RE: What will most help prevent poverty and homelessness.

I went to a High School in a rough part of NYC, the South Bronx. The school was named after a major labor leader, Samuel Gompers. Across the front of the school were carved in stone these words spoken by the schools namesake:
HE WHO HATH A TRADE HATH AN ESTATE

These words were to be my guiding credo and I decided that this statement made so much sense that I was determined that I would learn a trade or 2 or 3 and everybody should have a trade of some kind which they could always fall back on should their ambitious dreams fail to materialize.
The problem is in many places including America, this simple motto has been all but forgotten in favor of liberal arts and other academic degrees. In my life I've had people working for me with college degrees whos job description included taking out the trash and sweeping the floor. They could recite Shakespere but they were unable to weld 2 pieces of metal together or rebuild an engine.

Just when you thought you found an answer to quiting smoking

First there was cold turkey, then there was weaning, hypnosis, the Patch, Psychology, replacement therapy, fear, workplace rules, rejection etc etc. Now science and technology steps in to save you with e-cigs and "vaping".
But wait....
All that glitters isn't gold. You may just be trading one form of Cancer causing habit for another.

I've never been more convinced that the best way to quit smoking and slowly killing yourself is to never start in the first place.

I raised 2 sons, neither of them are, or ever were, smokers. I made sure of that because besides all my other duties as a parent, my highest priority was to make sure they never succumbed to this filthy expensive habit. I did it in a very novel way. I kept them broke! I never gave them an "Allowance". I paid them for doing chores but they were so lazy that they preferred to do nothing for free, than to do anything for pay. As a result they had no money to throw away on cigarettes and if they ever did any chores to earn some money for whatever, the thought of throwing it away on cigarettes was abhorrent to them considering what they went through to get it. Plus the friends who smoked didn't like to hang around with them because they couldn't bum a butt from them because they didn't have any.

RE: Best Writers

Jack London was always one of my favs. His short stories like "To build a Fire" and "Love of Life" put you in the time and place of the main character not to mention the dire life or death situation he was in.

The 5 worst predictions for 2015

Also the 5 people who got lucky with those predictions will be considered brilliant and be quoted and their opinions will be sought after.

The 5 worst predictions for 2015

IMO all predictions are expressions of hopes and fears. They are no more than extrapolations of existing situations carried to a logical outcome. I could predict that there will be a terrorist attack somewhere in the US that will kill many people and to considerable damage but that is just betting on the laws of probability.

If 100 crazy predictions are made and 5 actually come true, those 5 will be the only ones anybody remembers.

RE: Best Writers

Have you read "Cities in Flight" Ken?
Surprised nobody mentioned Robert Heinlein yet or John Steinbeck, or Mark Twain, or Edgar Allen Poe, or Edgar Rice Borroughs.

RE: My Reply To....."" Catfoot's; 'Will The Right One Ever Show Up? "",!!!!!

I give you my word, those scammers are not from the States. More likely they are from some African country Like Ghana where they live in a dirt floor hut and hang out at an internet cafe.

RE: Erdogan's new a thousand room palace.

Well, he could buy 1,000 school girls from Boco Haram and give each one her own room. This way he can provide entertainment for visiting ISIS fighters and radicalized Algerian Frenchmen who are freely passing through his country en route to and from Syria and Yemen.

Oh no wait, he has to save 3 rooms, one for his wife, one for his sister, and one for his daughter. These could be called the "Honeymoon Suites".

Fold or Crumple?

If you crumple toilet paper before using it stop reading, this doesn't apply to you.

For folders:
professor
I have just completed a mathematical study that proves there are a certain number of squares to be avoided at all costs. These are 8 and 16. These numbers are unacceptable because they violate the "Don't fold on the perforations law". 5 is the fewest practical number of squares needed to get the job done. Anything less than 5 would be totally inadequate for the task. 6 is acceptable because the second fold places the fold on an unperforated line. 8 and 16 can't be folded without having the folds violate the law. So you can safely use 7 and 9 or 15 and 17 to be in compliance.

