Short and Sweet...

I had a comment on my last blog that it was too wordy. Okay, I can do requests. I did a YouTube search tonight and found a video titled Short and Sweet. The amazing thing is, one of my favorite guitarists David Gilmore performs the song.

McCain the Maverick is no more...

Senator John McCain passed away today at the age of 81.
1936 - 2018 may he rest in peace...
Some people liked him and some didn't.
It doesn't matter as he's gone now.

Giving up the ghost...

I worked with a guy a few years ago who shaved his head every other day. He was in his mid 60's started shaving a few years earlier when he no longer had enough hair to support the sewn-in 'hair club for men' toupee. I didn't know him then and he showed me a photo with a full head of dark brown hair that looked like he just got up from a stylist's chair.

Those hair replacement treatments must be expensive as I don't see too many guys doing that anymore. Hair replacement commercials appeared everywhere... TV, magazines, and billboards and not so many recently. Besides, shaved heads have become quite fashionable.

On the advice of a girlfriend he was asked to give up the ghost and remove the toupee.
The funny part of the whole thing was his POF profile photos had him with a full head of (fake) hair. He did a lot of power dating and when they saw a much older man with no hair he rarely got a second date. Oh, a small detail... he lied about his age on his profile then wrote a 'made a mistake when creating the profile' correction near the bottom of his introduction.

My comment was 'stop trying to deceive these women' and post your real information up front. He knew his odds would be far less with real information and he truly believed once they 'got to know him' his looks and age wouldn't matter.

Alexa... The Echo Dot

Probably the hottest gift for under $40 is the Echo Dot voice-controlled speaker sold through Amazon. It runs the Alexa Artificial Intelligence system and can be used to play music, control smart appliances, answer questions, set timers and more...

The Echo Dot is their entry level device and the Echo and Echo Plus are available and have bigger speakers with better audio.

Echo, waits for your voice command to carry out your instructions. It's silent until he hears the 'wake word' and the standard wake word is ALEXA. Because of this, most people call the device by the wake word ALEXA and not by it's real name Echo. You have a choice of 4 different wake words which is important if someone near the device is named Alexa or you have 2 devices in close proximity then both will respond. I've set mine to wake with the word 'Echo'
It's not perfect as it often it starts talking thinking I called it by name. I reply with "Echo, I wasn't talking to you" and it apologizes and goes back to sleep.

I received one for Christmas and downloaded the app that connects it to a Wi-Fi signal. It's designed to operate by voice command, but you can also control it through your cellphone.

Echo is great for pulling up facts and figures. I didn't have a calculator handy and asked it to run some numbers... yeah, that worked for me.

Sometimes, I'll stump Echo asking a question the device cannot find an answer. I've read it collects hundreds of thousands of questions and adds them to the learning process, similar to the BORG in the Star Trek movies. The logic comes from a central system that gets smarter with time.

I asked "Echo, what's heavier, a ton of bricks or a ton of feathers" and the response was they weigh the same but the feathers required a considerably larger volume. Satisfied with the response, I asked "Echo, explain trickle-down economics"

Wipe that mole off your face...

Sometimes it's not so easy considering the same word has different meanings.

If a guy has a birth defect (as in a dark round often raised mark on his skin) it's called a mole. The same defect on a woman is called a beauty mark.
Gotta love those dual standards. laugh
You cannot wipe those moles off your face and need to see a dermatologist for professional treatment.

Another mole is a rodent sized mammal with sharp paws that burrows underground. They leave a small opening with dirt around it when they come to the surface...
Don't consider touching any of those moles... you could get scratched in the process.

A third mole is the traditional Mexican sauce that often contains fruit, chili pepper, nuts, black pepper, onion, cinnamon, cumin and chocolate.

So get some mole sauce and pour it over your tacos, burritos or enchiladas.

When you're done, you can wipe this mole off your face!

Michael Cohen is seeking your donations...

