RE: women keeping husbannds name after divorce

My ex wife kept my name for the sake of our daughter, however, she recently had a baby boy, and I find he also has my family name, not sure I am happy about that, I understand the logistics, but he is not my son and nothing to do with my family other than being my daughters half brother. I asked her to use his fathers name, but it seems she didn't want to do that..........

RE: Linux anyone?

Such condescension, I assume you practice every day!!!

No, I didn't teach children, I taught qualified Computer Engineers, but sometimes I came across twats who thought they knew it all, I just ignored them and they soon fell by the wayside. As the saying goes " a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing".

A piece of genuine advice, if you speak and act nicely, those around you will mostly do the same, if you act like a jerk, you will soon be left alone.beer

RE: What's for dinner?

Thats the problem here, we just cannot get western ingredients, and local stuff is often slightly different, garlic here is sweet and mild, cucumber taste like courgettes, spinach has tiny leaves and less flavour, I make my own bread as Chinese bread is awful, they use loads of sugar and too much water, plus always coat it in sesame seeds, and in this region we can only buy one type of potato, which is tasteless and can only really be added to stir fries. I always bring loads of stuff back from the UK when I visit lol

RE: Linux anyone?

Absolutely, and MS would also agree, I remember working at their offices in Bracknell UK some few years back on a joint project, and finding that their in-house servers were running an early version of Linux, if you look deeply enough into Apples OS you will see it is really just another version of Unix, which could almost be Linux bar the name lol

RE: What's for dinner?

I had spicy pork, with stir fried mixed veg on a bed of white rice, now I'm very used to the hot hot spicy food this region is famous for, in fact, when I go back to the UK I am starting to find western food a tad blandmumbling But then I make up with all the wonderful deserts which I can never get in China laugh

Having said that, I really have a huge passion for traditional British pork sausages, real mash and real onion gravy, roll on the Chinese New Year so I can get back to the UK rolling on the floor laughing

RE: Linux anyone?

I was giving a true and balanced reply, just because it opposes your opinion does not warrant your condescension!!

Before becoming an English teacher I taught Computer Science, I trained engineers all over the world for an international IT company, my knowledge of UNIX/LINUX/MacOS is fairly extensive, don't make presumptions!!!

I stand by what I have clearly stated, Installing Linux is not always straightforward, and until the powers that be design a foolproof way to install on any configuration of PC, it will remain a system for those who want to delve into programming!!

RE: THE BIG MANLY HORSEPOWER THREAD

You may have done better to use a picture thread, as you cannot post pics in this one!!

RE: Linux anyone?

I think you're missing my point, people who use a computer want it to work from day one, they don't want to have to learn how to program, it the same as buying a car, you would not buy a car, which on delivery, you discover you need to fit a fuel pump, and maybe air con, anybody can drive, but it takes a mechanic to install such items, so car manufactures ensure, everything works as it should when you pick it up. This rarely happens in the computer world!!!

And your link, well lets look at a quote from it:-
"
Getting Boot-Repair
1st option : get a CD including Boot-Repair
The easiest way to use Boot-Repair is to burn one of the following disks and boot on it.

Boot-Repair-Disk is a CD starting Boot-Repair automatically.

Boot-Repair is also included in Linux-Secure-Remix.

Remark : you can also install the ISO on a live-USB (eg via UnetBootin or LiliUSB or Universal USB Installer).

2nd option : install Boot-Repair in Ubuntu
- boot your computer on a Ubuntu live-CD or live-USB.

- choose "Try Ubuntu"

- connect internet

- open a new Terminal, then type:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair && sudo apt-get update
- Press Enter.

- Then type:

sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair && (boot-repair &)
- Press Enter
"
You really think the average computer user wants to do all this just so they can use Linux? Sorry, as I said, until they come up with a fail safe delivery system, linux will remain an OS only for those who actually know how to program, rather than just use a computer.

RE: Linux anyone?

Again you're not giving the complete story, dual booting on a new(ish) computer or laptop is not as straightforward as you are professing, Grub does not work with a system using EFI, which almost all modern systems now use, in some you have the option to turn it off in bios, but that assumes the user understands bios etc, your average punter wants to load an OS and use it, not make software changes that he/she doesn't understand, and lets face it, going to the linux forums is about as useful as a chocolate tea cup, the posters all assume everyone can work in unix/linux languages, they often look down on beginners, and, rarely if ever, actually explain what the changes do and why.