RE: help downhill fast

You're lucky you don't have any babies. My marriage was on the rocks and one Christmas I took a trip to Florida to see my mother because she was getting on in years. When I got home, my wife was gone and she took my 3 year old and my 9 year old boys. Their dresser was gone with all their clothes, their bunk bed was gone, all their toys were gone. She took them about 200 miles away to another state to live with her boy friend. I guess I didn't think she would really do it.
One night, riding in the car back from town, we were talking about them moving away and my 3 YO turned to me and said "But I don't want to miss you." It tore my heart out! I'm crying right now just hearing him utter those words in my mind.

Daniel, don't think about the good times, don't think about the things you love about her, think instead of everything you didn't like about her and think about the bad times. It will make it a lot easier to live without her. Meet new people esp women, get out of the house, start a new hobby.

RE: Favourite American Comedy

To me the best comedy show on American TV right now is Big Bang Theory. Before that I was really into the Simpsons. Before that it was Married with Children and going further back it was All in the Family.
I never cared for 2.5 men and I love Lucy was mostly slapstick IMO.
Jack Benny, Milton Berle, and Rodney Dangerfield, are probably the 3 funniest men to ever appear on TV. Who else besides Jack Benny can crack up an audience just by looking at the camera. When Milton Berle comes out on stage in drag he brings the house down.

Yosemite free-climbers reach top of El Capitan

It took 19 days of climbing. I heard at least one of the men had to wait for his bloody hands to heal before he could go on.
What do you do if after a few days on the cliff face you realise you can't make it? Call a cab?

RE: What is your favorite British comedy?

I always thought "Are You Being Served" was entertaining. I also liked "The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin". Then there were the great "Carry on" movies.

RE: New york city....

Fly into Washington DC, I'll pick you up and we'll drive up to NYC. I'll give you a tour of New York no tourist ever sees, having been born & raised there. This will have to wait til springtime though cause I'm not interested in freezing my bunns off.

The next President of the US will be a Democrat

I guess my humorous post went sailing over everybodies head. Just goes to show people who claim to have a good sense of humor really don't. dunno

The next President of the US will be a Democrat

I'm trying to talk about the Keystone XL Pipeline and these people keep hijacking the thread talking about the next president.confused

The next President of the US will be a Democrat

I gleaned this from the US Steel stock message board. It seems many investers think the XL will be a boon to steel companies because they will get to sell a lot of pipe. I think this guy puts the whole thing in perspective.

"Keystone XL Pipeline Profit Motive and Steel Impact

Keystone requires line pipe made by only a few domestic steel mills and the pipe has already been bought and paid for so no benefit. Unless you are the 50% domestic or 50% Canadian, Italian or Indian companies you are out of luck. There are other steel products; storage, piling, structural and other materials that will be purchased from the domestic and/or foreign manufacturers that have not shuttered plants or exited those products for short term financial reasons. The major purpose for the pipeline is NOT to benefit American steel mills. The primary purpose is to lower the transportation costs AND ship the refining to the US gulf coast for ultimate shipment of refined products to Europe (diesel mainly) and Asia (read China) for higher end prices than offered by the US market due to our blessing of abundant natural resources. PROFIT is the main purpose for the Keystone XL and the US Congress has augured its way into the equation and is being lobbied, at great expense, to facilitate the profit motive of the Canadian producers, the Canadian and US pipeline companies, the refiners and the Big Oil lobby that will use the refinery overload to justify the coming price increases to meet "world pricing pressures" that they help create. And the train robbery of the American people continues without intervention by our bought and paid for leaders."

The next President of the US will be a Democrat

I lived in Columbus OH for a couple of years and the exhaust pipe on our oil burner was not connected properly, and a lot of the smoke was leaking into the basement. We called a repairman to fix it and he said "I don't know how you all could stand living in this house." We said we're from New Jersey, to us this is fresh air."

