of .3 percent. The IMF projected that Germany, the eurozone's strongest economy would grow .6% this year, and that France would grow at a .1 percent rate.

The European Union countries saw a 9.3 percent decline in steel demand last year, as the euro crisis weighed heavily on economic activities throughout the region. Steel demand in Europe is expected to shrink a further .5 percent this year."

"Impact of Economic Growth and Steel Demand on U.S. Steelmakers
The International Monetary Fund revised its growth projections for the U.S. economy, and indicated that America's economy will grow 1.9 percent this year.

The World Steel Association indicated that U.S. demand for steel increased 8.4 percent in 2012. This was primarily due to demand from the automotive and energy sectors and an increasingly resilient construction recovery. The demand for steel in the U.S. is expected to increase 2.7 percent this year to 99.3 million tons, and increase 2.9 percent to 100 million tons next year."

Common Cause President Bob Edgar passed away

Common Cause President Bob Edgar suffered a heart attack and died while exercising at his home in Virginia on Tuesday morning. He was 69 years old and by all appearances was in excellent health.

Bob was a man who lived his faith -- in God and our country -- every hour of every day. The energy, intellect and boundless good humor he brought to Common Cause revitalized our organization and returned it to the forefront of the democracy reform movement. His passing leaves a hole in our hearts.

We grieve today for his family, his many friends, our organization and ourselves. We are determined to honor his memory by continuing the work he pursued so passionately. That is the least we can do. As we carry on, we are reminded of an African proverb that was among Bob's favorites:

"If you want to walk fast, walk alone; but if you want to walk far, walk together."

RE: Rosy expectations RE:US economic, financial and political recovery

I defy you to search the web for anything that I cut & pasted in this thread. Furthermore, why don't you debate the points I made instead of attacking me and I would appreciate it if you stopped trying to pin labels on me.

RE: Rosy expectations RE:US economic, financial and political recovery

On a scale of 1 to 10 that comeback rates about a 3.0

I just heard that a helicopter detected his heat signature under the tarp in that boat.

It was a joke.

I wonder if they'll require a background check if you try to buy a pressure cooker at a yard sale?

RE: Who Is The Greatest Heavyweight Boxer To Have Ever Fought In The Ring???

I think Lennox Lewis deserves to be on that list. What a fight it would be between Ali and Lewis with both in their primes.

As fast and powerful as Tyson was there were few fighters around who could beat him. When Buster Douglas knocked Tyson out it was almost like watching a Ballet dancer. It's unbelievable that fight took place in 1990 that's 23 years ago.

RE: ORIGIN OF UNIVERSE: GOD / BIG BANG

The cliff note version is that IF the direction of light can be "bent" and totally stopped by gravity, to assert that it can't be slowed (demanded by the BBT) can't be true. Hence the question.
A steady state universe makes much more sense than an infinitely expanding universe.
People have an almost religious belief in the BBT which saddens me because once an idea becomes a belief, the scientific process come to an end.
I said that.

RE: Have you ever noticed?

I'll have to check your profile for spelling errors now.

RE: The Pledge of Allegiance of America

Yes Obama like to play golf, he also likes some pickup basketball but he isn't as obsessed with the game the way Eisenhower was. Ike practically lived on the golf course.

RE: Who Was The Most Talented Of The Beatles?

I always liked George the most, he had a quiet coolness about him. I never cared much for Ringo's drumming style because he actually had none, but in his defense he was a good accompanist drummer albeit rather pedestrian. John was a great writer "Imagine" was a classic. Together Paul & John were a great writing duo but I think John had the edge on Paul in that department.
The Beatles were a classic example of together they were greater than the sum of their parts.
With 20/20 hindsight it was a mistake for them to split up.

RE: Defector tells of harrowing experience.

Several years ago in a National Geographic special Lisa Ling traveled with a Nepalese eye doctor and secretly films what she can of life inside North Korea during her trip. It was amazing to watch the eye doctor restore eye sight to people who had been blind for years and they immediately walk up to pictures of (the dear leader) Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il to thank them for giving back their eye sight without a word of thanks to the Nepalese doctor. The most chilling scene was when one old woman pledged to work harder in the salt mines for the glory of Kim Jong-il for returning her eye sight.

