RE: The American Left

Hey global warming denier, have you seen Lake Mead lately?

I'm amazed that someone who is seeing the effects of climate change right outside their door, still can't see the forest for the trees. What will it take for you to finally admit that you are wrong, your house bursting into flames and the fire department standing and watching it burn to the ground because they have no water to put it out?

RE: R.I.P. Marss aka Little Feather

Marss claimed to be the best roofer on earth and I have no evidence to prove otherwise. He was an interesting character no doubt about it. A little edgy or should I say he didn't keep his opinions to himself. I don't think he was overly fond of me for some reason, maybe it was our differing politics, who knows and who cares?

I wonder what caused him to have a fatal heart attack? He wasn't obese and must have been in good shape being a roofer. A bundle of shingles weighs 80 pounds, I know because I worked for a building supply co and have delivered tons of the stuff. It takes a strong person to lift a bundle of shingles, how many can climb a ladder with one?

The best tribute you can give to someone is to remember them and I will remember him. His time on earth didn't go unnoticed.

RE: Country Music Help Needed

First off "Four strong winds" by Neill Young is a beautiful song but I wouldn't classify it as country.
No list of country music would be complete without a big spoonful of David Allan Coe especially this one.

And this one. I'm not big on C&W but I do like this.

Don't forget a lot of Johnny Cash.

I am totally disgusted with the human race, a cancer on this planet

I remember years ago an article that documented the shipment of Rhino's to australia where they could live in peace and be free from the threat of poachers. I wonder how that plan is working and if this couldn't be done on a bigger scale. I don't think it was the "white" Rhino they were moving but the black rhino.
Does anybody remember this event?

RE: Obama......

Maybe instead of voting FOR someone you could vote AGAINST them. That's just as valid. I don't see how anybody can be proud of never voting. If you don't vote, you are giving your choice to somebody else.

RE: this sounds fishy to me

Listen to maddog, he's giving you good advice.

RE: Obama......

Hey TTom, I read your diatribe twice and could find not 1 reference to FDR anywhere in it. You must be slipping. BTW, have you heard they are looking into the creation of Social Security by FDR and think he may have over stepped his authority and they may overturn the law meaning everybody who got money from the goverment going all the way back to 1938 will be required to give all the money back even if they are already dead. The debt will fall on their children and grand children. You get a check from the gov every month don't ya Tom?

I'm kidding of course.

BTW, I bet you voted for GWB twice. He's the guy responsible for 100 times as many lives lost as Timothy McVeigh. Mcveigh got executed but Bush is walking around enjoying life. You must be proud.

RE: Obama......

Hey conrad is it true what I heard? The Swiss government is authorizing their air force to launch air strikes on ISIS? I also heard they are sending their elite army (all 17 of them) fully equipped with, not one, but two Swiss Army knives (in case some meanie jihadist takes the first one away from them). I heard too that, despite the rumors, the Swiss WILL be wearing combat boots and they will be supplied with enough alpen muesli to last a month.

RE: FEAR the ultimate weapon!

Man you would have gone insane in a job I once had. I worked for an outfit that cleaned restaurant exhaust systems. I had to crawl through ducts that were barely big enough to fit through. One times my drop light cought the fluff in the duct on fire and I either put the fire out with my bare hands or burn to death. Another time I was lowered from the roof of the Jack Tar hotel in Tampa 10 stories on a boatswains chair (that's a board on a rope) through the main exhaust duct for the 2 kitchens.

RE: What % of Americans know what the Talmud is?

The TalMud, simply another collection of musings and BS from the stone age. Stop staring at the rearview mirror and look through the windshield before you wrap yourself around a tree. If you pine for the BC era, go find yourself a freakin cave to move into.

I am totally disgusted with the human race, a cancer on this planet

I've read so many articles about how "law enforcement" has seized literally tons of Ivory and Rhino horn only to wind up grinding it into dust and or burning it as though this will be sending some kind of message to consumers of these products. This has got to be the stupidest decision ever made in the field of wildlife conservation. The people making these choices obviously never showed up when they were supposed to be learning economics in elementary school. They are ignorant of the fact that when you reduce the supply of a commodity with a constant demand that the price always goes up. The message they actually sent to the people who trade in these animal products is "hey guess what? We just made you a lot richer by increasing the value of all the ivory and Rhino horn in your possession."
They also sent the same message to the poachers. "Hey poachers, it's now way more lucrative to kill endangered species because you'll get more money for the stuff."