The next President of the US will be a Democrat

This is copied directly from West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin's website:
"Nov 18 2014
Manchin Statement on Keystone XL Pipeline Vote
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) today issued the following statement on the Senate failing to approve the Keystone XL pipeline by a vote of 59-41.

“I am deeply disappointed that the Senate failed to pass the Keystone XL pipeline,” Senator Manchin said. “We have everything to gain by building this pipeline, especially since it would help create thousands of jobs right here at home. Keystone XL is expected to create 20,000 direct jobs during construction and 118,000 indirect and spinoff jobs. With well over 1,000 American businesses already supplying goods and services to pipeline companies, the ripple effects of these projects would continue to boost economic prosperity and create more employment opportunities in other industries. Every state - including West Virginia Huh? confused Last time I looked at a map WVA is not on the way from Alberta to the Gulf of Mexico. - would benefit economically from this activity.

It's true the XL will create a lot of construction jobs building the pipeline but once the pipline is completed all those jobs will end. Experts say it will take only 50 people to run the pipeline after completion.
“Contrary to assertions, Keystone is not an export pipeline. The State Department’s Environmental Impact Statement has even stated that it would not be cost-effective to export the pipeline’s oil, stating that 'export is unlikely to be economically justified for any significant' time.
This is also true but nobody has proposed exporting tar sand oil, rather refiners plan to crack this oil into it's components, distilate, gasoline, asphalt, tar etc and export those products as a value added commodity. Furthermore the profits from refining will not be seen by the American people unless you're talking about the multimillionaires that make up the executive boards of big refiners like Valero etc. The revenue from the sale of the oil will flow directly back to drillers in Canada.

“Building the Keystone XL pipeline would not only create jobs, but it would limit our dependence on foreign oil.

Excuse me but just when did Canada become a part of America? Tar sand oil IS foreign oil DUH!

Energy security is often discussed, but the benefits of Keystone are much more than simple generalizations. The global supply of energy relies on oil producers in deeply unstable regions, and the Keystone pipeline would help stabilize global supply while also benefiting Americans and our allies.”

One thing he doesn't mention as it pertains to jobs is the number of superfund jobs that will be created when this pipeline ruptures and spews this nasty oil all over the ground.

The next President of the US will be a Democrat

Jeb Bush wont even win Florida if he decides to run. The Bush name is toxic.

Proof #1
If Hillary runs and there's every indication she will, Women will cross party lines to get the first woman President in the White House.

Proof #2
With Republicans controlling 2 out of 3 brances of government, to elect a Republican for President would mean that no checks & balances will exist. America will have a government absolutely controlled by only 1 party. I believe that even a loyal party member wouldn't want that and many Republicans would hold their nose and actually vote for the opposing party candidate. It will come down to a choice between voting against your party or voting against your country. We fought a war in the 18th century for a representative government and I like to think it still means something today.

The next President of the US will be a Democrat

Gee, I did it again.doh I meant to say you can use ooby_dooby part 2

The next President of the US will be a Democrat

RE: Positions

I invented a position that is so good I'm thinking of getting a patent on it. It can't be described in words though, only by demonstration.wink

The next President of the US will be a Democrat

Hit the wrong button.
Harry Truman was a great pres, he didn't take crap from anybody.

The next President of the US will be a Democrat

RE: Stood up

I had a date one night and we stood each other up. We got our signals crossed and we were waiting at 2 different locations.

The next President of the US will be a Democrat

With gaining a majority in the Senate during the midterm elections the Republican party has torpedoed any hope they may have had of winning the White House!

I'll let that statement sink in a while and see if you can figure out the logic behind such a prediction.

RE: POST IF YOU ARE REAL!!!! ------- Role call for CS

it's interesting to look at all these names of people who are gone and some of them will never be back. In one case most of you will know who I'm talking about it's like he's talking to us from the grave. I'm fairly certain he's not the only one either. It's odd that I recognize the names and certain other things about these people but it's hard to put a face with the name in most cases.
