Professor Cacioppo has spent much of his career documenting the dangers of loneliness. But it’s notable that he relies on more measured statistics in his own scientific papers than the statistics described above. One of his articles, from last year, reports that around 19 percent of older Americans said they had felt lonely for much of the week before they were surveyed, and that in Britain about 6 percent of adults said they felt lonely all or most of the time. Those are worrisome numbers, but they are quite similar to the numbers reported in Britain in 1948, when about 8 percent of older adults said they often or always felt lonely, and to those in previous American studies as well.

Professor Cacioppo is one of the leading voices advocating for better treatment of loneliness. But, as he has written, “to call it an epidemic of loneliness risks having it relegated to the advice columns.”

Sure, they have their place. And they do learn a lot in school and thereafter. Same with NP's. And if they really care, aren't shameless money grubbers, and take time to actually LISTEN to patients, families and their nurses, they have a role in health care. But there is so much about health that they typically overlook, although the younger grads are improving. Diet, lifestyle, socialization, spirituality, and so much more are really where health lies. In many cases, the side effects of many treatments, forget the costs, are worst than the illness itself. And when some non MD's and DO's , like chiropractors, claim that the former only deal with symptoms, they are really speaking as the marginally educated. Thousands of counter examples. But what are your thoughts here? Once an old surgeon during my visit to her, had little good to say about acupuncture, just by way of one example. But she was surprised when I returned after TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine-acupuncture) with my issues gone, while her medicines helped, but only some. Over a century ago, the famous doctor, Sir William Osler, advised his students to simply LISTEN with kind interest to every patient. Vegetative-state patient responds to therapy

A man in France has regained some degree of consciousness after being in a vegetative state for 15 years.
Doctors treated the 35-year-old, injured in a car accident, with an experimental therapy that involved implanting a nerve stimulator into his chest.
Within a month, he could respond to simple instructions, turning his head and following an object with his eyes.
Experts say the results are potentially very exciting, but need repeating.

Vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) may not work as effectively in patients with different patterns of brain damage.

But Angela Sirigu, from the Institut des Sciences Cognitives Marc Jeannerod, in Lyon, said it had chosen a really challenging patient to try the treatment out on.
The vagus nerve connects the brain to many parts of the body and helps controls automatic or subconscious functions, including alertness and wakefulness.

This is of course, with 50 already confirmed dead and another 53 being treated in the ER (some critically injured so the death toll may still rise), the largest mass shooting by a lone gunman in US history and changes will have to happen because of it.


What the changes will be is of course yet to be jelled. We now know the shooter is/was a US Born citizen of Afghan descent. We know he had an AR-15, a pistol and some devices (the bomb squads are still looking at them) he planted around the Gay & Lesbian Club where the slaughters occurred.

I know some are already blaming the availability of guns, but as someone who knows how childishly easy it is to make a gun and the wide spread availability of non-gun kits designed to be completed into guns that work, the presence all over the web of gun blue prints and machines to mill or turn steel and how fairly powerful explosives can be put together in a home with household chemicals such as nail polish remover, paint thinner and an antiseptic (for instance, many other do it yourself compounds are possible and easy) I am not sure thosse facts are the entire extent of the problem.

Obviously because the shooter's parents are from Afghanistan some have seized on that and claim that is proof he was a Muslim extremist and the shooting was ideological in motive.

For me, I need more. For all we know he was Catholic or Christian as both religion's Bibles also speak out against Gays.

What is clear to me is that I am sure there were warning signs of s dangerous psychosis which some people ignored or the official response to was grossly inadequate. We saw that here in VA when a young Asian who had scchizophrenia so badly he was committed for it by his parents, but the Mental Health system in VA failedm citing a 'right to medical privacy' to forward his name to law enforcement which allowed the crazy college student to shoot up his campus. We also saw clear warning signs of dangerous psychosis when a television reporter in Roanoke gunned down former co-workers. And on and on. Aurora, California, Newhall, Connecticut, etc. Fact is most mass shooters turned out to be very crazy people and folks knew it, but also allowed them to leave the psychiatric institutions and often local law enforcement was never notified so their name did not match any records in the law enforcement data bases when they went to buy a gun. That needs to change.

Yes, I concede they could still make one, but often when a mental disease reaches that point, well let's just say making things that work, that ability is often gone. In any case if they were still kept in a nut hospital (political incorrectness of using the Nut word seen and ignored) where they belonged, the only thing they would be permitted to make would be pot holders and oven mitts.

A person in a position of authority who shall remain nameless, has stated that with warmer weather this Covid 19 virus will die out and we can all gather for celebrating the Easter holiday. Unfortunately, this ill conceived idea/plan, overlooked another thing which arrives with warmer weather, namely,
MOSQUITOES.

A lot of progress has taken place in understanding the coranavirus.
The genes have been sequenced and proteins have been made.
Indeed, one of those proteins is a "spike" protein that the virus uses to attach
to a host cell. It's sort of like an anchor that initiates further progress in the
infection process.
After the virus attached to the cell, the membranes of the cell and the virus then fuse,
enabling the RNA of the virus to enter the cell and direct new virus production.

Well, genes for this spike protein itself have been isolated and incorporated into cells.
These cells were then used to make lots of this spike protein.
Subsequently, this protein has been 3D mapped and now it has been sent to many
research teams to both produce drugs for treatment and to use as antigens to make vaccines.

Thus within a month or two, vaccines will possibly become made and tested for effectiveness.
The bottom line, is that progress is rapidly being undertaken.

There may actually be something good to come out of this. The common cold is caused by a virus
in the coronavirus family. Imagine if one of the vaccines against the new virus also works to
prevent the common cold. It is possible. It would be a nice positive side effect.
