Meeting and communication

98% of the time when meeting someone on these sites, that person usually ask if you want to chat elsewhere. My response is, sure, I have a phone, let's talk with each other and hear each other's voice.

Most of the time, it doesn't pan out. This is my little test to see if they're on the up and up and not a bot just looking for some info on you, like your email for one.

I'm pretty much old school when it comes to communicating over the phone, and just not looking at words on a screen. I like to hear a voice. Is that so bad?

Anyone else feel the same way?

The phony wedding invitation............

There was a drug deal going down that night in rural Michigan. It was September 4, 1990, just after sunset in the town of Owosso, population 16,360. There, about 90 miles northwest of Detroit, the Shiawassee River meanders past a hamlet of low-rent, brick apartment buildings. Inside one of them, a dealer with a brown mustache handed a bag of marijuana to Debbie Williams. He told her firmly it was $20 for the quarter ounce, nothing less. “It’s a good thing you don’t want anymore,” said Williams, “because that’s all I got.”

She spoke with the slow drawl of a habitual stoner. But she was an undercover police officer, and one of the few women to have crawled, shot, and boxed her way through the male-dominated police academy in Flint. Since graduating college she had dreamed of catching criminals (“Michigan State police required female employees to have four years of college,” Williams told me, “its male applicants, none”).
She was 30 before they let her in. Now, the 38-year-old divorcee with a shock of curly blonde hair was her department’s undercover secret weapon, because buying drugs was easy when you didn’t look like a cop.

Waiting in a battered ’78 Chevrolet outside, Williams’s new partner was even more inconspicuous. Lacy “Moon” Brown, 47, had earned his nickname by dropping his pants during undercover operations. “If I moon them, they’ll never think I’m a cop,” he told the Detroit Free Press. Long-haired and overweight, Moon was known for his preference for rare burgers, his two-packs-a-day cigarette habit, and his sketchy past. “If you saw him, you’d never believe he was a cop,” says Lieutenant Gary Parks, a former colleague. “He had food stuck in his beard.”
Moon, says Williams “was more believable as a bad guy than he was as a police officer.” Together, they had been tasked by their superiors to pose as a drug-frazzled couple, to gather evidence on every dealer in the area. That night in Owosso, the blonde and the vagrant drove off into the night, drugs in hand.

“We had a serious drug problem in the county at that time,” recalls former Shiawassee County Sheriff
In 1987, Money magazine named Flint the worst place to live in America. Dealers were at large, peddling cocaine, marijuana, LSD, and prescription pills.
After months of undercover work, Williams and Moon had information on more than 40 suspects, but the department realized it didn’t have the funds or the manpower to round them all up. So it had to come up with clever ideas. “Cops used to offer parolees free tickets to the Detroit Lions, then arrest them,” recalls Peggy Lawrence, a Flint historian. On one occasion, Moon quietly arrested and locked up stolen property dealer, announced his death in the newspaper, and arrested gang members who showed up at his fake funeral. “Sometimes you gotta do things that are simply funny,” Moon later told a television reporter. “People gotta go to jail, but it doesn’t always have to be sad.” In 1990, the department planned a particularly elaborate operation: Officers would throw a fake wedding, invite all the suspects, and arrest them.

It's right around the corner.

It may be early for some of us, but many other folks (including those where I live) have already begun preparing for Christmas. Yes, there’s Thanksgiving in the US, and Divali/Dewali in my homeland, India and other parts of the world that are way before Christmas, but the preparations for those seem to take second place.

In my country, October usually marks the start of preparations with shopping for curtains/drapes and other decorative household items, repairing or replacing old furniture and appliances, soaking fruits in wine and rum to make fruitcakes, cooking and baking of seasonal foods (and snacks), and the list goes on. When I was a child, Christmastime at my grandparents was a very fun-filled, family-filled and food-filled time (my grandmother was a great cook, and also a great baker).

There’s so much to like, and to do during this season that is really good. But I also know that there’s a bit of it that’s not-so-good. The year is quickly ending and Christmas is right around the corner. Whether you are a ‘Bible believer’ or not, almost everyone is affected by Christmas either directly, or indirectly. There aren't many other holiday seasons that have the kind of impact that it does; I know of many non-Christians that really enjoy what this season has to offer.christmas happy

We had quite an important visitor today.

A few hours into my shift, I looked outside at the parking lot, to see a particular truck parked there. What kind of truck was it? It was THE weather truck. The one that's famous here in Denmark. It's a Ford Ranger, 3.2 diesel. Anyway, side note.. Why was it here? Why was there a camera crew by the tires? Well.. Apparently, they had to make a piece about tires - specifically winter tires. They had a guy from Continental, the tire manufacturer, come and explain some very clever stuff about tires, I didn't hear it all, because I was busy working. Form what I could gather from my coworkers, it was about how choosing the correct tire meant your fuel economy improved.

They were on site for about 30 minutes, but it was a lot of fun to see how a piece like that was filmed. I don't know when it will be out, but when it is, I will watch it to find out what it was about.

Meanwhile, the weather is getting colder, I'm reaching my breaking point with a friend, and I'm extremely tired. All in all, a great week.

Winter? NO!!