Linux is a clean, stable and very good OS, but it is not for those with limited computer skills or programming knowledge. Until the boffins design an installer/grub that seamlessly installs Linux distros on any hardware (PC based), it will still be just for those that can and do understand unix/linux, or have some basic programming skills.

It never fails to amaze me how some people will accept workarounds rather than an actual working system,if cars were made in the same way as computers we would all still be using bicycles!!!

RE: Linux anyone?

Actually that's not quite true, it depends on your hardware system and bios, installing is either very easy or a real pain in the neck!!
Having said that,Mint is the one I would recommend for beginners.

RE: Britain, stop being selfish and speak German like everybody else!!

It was always my understanding that todays English was based on Old German anyway, so Merkel maybe needs to brush up on her history, or maybe modern German should really have followed the British English path? That makes far more sense to me peace

Typhoon Haiyan hits central Philippines, unknown number of lost lives

What I find appalling is that the largest, richest and most powerful country in Asia, namely China, has not lifted a finger to help these unfortunate people.

Hong Kong has donated money and equipment, Taiwan has donated money and emergency equipment, but mainland China has donated a measly amount of money, this to a country that helped in China's hour of need when it was hit by a huge earthquake.

The Chinese government should put aside political arguments and show their ability to be benevolent and correct.

Confucius must be spinning in his grave at the way the Chinese leaders are totally disregarding his philosophy and teachings.

Thankfully, the Chinese people don't share their governments ideology, this will do China no good, and will push the CCP to even fewer members.

Watch this space!!!

Typhoon Haiyan hits central Philippines, unknown number of lost lives

And now another storm is on its way, as if these poor people didn't have enough problems already.

When you read about this terrible disaster, it makes you start to see life in fuller perspective, and one realises that our everyday problems are really quite meaningless in the real world.

If there really is a God, now would be a good time to show some compassion!!!!!!!!

Typhoon Haiyan hits central Philippines, unknown number of lost lives

The news is very very sad, most of my friends in Cebu seem ok, ex pats in brick built homes, but the devastation of one shanty area on the sea front is just terrible, hundreds if not thousands homeless.

Maybe it's a blessing in disguise? Mt Filipina friend told me this afternoon, the area on Bohol that is now completely gone, will have to be rebuilt, the government wanted to do this 3 years ago, but never had the money. Now they will be forced to find some, maybe the ruling catholic church will help for once instead of just taking money.

Typhoon Haiyan hits central Philippines, unknown number of lost lives

So sad for these gentle and friendly people, to be struck by what many are saying is the most powerful typhoon to strike land, the Philippines is one of the poorest countries in the world, they will need the help from everyone if they are to recover from this disaster.

I have many friends in and around Cebu, but as of 8pm last night have not heard anything, so if anyone has any news I would be extremely grateful.

RE: McDonalds will never be the same again

I know it very "PC" to castigate McDonalds and the rest of the "fast food" outlets, but shouldn't you get the true fact first?

This from the McDonalds website:-
"Thanks for your question. McDonald's UK French Fries are cooked in the restaurants using a non-hydrogenated vegetable oil. Some of this oil will be absorbed by the potato on cooking. The cooked Fries will therefore end up being approximately 86% potato - the remaining 14% being vegetable oil."

Or maybe you think McDs are willing to lie and be open to huge lawsuits for doing so???

Any food eaten in excessive quantities is bad for you, the odd Burger and fries is hardly life threatening, and actually can be a blessing when you are hungry and in a hurry.

Peking Duck, just so delicious

RE: No More Incandecent Bulbs

No its the design, they need to warm up, some take longer than others, and none give the same quality of light as the original type.

RE: No More Incandecent Bulbs

Already that way here in China, and I hate it, the new leds are too harsh and the low wattage energy saving ones take forever to warm up and then give a light that is also to harsh. Florescent tubes are mainly used here which I think give off a horrible light, and always flickering, cannot be good for you.

RE: Has anyone actually ordered wine internationally?

have a read about this also

Now England produce some of the best wine available, White is crisp and clean tasting and red very dry and full of good flavours.

RE: do extraterrestrials exist ¿

If someone could prove god was an alien then that would make a hell of a lot more sense to me. grin

We are but a speck of dust in relation to the cosmos, to assume, humans, are the only intelligent life form in such a universe is incredibly shortsighted and narrow minded IMO.

RE: Are we being watched and followed?

