Actually English language uses very few Greek words, however we did modify many to create our own language, making it logical and far easier to learn and be understood, hence why English is the recognised international language and NOT greek.
Which is why I said MOST PEOPLE, however if you wish to be pedantic that's fine, I was trying to be helpful, but as you're from America I guess it fell on stony ground. America := definition from Oxford Dictionaries. A land mass of the western hemisphere consisting of the continents of North and South America joined by the Isthmus of Panama.
The word Asia is , I think, misleading, as it seems to cover a very large area, however, traditionally the following are considered Middle East rather than Asian. For example someone from Thailand, Lao, China, Korea, Japan would be oriental in origin, I think someone from Iran would not think of themselves as Oriental but rather Arabian. They would consider their food Arabian not oriental cuisine. Bahrain Cyprus Egypt Iran Iraq Israel Jordan Kuwait Lebanon Northern Cyprus Oman Palestine Qatar Saudi Arabia Syria Turkey United Arab Emirates Yemen Most people when talking about Asia and Asian food in particular, would be referring to an area from India, then east to China and Korea.
RoseaBellBlues You maybe don't realise, but only one of your poll questions can be ticked by a user, which kind of makes the whole purpose meaningless.
Why is a chicken pointless? I often buy a chicken, roast it and then I have almost a week of various chicken based dishes, I make my students laugh with my home baked bread and chicken sandwiches, but amazing how fast they learn to appreciate a good old fashioned Chicken salad sandwich.
It's usually safer if they are in an aeroplane, as although throwing a baby can be fun, the landing is problematical, and so catching is the preferred method but prone to mishaps.
Of course if the child is Peter Pan the problem is solved
He did this because English is not his first language, it is very very common for second language users to use English this way, it shows that he was referring to the female neighbour and not the male, by stating "Neighbours wife" He has clearly defined the subject within the sentence.
They range from 8 to adult, depending on where I am teaching, I teach primary children at a private school and graduates in a university. I also teach adults privately but I will have to shoot you if you repeat that
Um not really so smart methinks, India and Indonesia are not close to being neighbours, that's like saying USofA is a neighbour of Chile. Where is the similarity between Asian and African? Other than dark hair and brownish eyes, the one is oriental the other African, having lived in both areas I can assure you there is very little similarity.
The Chinese seem to have lost the art of romance, even my students say this, when we discuss love/marriage, they have the opinion that romance and love is only at the beginning of the relationship, as soon as they marry, love become responsibility, that true love just fades away to become friendship and being responsible for a family life. Sad IMO
In China using public transport can be terrifying for the unwary, boarding trains is a mad rush, people even climb in via windows, having a seat ticket is no guarantee of being able to sit!! But once seated, the passengers return from Neanderthals to normal humans and will share their food, drinks and conversation with any and every one.
Buses are usually very crowded, incredibly noisy and not exactly clean, drivers chat with passengers or use their mobile phone, drink tea all while negotiating the rule-less road system. Passengers often use their phones too, shouting at the top of their voices to be heard above the din. Live animals accompany some passengers, I have yet to discover why a dog can travel free but a chicken needs a ticket. It makes for an interesting journey
Well his comment doesn't make me uncomfortable or even come close to hitting a nerve, I just sometimes question why we need to quote from certain people from the past, it makes the assumption they knew better than those around us today. In 50 years maybe people will be quoting Katie Price with just the same conviction in her ideology.
I am not sure his ideology plays such an important role in 2014, although accept some of his philosophy has created useful debates which possibly lead to a better understanding.
RE: Name a Greek word in English, used in your own language.Part 2
