RE: Hate speech - an internet phenomenon.

Maybe that would be called jumping to a conclusion already formulated in a previous mind choice and simply watching for someone to fill the pattern, so dismissing the argument?

So what is 'consideration'? Other than scanning for what fits or doesn't fit in each individuals tool box of preconceived notions. Isn't that what we do in life? Read a book or see a movie, react to our situations growing up, watch interactions among fellow workers, family, neighbors.. even learn how one family can be completely different from another.... to become ourselves is the constant process of accepting and rejecting bits of information about what we think fits for us.

Are those bits and pieces of choices... Truth, or what we 'perceive' as truths for our individual selves? What about societal input, what if we live in an area which already has a set cultural stance on 'the Truth'? So if you come from a different tribe... then you could have logically or illogically a different group of deductions about what is factual or perceived truth.

That's why when diplomats are posted to a different country they are given a list of appropriate and inappropriate behaviors for THAT particular country... so they don't screw up. Where to put your chopsticks, how to wear a burka, whether a nod means yes or no, what side of the road to drive on? But it gets even more dicey when we have to navigate through human minds that have different cultural cues than we do. Is their Truth less than our Truth? They believe it's true for them just as we believe ours are for us, don't they?

So those would be Conceptual truths... but there are also proven Factual truths. For example they've discovered that ALL humans have the same facial expressions and reactions to stimuli; smile, cry, laughter, anger from Eskimos to Kenyans... even evident in monkeys and I know I've had a few dogs and maybe a horse who smiled and had a sense of humor too wink.

So what then? Doesn't that prove that our concepts of what we consider our truth, is in fact pretty nebulous stuff and simply our interpretation of what is true based on a little box of personal guesses and cultural clues?

But it does seem the hardest thing for humans to do, is step out of that comfortable box.

All in the eye of the beholder isn't it?

RE: Bahrain protesters funerals.

I don't find you particularly negative... more a pragmatist.

Your opening comment left you open for debate on your tone, but I just found it a typical western response to an eastern culture altho a bit insensitive to the Muslims... which you learn to tune into the more you are here, as we have quite a few who visit the forums.

We ARE living in difficult times.. unemployment, no jobs for our kids, inflation, recession, war, political unrest, divisions within countries... I know my money certainly isn't going as far as it used to. As far as I'm concerned... there's absolutely nothing wrong with being a realist.

We can't all be dancing around pretending none of this is going on. Vent and get it off your chest and then you'll have more room for being amused at the irony when you're done.... really. wink

cool handshake cheers

RE: Bahrain protesters funerals.

Yeah well an occasional foray into a different culture is a bit different than a steady diet, wouldn't you say? confused

RE: Bahrain protesters funerals.

Actually there were women participating in the rebellions in Egypt and Bahrain.

RE: Bahrain protesters funerals.

They have to start somewhere. Get them all a bit more freedom of choice instead of blind obedience and maybe down the road they'll realize they may have underestimated the other half of their population. dunno

RE: Hate speech - an internet phenomenon.

This is required because they want proof to back up the opinion... . otherwise it's just opinion. But never mind.. even if you offer it in the spirit of debate, it's never good enough for those who would rather die than consider anyone elses point of view might have merit. dunno

You have to acknowledge in the end... that real open discussion does not exist, it's simply defending ones position.

RE: Zionist Occupied America

You have to catch one at the beginning or it gets too involved to be catch-up-able kiddo... . Because they keep bringing up points and complaints from page 15 all the way to page 49... at 50 they shut them down... and they'll start a new one on the same subject with a different name dunno. So you could be behind 150 pages and never understand innuendos of what they're on about.wine

RE: Hate speech - an internet phenomenon.

My 70 yr old Italian cousin got her first pc last year because she wanted to keep in touch with the grandkids and play this card game she adores called Buraco.... so one of the kids found an online group... and she was in.

OMGosh she was horrified... how people went on about the stupid moves this one or that one made, and she said she told them to be more polite.. and they just flamed her... laugh

But now she says the only thing they understand is tit for tat... and she's been giving as good as she got and feeling quite proud of herself! professor rolling on the floor laughing

RE: Zionist Occupied America

It's the secret lingo of the overly involved... what, so you don't want to take a crash course on Israeli affairs? Sometimes it's just best to step away from the thread.. I do. laugh hug cool

Middle East Revolt: Youth, Technology Are Driving Change

I agree with that Pat.... everyone has to find their own way. thumbs up

The Muslim religions have been around since the 600s and basically haven't changed since then... they have a long road ahead to let their youth grow with the changing times... it will be very hard.
