Financial Planner...

It's time I do some planning for my future. COVID changed my plans of buying houses/condos in need of repair, doing renovations and selling/flipping them for profit.
House prices are off the scale and if you actually find one it's a bidding war to get it.
So my direction must change and I need to see the advice of a certified financial planner.
By coincidence, one of my clients is in the business...

NOW HIRING...

I hit a few appointments today where one was at a construction site and another the service entrance to a large condominium. It's become normal to have NOW HIRING painted on the work trucks.
Why the constant advertising for tradesmen ??
I suppose when times are good, businesses are expanding and always have the word out for more help.
I cannot say, times are good right now, so my realistic thought is the working conditions with those companies is so bad that they have a constant turnover in help, thus requiring hiring all the time!

That reminds me of a company I worked for 35 years ago where the owner didn't have to fire many people... they usually quit after a month or two.

I think at one point, he had employed every cabinet maker in the county.

Your daily dose of Donald... 10-17-2022

It was no secret that membership for Trump's golf courses and Mar-a-Lago increased when he became president. I've heard the term increased significantly a few times.
That's not the only increases.
ABC News reports the Trump Organization has a history of overcharging the government when it comes to Secret Service staying at Trump hotels. According to an investigation released Monday by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, Secret Service paid more than 5 times the recommended government rate.

"$1,160 for a room at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C. for agents protecting Eric Trump on March 8, 2017. The government rate for D.C. on that night was $242. On Nov. 8, 2017, another ledger shows that the Secret Service was charged $1,185 to lodge agents protecting Donald Trump Jr. The government rate was $201."

Secret Service for adult children of the president, Eric and Don Jr. at five times the normal government rate.

Reader reviews swing both ways, some in defense of Trump and Biden sending millions in military aid to Ukraine. The key factor is the Trump Organization profited from SS stays at his hotels/resorts.

Bannon and the wall...

Steve Bannon is in New York court today facing multiple charges that include conspiracy & money laundering for his work with a non-profit 'Build the Wall' that raised $25 million to build a wall on the Southern US border.
I clicked one of the links that describes construction will be on privately owned land and work started without a permit.

Sounds like an interesting event and I've got to say that Steve is a busy guy!

"No Good Deed Goes Unpunished"

Finally! I've procrastinated on opening a US dollar bank account in Canada as I had two US accounts, one business, one personal. As those two accounts served me well, I didn't see the point in opening another account in Canada that would charge me fees. The two US accounts didn't charge any fees at all.

I'd opened the US business account back in 2004 with no problems. Never any overdrafts or issues with it. I used that account to purchase my US supplies and it's been a very handy account. Paypal and Amazon deposited funds into my account and they were declared on my Cdn income.

Well, new bank laws and my US bank supposedly informed me via letter, which I have never received, that I required a US business license to have a US business account or they would close my account. Nice that I never got that letter. I'd been to the bank twice to get this straightened out, and at no time did they tell me that they were closing my account on the 16th of July.

So I drive two hours to where the closest bank is on Monday to sort everything out, and they've already closed my account and a cheque for the funds will be in the mail. What?! Why can't I have the funds right now and close the damn thing out. Nope, bureaucratic bs, they'll mail the damn cheque on the 24th.

I asked who they were mailing the check to, the business or me personally? They didn't know, and I said, well, if you mail it to the business, how am I supposed to cash it with no bank account? With a lot of folderol, they finally agreed to cash it when I receive it, which means ANOTHER two hour drive to their bank. I've never seen or heard of such poor service in my entire life. Not once did they tell me that I needed to get my money out by the 16th in either of my visits and that they were closing my account regardless.

So I checked into getting a US business license, despite the fact that I don't actually do business in Washington. All my business is conducted online, including purchasing the postage. The license for the city I'm closest to is actually no fee, except they have different categories which could be up to $800/year, and it also means I'd have to file both US and Can taxes, which means more $$ out for accounting. Nuts to that.

Google also owes me $$ and refuses to pay me unless I have a US bank account in Canada. They would not deposit into my US account. I've been avoiding that due to the costs of opening and maintaining that kind of account, and haven't been paying any banking fees. So now, it's going to cost me for them to deposit money into my business US account, and for every transaction I do.

In reading their criteria, though, I'm thinking I'd be able to open a US personal a/c in Canada and they could deposit into that, as I don't see where it says it has to be a business account. I may just close the business one then, and open a personal a/c which would be a lot less fees.