Lisa Ling rightfully points out how a system of fear governs the country. If these people didn’t give thanks to the Kim regime, they and their whole families would have been sent to one of the massive concentration camps that Lisa Ling spent plenty of time covering. The funniest portion was when Lisa Ling visited a North Korean family and asked them if there was anything wrong with Kim Jong-il. The North Korean interpreter kept pretending he didn’t understand the question. Overall, definitely a must see documentary about life in North Korea.

Dengue Fever

My neighbor had a big cooler outside with six pockets in the lid to hold drink cups. They had a BBQ and left the cooler outside where it got rained on. Those little pockets filled up with water. About a week later I was outside doing who knows what and took a look at the cooler and every one of those water filled pockets had about 10 larvae wiggling around. I opened the lid which dumped the water onto the ground and killed about 60 mosquitoes in about 2 seconds. Sure was more efficient than swatting them on your arm while they are drinking your blood. Here's a related story I "dug up".

Dengue Fever

Mosquito season is about to start in the Northern Hemisphere and this year we have a new threat to worry about, Dengue Fever. As if Lyme disease isn't enough to worry about from those nasty little ticks and West Nile virus now this.
Anyway, Now is the time to check around the outside for anything that holds water especially dog bowls and rain barrels that don't have a screen on them because while you may not want to actively wage war on mosquitoes, you may be contributing to the problem by providing them with a place to breed. If you have an outside dog bowl for water, dump it out at least once a day. Your dog will be happy too to have fresh water to drink and any mosquito eggs that may be in the water will never survive out of water. Come on, you wouldn't want your dog taking a crap in your neighbors doorway, be a responsible dog owner and don't add to the mosquito population.

RE: Lets Blame America

I think if someone took a poll of ordinary Americans, people who are not affiliated with government or anything other than just trying to live a normal life, raise their children and be happy, the percentage of people who don't want to get involved in other countries problems would probably be over 90%. Unfortunately, the government is composed mostly of politicians and most of them used to be lawyers so to think they would be able to mind their own business is really asking a lot.

RE: ORIGIN OF UNIVERSE: GOD / BIG BANG

Anyone who's been on here for a few years knows my view on the Big Bang Theory. It is bogus. The universe is absolutely not expanding. This whole theory rests on a flawed assumption that the speed of light is finite, it is not. If light can be forced into a new direction by gravity (absolutely proven by astronomers 100's of times) and if light can be completely stopped again by intense gravity (evidenced by the existence of black holes) then how can it be impossible that light can also be slowed by gravity? This slowing of the speed of a light beam or particle or call it what you wish can explain the "Red Shift" of the light spectrum originating from a distant galaxy every bit as well as the "Doppler Effect". Decades ago scientists, in awe of Albert Einstein and the simplistic effect of the Doppler Effect (the change in pitch of a sound wave as the source passes by the observer like a train horn) bought into this Big Bang Theory and have spent about 80 years trying to prove it's correct with very little meaningful success.

RE: ORIGIN OF UNIVERSE: GOD / BIG BANG

All I know is I can't wait for the grape harvest so I can make another big batch of Cabernet Sauvignon. It's been a dry year so far so the sugar content should be reasonable high. I'm planning on about 20 gallons this year. Do you still make wine?

RE: Does God exist ?

When I was a kid I think I believed in god because my mother told me that he was real and being my mother I trusted everything she ever told me must be true. I also was a strong believer in Santa Claus. I remember having an argument with my friend Jimmy about Santa clause and gradually I had to agree that Santa probably wasn't real but make believe. Have you ever thought of the words "make believe"
MAKE
BELIEVE
say it slowly and you might get the message in those words. Ok so here I am, my belief in Santa clause was shattered. The whole story was a made up lie. What else was I told that was also a lie? I was thinking about this a few weeks ago. The creation of Santa clause has turned more people away from religion than anything else. Whoever created this Santa Claus myth created a fatal virus to the fairy tale of this god myth.
