Making New Years resolutions

Many people try to avoid making New Years resolutions for whatever their reason may be. However, I for one actually enjoys making at least one to start the new year off. Sadly, many of the ones I have made over the years had failed to stick. rolling on the floor laughing

That's not going to stop me again this year. Have always thought making resolutions were fun, and trying to improve oneself. That's how I look at it.

Have you made any resolutions over the years, and was it a success, or bust?

Plan on making one for the upcoming year, and if so, care to share?

Rolling Coal...

Rolling coal is a new term for me. If you don't know, it's when a diesel pickup exhaust is modified, usually to remove the carbon filter so it emits clouds of thick black smoke. The truck driver can use it to intimidate or anger other cars with the smoke, especially if the billowing cloud obstructs their view.
They get in front or along side the person they want to annoy, smash down on the gas pedal and create the cloud as they accelerate past the other car.

Tesla drivers often 'feel the pain' of rolling coal trucks that have some kind of vendetta against electric vehicles.

In the link I originally saw, the pickup truck accidentally crashed into the barrier, doing serious damage to his vehicle.

The question was asked if it's illegal and the answer is yes, for several reasons.
Modified exhaust and EPA regulations. Intentionally modified vehicle for the purpose of harassment to other drivers.

Some law stuff and explanation:

"Discover the bigger world of love with women who are so different and appreciative"

From an ad slogan I just read on here. What do you make of it?

I know what I get from it.

I get a message that women are not appreciative.

I mean, if they have to advertise that statement...they must feel the same way.

dunno

Actually, it kind of reminds me of some of my old blog topics and content. uh oh

Sayings

There are very very lot of sayings that have come from Mankind since the beginning of his time And most of them are really way out here ,But the crazy on of them all I'd say is this one
It sticks out like a sore Thumb
Can somebody out there please give us an explanation of what this saying means?
How can somebody tell us how one can tell that someone has a Sore Thumb?
And if you don't mind can you explain all of the other sayings that can be challenged as to their meaning?

Adam Smith's 'invisible hand',....

and centuries later, Mr. Greenspan's 'primacy of profit'...., insights into the powers of the free markets, to provide for our needs. As opposed to socialism, or worse, and the failed, VERY failed, 'planned economies'. Count them all.
In some lectures by Canadian (eh?) wannabee Illuminati member economist, Dr. Mark Carney, these concepts were mentioned, in the context of the alleged immorality of Capitalism.
The party line is the absence of what makes people happy and secure in this last named system of production and wealth distribution, ceteris parabus.
Well, even these alt leftie, white guilt, self loathing banker types will admit to two important trends over the past decades. For one, that the systems with the vapid 5 year plans all have failed, and in the process, have caused enormous human misery. If you deny this, have your nurse or doctor bump up the dosages of your medicines for reality testing.
And, similarly, that under Capitalism, the percentages of utterly poor continues to decrease, in many places, and remarkably so.
This is not to say that the many poor are no longer with us, as they always will be. But somehow to try to induce 'social morality' into the fix is wishful thinking. As evidenced by the above, and...
The inability to ope-rationalize or even to crudely measure such social variables, for economic models.
The need for the confiscatory redistribution of hard earned wealth in any such plans. Communism is wonderful, until it runs out of other peoples' assets.
And so, in the words of Republican slave freer President Honest Abe, "You can't help the poor by making the well off poor themselves".
In order for these plans to be put into place, big, VERY big, statist government is said to be needed. Just how is that working out in the many Dem ruled big government cities, and elsewhere? Minorities there more happy?
In planned economies, supposedly all promising equality, "from each's ability, to each's needs", soon a tiny ruling (Party) class emerges, and hangs onto power. Often using force and violence.

And so much more. Be careful what we ask for. The Great Reset, my foot.

'Minimization of regrets' versus 'Maximization of benefits'

The ideas of constantly comparing against standards -self-imposed or caught up in society- and setting 'pass marks' determining your behavior essentially drill down to 'minimization of regrets'. On the short run and in every day life 'minimization of regrets' is going to avoid you getting into trouble. Some trivial examples: "No I won't finish this bottle of wine by myself, less I'll have a hangover tomorrow" or "No, I won't binge watch this series, cause the whole week-end will get screwed up." or else "No I won't buy that splendid car, to outshine the neighbors cause I can barely afford the down-payment".

Last example already shows that 'minimization of regrets' also makes you unhappy in the long run. Your desire to conform or to excel clearly conflicts with personal ambition and priorities in life.

The opposite theorem is 'maximization of benefits'. Whereas this might be a highlighted concept in an undergraduate's economy course, it also applies to long term perspectives in life and brings fulfillment and happiness in the long run.

Once more some trivial examples to get the 'feeling': "Yes I continue playing piano/classical guitar even though my fingers hurt, cause I feel I can play this concerto flawlessly with a little more effort". Or: "I'll put aside my smart phone until I finally master this physics course". or else "I'd rather spend an hour a day learning Portuguese on Duolingo than squandering the time on TV or YouTube during this lock-down".

Dating environment
The bifurcation also shows up when evaluating potential partners in life. 'Minimization of regrets' is going to get you your favorite Mr./Ms Average with pass marks on all criteria you deem essential. It tends to be a lengthy 'procedure of comparisons' possibly paved with some divorces along the road.

'Maximization of benefits' sets you up to find Mr./Ms Exceptional. He/She will have the qualities you value most and the flaws you can most easily forget about.