Among the news stories this morning, Michael Cohen, former attorney for Donald Trump is seeking your donations to pay for his legal fees. His GoFundMe page has a goal of $500,000 to help pay for he legal defense and has already received $50,000 from an anonymous donor.
It looks like 'the fixer' needs a fix laugh

The story I read stated "Michael Cohen Truth Fund" had raised more than $145,000 from about 2,600 donations.

Already spoofed, the real web address for the fundraising page, michaelcohentruthfund.com has a shorter version, michaelcohentruth.com, that redirects to Trump's re-election campaign website.

This could be an interesting month...

Soaking up free Wi-Fi at the coffee shop...

It's standard business to offer free Wi-Fi nowadays. Donuts shops, restaurants, fast-food establishments. The lobby of the medical clinic has a sign on the wall with the login code to access their free Wi-Fi.

Twenty years ago the place to get online was at an Internet Cafe. I used to video chat with some women in the Philippines who paid by the hour to share time with friends family and the possibility of meeting a guy online. Owning a computer and having an internet at home was only for the wealthy. The cafe was the normal way get a computer and connect with the outside world.

Often, it's dark when I leave my office heading home and pass by a 24 hour McDonalds. I can see groups of people on the outside patio relaxing at tables typing away on their laptops soaking up the free Wi-Fi.

Watching out for motorcycles...

There is a lot of public awareness about watching out for motorcycles and sharing the road with motorcyclists. Bumper stickers, billboards and highway warning signage mark the roadways I travel on. While I don't want to see someone get killed or injured in a motorcycle accident. The odds are... when a motorcycle tangles with a car, the car wins!

The carpool lane is the inside lane with a double line separation to the regular lanes. That separation is roughly 2 feet wide and NOT to be used by motorcycles as a private lane. Well, that's with Department of Transportation says and everyday it gets used as if it's their private lane. Catching an accident for rolling between cars that are bumper-to-bumper is risky, but not life threatening.

I've taken a few road safety courses over the years and they recommend you look in the rear-view mirror at least once every 10 seconds. The speed limit is 65 and you're going 80, cars are flying past from both sides... I reverse that training and look toward the front every 10 seconds.

Tonight was no different. Traffic was moderate and moving fast. Drivers acting like it's a full moon and they need to get home before the hair and fangs appear.

I looked in the mirror to see nothing. A split second later there's someone on a 'crotch rocket' coming up from behind, so fast he has to weave in and out of traffic to avoid colliding with the flow of cars. All you need is one car who cannot gauge a motorcycle traveling in excess of 120 miles per hour to make a fast lane change and that accident will block traffic for 10 miles.

Watching out for motorcycles... who aren't watching out for you.

Fried Ginger...

Most of my meals are cooked with thin slices of ginger. I'm okay with powdered ginger, but my wife insists on cooking with fresh ginger and that's much healthier.

Pan fried meats cooked with a minimum of olive oil make the ginger take on a terrific flavor... especially when cooked with salmon.

I cannot say if it's from an age-old traditional Chinese recipe, but I do look forward to fried ginger at dinner!

Note, that's fried ginger, not to be confused with Fred and Ginger...

Cohen pleads guilty...

News stories are popping up all over regarding Trump's long-time attorney Michael Cohen's plea of guilty yesterday in campaign finance violations and other charges.

From Anderson Cooper's CNN show:
Quote from Jeffrey Toobin "This is the first time since Watergate and perhaps even before Watergate that a federal guilty plea has taken place and the guilty person said 'I committed this crime with and for the president of the United States' if this were any other person given the evidence that was presented in court today, it seems to me a virtual certainty that Donald Trump would have been indited and charged too..."

Private Jet...

I heard an advertisement on the radio last week that said the newest way to get around delays and TSA inspections is to join their flight club and charter your own private jet.

South Florida has many private airports, some within 20 miles of each other.

I thought private jets were only for Rock Stars and ultra wealthy businessmen. Obviously, times have changed. Pull up at the gate of an airport, show some ID for clearance, drive to the plane and unload from the trunk of your vehicle directly to airplane waiting to whisk you to your destination.

Just like you see in the movies... no waiting. Just go. On your arrival, no waiting. Just get in your taxi that's waiting and off you go.