Our heat wave descended to winter temps. I refuse to fire. Run space heater. I can wear more and stand 65. Ok, maybe bring up a second heater and run both. FINE! I can take the hint. Should run wood furnace outside now to check it out before needed anyway. Yesterday I was with heater. I don't want to go outside..it is only 45 and windy. doh So, it is too cold to go out to start a wood fire to heat the house?frustrated Out with me!! Winter mode is all cats live on that side of the house and pile on top of the furnace. My wood furnace is in a close area and under cover.
I had already taken the bucket off for summer rains and checked chimney with mirror. Started to add paper, cardboard and twigs to start. Two cats jump to the table, ready to leap to furnace. DUMMIES! It is not hot yet!scold roll eyes laugh
Got a fire going and went inside. Sitting on pins and needles. YIPEE! There goes the blower, all is good.
Summer I am always out the living room door. So feed cats on that side in the loggia. Old cats were already migrating to other side prepared for winter switch. But, two new kittens. One half tame, other very tame. As in I squat to work and she climbs to sit on my back. Get both kittens, into house for canned food and take out kitchen side. Put both on top of furnace. This is warm in winter. Here sits you.
Go out to do barn chores, there is my shoulder sitter, Dottie.sigh Come back up from barn, grab, carry through house and put on furnace. STAY.
Old ma cat came up to eat inside. Put her out LR door and...frustrated very mad There sits Dottie. Meow?
Pick up, across house and on furnace. Kittens were there when I did night fill.
This morning, went out with kibble and to fill wood and..both kittens were there. Finally!
It is a hoot in winter. I average 15 cats in winter. They pile on top of the wood furnace. You can tell who got shoved against the chimney pipe too close. White cats with brown fur. A couple of times even the outer guard hairs singed off. Huh..didn't you notice maybe getting a bit TOO WARM?dunno rolling on the floor laughing

Making plans for the USA! (part 5)

I know, I said that the next update would be when I had saved up enough money for my trip. I did not tell the truth.. I'm sorry..

Anyway - in this episode, we will go over my latest acquirement: the Electronic System for Travel Authorization, also known as ESTA. What is an ESTA, I hear you ask? Well.. I'm glad you asked!

Any tourist in the Visa Waiver Program, VWP for short, needs an authorization to travel to the USA. If you don't have it, you are not getting into the USA - full stop. It's 21 USD to get, so it's not the most expensive thing in the world. On the application form, you need to give the following information: The applicant must provide the following information:

Full name and gender
Other names or aliases, if any
Date and city of birth (according to passport)
Country of nationality and passport
Other nationality including historic, if any
Passport number and expiration date
Address
Parents' names, if known
Employer's name and address, if any
Emergency contact, name, phone and address
U.S. point of contact information (a person, business or hotel one intends to visit)
Whether the applicant is a member of Global Entry

Applicants must also specify whether any of the following applies to them by way of yes/no answers.

Applications will be denied if the applicant:
Has a physical or mental disorder posing a threat to others, or is a drug abuser, or has one of certain contagious diseases such as cholera, diphtheria, tuberculosis, plague, yellow fever, ebola or severe acute respiratory illnesses

Has ever been arrested or convicted for a crime that resulted in serious damage to property, or serious harm to another person or government authority

Has ever violated any law related to possessing, using, or distributing illegal drugs

Plans to engage in or has ever engaged in terrorist activities, espionage, sabotage, or genocide

Has committed fraud or misrepresented oneself or others to obtain, or assist others to obtain, a visa or entry into the United States

Intends to seek employment in the United States or was previously employed in the United States without prior permission from the U.S. government

Has been denied a U.S. visa, or been refused admission to the United States at a U.S. port of entry

Has previously stayed in the United States longer than the admission period

Has traveled to Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria or Yemen on or after March 1, 2011

Seeing as I'm not a danger to any form of society, my application was approved within two hours. This doesn't mean that I'm safe to enter the USA, though. An airport security person can still reject me, if they feel that I'm not honest about my visit to the States. Should that happen, I would be put on the first flight back home. But I'm quite confident that I will not be rejected at the border, and that I'm allowed to have a week full of fun and shenanigans in the USA. I have so much to see and so much to do!

Making plans for the USA! (part 4)

It's time for another installment of your favourite blog series: "Making plans for the USA!". On tonight's episode: Seats.

While I have no problem being assigned a seat at random when I check in, I do love a window seat. Do I scoff at an aisle seat? No. I just prefer a window seat. I love to look out over the clouds as they pass underneath me. It calms me down. Therefore, I decided to book my seats today, 206 days before departure. I booked 4 seats - one on the flight from Copenhagen to Frankfurt, from Frankfurt to Washington D.C., and the same for the trip home.

So.. Where are my seats? ...over the wings. Why did I pick those seats? Because I have this idea, that the wing is the strongest part of the plane. I know that the odds of dying in a plane crash it one in eleven million, but I'm still nervous every time I board a flight. I used to be scared of flying, but the more I do it, the more I find it boring. You're in a chair in a metal tube, hurtling through the air, and all you can really do is look out if the window. Or watch a movie. Or sleep. Or read a book. Or get hammered drinking champagne (or beer, whichever your wallet or bank account dictates).

Anyway...

The fact is, flying is super boring. The only fun thing is taking off. Then you'll really feel the absolute sheer POWER that those engines can produce. The plane I'm flying with to the USA from Frankfurt is a 64 meter long, 124.5 tonne, 871 km/h traveling, 277 passenger ANIMAL with a wingspan of 60 meters. The last speed filed was 567 mph, or 912 km/h. It must have had a tail wind or something.

Mind you, I DO love a good and smooth landing. You know, one of those landings that doesn't rattle your teeth out of your mouth, or cause an injury to your spine. I loved rough landings when I was younger, but not anymore. I guess I'm getting too old for that, and my body just isn't as young as it used to be.

Anyway, more episodes to come at a later date. The next update slash episode will be when I have saved up about $1000, which shouldn't take long. About three months, maybe less. Until then, you can look forward to regular blogs about.. Something else..

Until then:
