Breakthrough in nuclear fusion

Researchers have reportedly made a breakthrough in the quest to unlock a “near-limitless, safe, clean” source of energy: they have got more energy out of a nuclear fusion reaction than they put in.

Nuclear fusion involves smashing together light elements such as hydrogen to form heavier elements, releasing a huge burst of energy in the process. The approach, which gives rise to the heat and light of the sun and other stars, has been hailed as having huge potential as a sustainable, low-carbon energy source.

However, since nuclear fusion research began in the 1950s, researchers have been unable to a demonstrate a positive energy gain, a condition known as ignition.

Now, it seems, the Rubicon has been crossed.

“It proves that the long sought-after goal, the ‘holy grail’ of fusion, can indeed be achieved.”

But experts have stressed that while the results would be an important proof of principle, the technology is a long way from being a mainstay of the energy landscape. To start with, 0.4MJ is about 0.1kWh – about enough energy to boil a kettle.

The latest results, if true, top the last big breakthrough by the facility which came just last year when it was announced that the team had hit 70% of the laser energy put in to the experiment released as nuclear energy.

Wouldn't this be nice, the globe could actually live in peace after perfecting this,,, or not???dunno

It will be an interesting topic to keep an eye on Luke, but i think they need to clean up the old nuke reactors first and bring safety back into their game..
The latest results, if true..../quote]

The results are true. But, they've proven the theory a long time ago. Scaling it up has been exceedingly difficult.....
This will be ruled down by the socalled environmantalists who wanna
heat the world with wind and solar, even if we grow by 70million per year...
Hi LukeOn, wave

If you really wish to keep up with the latest in fusion technology, go to:

This is also where the upscaling is taking place right now. I have been following this venture since it started.

First off you need to understand what is and is not used in nuclear fusion. There is no uranium used, therefore there are no fuel rods that need to be stored.

Nuclear fusion as opposed to fission uses two isotypes of the hydrogen molecule taken from any source of water, fresh or sea. Those isotypes are Tritium and Deuterium, they are then heated by squeezing with magnets in a vacuum chamber and ignited to form a plasma. The heat from this plasma is then used to create steam to run a turbine. The byproduct/exhaust from this fusion process creates water vapour and helium.

Multiple computer-controlled magnets keep the plasma suspended in the centre of the chamber If at any time the hot plasma touches the sides of the vacuum containment vessel, the system automatically shuts down due to plasma cooling. There can never be a runaway event as what happens in a fission reactor when the rods are exposed.

Basically, Fusion is the same process that happens in the sun.

Cool, I'm all for it as I'm all for fission. It's clean nowmather how you twist it.
And way better than most other sources perhaps with the exception of hydra.
So let's keep those two, or now three.

But that is not my question to you. My question is political:
will the world leaders in the west really embrace this when it means giving up their new religion?
You know, the "save the planet with solar panels and wind turbines" that can't be recycled types.
@ Grand ~ wave

First off you may want to change fission to fusion in your first line, Mate.. laugh

Secondly, wind, sun and wave power are only seen as 'band aid' implementations until fusion comes on-line by most governments.

I first got involved back in the early 1990's when the government was selling off its coal-fired power stations.

After doing much research I found out that it was happening across the globe, this only made me more suspicious. Anyone who has ever played Monopoly knows that you never sell off your 'utilities'.

Further research brought me into the realm of fusion power. It was then that I began to realize what the governments were doing.

So here is the governments agenda:

Sell the coal-fired power stations to private enterprise

Only lease the powerlines and other infrastructure to them

Know that the private companies don't have unlimited taxpayer funds to keep up with demand

Know that they will continuously increase the cost of electricity to stay on demand

Due to demand overriding supply, accidental brown outs and black outs will begin to happen

Eventually programmed black out will become a daily occurrence

Know that the population will revolt over this issue and demand that the government step in and fix the issue

Eventually the government WILL switch on their new Fusion power stations that are secretly being built as I am typing this.

Now the private run power station companies will be out of business, and THEY have to clean up the sites using their own money.

Know that the people will be so happy to have 24/7 power again that there won't be much resistance to fusion energy from those that don't understand that fusion is so much safer than fission.

@ Grand~ wave

Solar and wind farms are mostly run by private power companies, and they still have a place during fusion power until they become obsolete through old age. Solar and wind will then revert back to where they once were... on sailing yachts and remote/off-grid places.

And in Holland laugh

Thanks for long in dept answers. beer
@ Grand~ wave

Glad to be of assistance... conversing
What a load of baloney
Totally agree with you on that. As I'm sitting here at this very moment we have load shedding again. They shed around 4 to 6 hrs daily in SA.
If all the power stations had been regularly serviced since 1994 then this would never have happened.
Yes I've heard that the only real problem is in the upscaling. I'm sure given enough time and resources even this problem will be over come.
Hi Ozzie,
I doubt if there will be room for them to lay a rotten egg on this one.laugh
Hi Hans,
Don't know if imm mistaken but weren't you in Austria last time I read you? laugh
I'm interested yes, this is real good news when one thinks about it. It will change just about everything to do with energy.
Tnx for the link.
I tend to agree with what you're saying. Makes sense. As I'm sitting here it's a blackout, everything at a stop.
Oh yes if a source is found then kudos to whoever found and supplied. At the moment we are chewing bricks.frustrated
Well said. But never underestimate politicians who have no vision! wink beer
@ LukeOn wave

Sad to hear that you are having blackouts but until fusion comes online, they will become the norm for a while.

As for where I live, I left Austria with my parents when I was about three and a half years old. laugh always been in Australia since then.

conversing
Did you move there because one day your parents got lost, and they saw a sign for Australia and thought, oh yeah, Austria must be this way?
Not sure where I went wrong Hans. Tnx for the explanation cheers