Gawd I hate dealing with banks, or any financial institutions. Legalized loan sharks. Talk about a money grab for a business license. I already pay over $400/year to cross the border commercially to throw my parcels in the mail, so any further fees just aren't worth it.

Obviously, they don't want my business which is fine with me. Once I have the cheque for my closed account (bastids! - do they care that I need the funds to purchase supplies right now?) I'll be closing out the other personal a/c and opening one at a bank closer to the border.

And here I was being honest about my business and ensuring everything was kept separately. Ha! "No good deed goes unpunished."

Things that annoy me #42,067...

I'm shopping for a condo and called the realtor from one of the listings I'm interested in. She apologized as the property was sold and neglected to notify the website to remove the ad.
File this under unprofessional laziness.

Some realtors have other listings and bait people with really good ones that just happen to have been sold... but if you are interested, they have others that are somewhat more expensive than the one that hooked you in.
File this under deceptive sales tactics.

Blog ideas... 'If' I were asked to be a moderator.

I never run out of ideas to blog. Most of the time I write notes or comments on the back of envelopes or sticky notes and put them on my do list. The list is growing and for lack of free time (and not wanting to annoy other bloggers with more than one blog per day) I'm unable to put these thoughts/ideas to electronic retrieval, as in a collection of my thoughts to be shared with others.

It's my belief that a blog should or could be a complete thought, story or idea that can stand on it's own. While comments are allowed, a blog that asks questions or solicits comments or opinions of readers (according to the rules) would be better suited on a forum for discussion. That doesn't mean you cannot have lots of comments and enjoy a blog, it means that in concept, blogs aren't supposed to be streaming live conversations like social media. Sure, you can dispute this, but I'm speaking in terms of the posted rules for this site.

Dating sites have rules and blog sites list rules for the user to see BEFORE posting a blog. I remember one site made you click a box agreeing to their terms of use before your blog got posted. Most have a word filter that will block words that are deemed offensive. I've had some blogs denied until I removed things that didn't meet their requirements. Sometimes it made little or no sense, like the time I was listing prices and statistics and the moderator blocked me thinking I was giving out my phone number. I had to rewrite some parts to get it published.

I am curious why the CS 'blog rules' are below the 'submit blog' button., as if to say... here are our rules, do as you please. As a recent member, I've refrained (as best I could) from participating in blogs about 'blog wars' and the problems encountered with the Connecting Singles site... not parts but the entire site.

Unable to comment or blog in my probationary first week at CS, I read lots of blogs and forum posts. Trust me, those comparisons to the defunct Matchdoctor has/have ConnectingSingles ahead by a landslide. The insults run 10 to 1 over MD and the members here are still active. Anywhere else the moderator would close the profile, delete all the blogs and posts where the member had commented.

I thought about that today and felt my opinion was going in the wrong direction. I've changed my mind. Don't boot them out. Do it like the Medieval days where offenders were made a spectacle for public viewing! CS could create a Purgatory page where the person who was offensive would have their photo posted with a list of charges and how long they are expected to be in Purgatory. Public flogging at it's finest! The profile would be locked so the member couldn't delete their photo or information and unlocked when their time in Purgatory had expired.

Seriously, if there's an opening for a moderator (raises hand) pick me... pick me !!

I'm getting a warm fuzzy feeling about this...

US Government Needs to Step Into THIS Century

The end of the year and, as usual, the stupid US border patrol has deemed that everyone has to file an electronic manifest. Okay, that's not a problem. The problem?

They use Internet Explorer! No one uses that out-dated browser anymore. No one. Oh, but the US government does. And you can't even get into the site without it. No wonder the government gets hacked.

I use a Mac exclusively. I don't do PC - ever. I hate the stupid things. So now I've had to get a pc just so I can file a manifest. I'm beginning to think it'd be cheaper and easier just to mail the stuff from Canada and to hell with customs.

My sister gave me an old laptop of hers with some pixels missing but good enough to still use. So I open it up this morning, and 3% of 76 updates pops up. Oh great. So now it'll be who knows how long for the thing to update before I can even use it! And yes, I have to go south with a manifest today. What a major pain in the a$$.

So I guess I'll go with the old paper manifest and just bite the bullet on going in. I cannot believe that the government would be so far behind that they'd still use Internet Explorer - which Mac doesn't even support anymore.

What a stupid system that people HAVE to have a PC in order to file a manifest. I've never seen anything so backwards in my whole life. The entire business world makes their sites compatible with all operating systems.

If the US government wants to be the greatest, try stepping into this century.