I am totally disgusted with the human race, a cancer on this planet

No I haven't.

I am totally disgusted with the human race, a cancer on this planet

If man was created in the image of god, then this god you believe in and worship, and get on your knees and pray to, must be as disgusting a creature we are.

RE: Tax Time

I have a good tax preparer at HR Block. She's been doing it for 20 years and she knows about stocks & bonds. Two years ago I went to Jackson Hewitt and was audited by the IRS. They said I owed $12,000. in under payment and interest for a year. I went back to Hewitt and the yound man who did my taxes was overwhelmed so he sent it to the home office. They returned it to him a week later telling him to fix his own mess. It took months and 2 CPA's to get it corrected.

RE: If you could be a farmer

This thread reminds me of this, written in 1942. World war 2 was raging when this poem was written but life goes on.

RE: If you could be a farmer

There was a guy in the area where I had my farm who had a milk cow, A Jersey I think. He was poor as dirt. Had a couple of kids running around in worn out hand me down clothes. If you brought your own plastic milk jugs he would sell you a gallon of milk right from the cow for $1.25. He would milk the cow while you stood there and watched. It was kinda sad, his little piece of land was real hilly and rocky, not much good for anything.

RE: If you could be a farmer

I had a small farm for a few years. Started out with pigs, they were a little labor intensive but very profitable. Then I switched over to Beef cows. You don't make anywhere near the money from beef cows but they pretty much take care of themselves. I wouldn't own a horse if it was offered for free. They are useless. Same reason I wouldn't want a dog. Unless you have a lot of land and all the equipment needed it would be a losing proposition to grow crops like corn or wheat etc. Farming isn't as easy as people think and you're at the mercy of mother nature.
If I ever got back into the farm life I would raise nothing but pigs and a medium flock of laying hens.

Made 2 Pumpkin pies the other day

I guess there are no bakers in here.dunno
Anyway, this AM I was pleasantly surprised at the outcome of the Pumpkin pie. I expected the crust to be very crunchy but instead it was soft and tasty. The added Cinnamon was interfering with my spice blend though. Next time I will use plain Graham crackers instead. I can finally say that my Pumpkin pie is MY creation which I was unable to say before by using store bought frozen pie crust.
I once bought a Pumpkin pie from Walmart and it was so bad I couldn't even eat it and gave it to the chickens. That is about the difference between my Pumpkin pie and anything you can buy that is mass produced.

My next goal will be to bake a Rhubarb pie. Not Strawberry/Rhubarb but straight Rhubarb. As usual I will start with a recipe from my 1920 "Settlement Cookbook" and go from there.
Stay tuned.

RE: how heavy is your head..?

The owner of a place I worked at was having one of the men reinforce the headreast in his car. He was a "proper English gentleman" (his description) and he drove a Chevy Camaro. One day I asked him why is he strengthening the headrest in his car and he told me that he was worried that if he ever got hit in the rear the stock headrest would probably break because he claimed that his brain was so big it made his head heavier than most ordinary people. Sensing his need for an attitude adjustment I pointed out that the largest brain ever recorded belonged to an idiot and walked away leaving him to ponder bit of trivia.

Made 2 Pumpkin pies the other day

I wanted graham cracker crust but didn't feel like going out to the store so I made my own out of Cinnamon Graham crackers. I put a little water on a dinner plate and laid the Graham cracker in it for about a minute. Once it got soft, I picked it up with a spatula and placed it in the pie tin. I built the whole crust like that it took about an hour to make 2 crusts and I let them dry for 2-3 days. They looked like mozaic art work. Then I made the filling using Pumpkin I prepared last Thanksgiving from real Pumpkins and had frozen. I used my own blend of spices. I put one pie in the freezer and one in the fridge. I'll try it in the morning with a hot cup of coffee.

Putin's ultimate downfall could come at the hands of the unfolding economic crisis.

Keen to be seen sharing the public's economic pain, it was announced on Friday that President Putin had cut his own salary, as well as that of Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and other high-ranking officials, by ten percent.
According to government documents released in 2014 cited by CNN, Putin's annual salary was nearly 3.7 million rubles last year -- worth about $61,000 today due to inflation. There are truck drivers in this country making more than that.
Maybe Peutin can come to the good ole US of A, Get a CDL and start driving a tractor trailer for Walmart.