Maybe searching for englishmen abroad wearing long white socks grin cheers

RE: English is second language in England

Your title is very misleading, and done to stir up comments.

Lets balance things out a little shall we, there are, according to the school characteristics statistical first release (SFR) (using January 2013 school census)24,328 schools in England.

Thats over 24,000 schools Tom, and in your first paragraph you talk about 240, thats 240 out of 24,000 or 1%, and lets remember these schools are predominantly in areas of high immigration from India, Pakistan etc.

So, NO English is not becoming a second language in England, but it is actually being taught in schools so that the students can and will communicate in English, better still, when they have children their first language will most likely also be English.

RE: Is torture ever acceptable?

It's a difficult question to answer, as it depends on the information being withheld, a terrorist? No. A criminal? No, but if someone has kidnapped your 5 year old child, I doubt if any parent would refuse to allow torture to obtain the details of where their child is hidden.

If fact I would go as far to say, I would happily torture anyone who took my daughter. Yet I am by nature, a pacifist and abore violence and war, however, circumstances can always change a persons opinion!

RE: Is the cosmos telling us the end is near?

Rubbish, it doesn't coincide with the bible, the bible just uses a natural phenomenon to try and make people believe it is predicting the future.

Therefore passover etc are held on days when a natural but unusual occurrence takes place.

Captain Cook uses a similar natural idea when he frightened unintelligent natives away by predicting an eclipse of the sun, by saying he would turn off the sun unless released!!

All in all it has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with weather conditions.

RE: usa

So as you can maybe read I didn't use "you" I used "your" and children is plural not singular as in child. A reference to the childish behaviour of both parties.

I still don't follow your argument, as unless something incredible has happened in the USA, I was under the impression that politicians were also mortal citizens, but happy to stand corrected if you can show they are another species.

My original post, which you seem to want to answer even though not addressed to you, was pointing out that the people put the politicians in power, therefore they should be the ones controlling them, the citizens should be standing up and screaming at the republicans to put their country first not line their own pockets.

If they don't like the way the government is working on behalf of the country, as a democratic country they can vote them out, it's a simple procedure, a vote of no confidence in the house would force an election, but seeing as the Democratic party had the majority vote and not the republicans, it is about time they (reps)accepted they lost and actually backed the government to find a solution to this woeful economic disaster.

RE: usa

Guess my meaning got lost in the translation, "your Country" "Children" indicate the text is referring to a community not an individual.

RE: Bfore WW2...Which Country Was To Believe Had The Most Powerful Military Forces In Europe

He may have been you hero, but he was incredibly arrogant and his treatment of the allies especially the British, was appalling, remember this was the man who ran away to England from France when Germany attacked, he organised his armies from England yet refused to take part in the D-day landings.

A clever man and a wonderful leader, but he was not a nice man nor a grateful one.

From Wiki "When, in May 1945 the German armies surrendered to the Americans and British at Rheims, a separate armistice was signed with France in Berlin. De Gaulle refused to allow any British participation in the victory parade in Paris. However, among the vehicles that took part was an ambulance from the Hadfield-Spears Ambulance Unit, staffed by French doctors and British nurses. One of the nurses was Mary Spears, who had set up the unit and had worked almost continuously since the Battle of France with Free French forces in the Middle East, North Africa and Italy. Mary’s husband was General Edward Spears, the British liaison to the Free French who had personally spirited de Gaulle to safety in Britain in 1940. When de Gaulle saw the Union flags and Tricolours side by side on the ambulance, and heard French soldiers cheering, "Voilà Spears! Vive Spears!" he ordered that the unit be closed down immediately and its British staff sent home. A number of French troops returned their medals in protest and Mary wrote, "it is a pitiful business when a great man suddenly becomes small."

RE: usa

Not sure quite what you mean, I was stating that Americans who are holding the country for ransom should get off their perches and actually support their country not their own pockets

RE: usa

You still don't get it do you, Your country is in Debt, it owes not millions, not billions but trillions of dollars, YOUR country is the freeloader, you borrow and borrow and borrow, with no thought about how to repay these debts, and worse, by the stupidity of your governmentS with an S, and your banking system, the rest of the world will also suffer.

Stop acting like spoilt children, face up to the problems like true Americans and deal with it instead of holding innocent Americans as hostages, the Republicans are no better than the terrorists you are all so scared of.

You Don't need the largest Army, Navy and Airforce in the world to protect yourselves, especially as every other American has an arsenal in his basement.
