hollandgirl: Emphysema. Just been told yesterday that I now have emphysema. I quit smoking in 84 and my doctor told me it takes 35 years to not have long problems of some kind.
Quit smoking I smoked for 20 years. Stopt cold turkey. If you make up your mind to quit, it makes it easier.

Thanks for sharing, it must be tough to hear this from a doctor. I am sorry to hear this. I hope this will work as an incentive to help others.

My heart and thoughts are with you. I have not been long on these forums, and I get a bit muddled at times. But i have a true soul, which I see you as well do. and when I go to the beach tonight I shall put rose petals from my garden into the tide, "for you". Its a to let you know in my way, you shall forever float. Amazing for you to share. Thankyou
I think I contributed to my 2 sons not taking up the habit. First, by setting an example by being a non smoker. I think a kid with a parent who smokes and especially with 2 parents who smoke are predisposed to start smoking because they see this as normal adult behavior. As a child myself smoking was pervasive, in movie theaters, restaurants, planes, busses, subways, on TV, in movies especially. Second, I tried to teach my boys about money unlike so many parents my kids never got an allowance. I paid them for extraordinary chores that they weren't obligated to do but generally being basically lazy, they stayed broke. When they did have money, the last thing they were going to spend it on was stupid cigarettes. Also, their friends who smoked knew it was useless to tap them for money to buy cigs. I think this is one of the ways a kid starts smoking. He buys cigs for his friends a few times and sees them gaining "enjoyment" from them and something clicks in his mind. "Hey, I paid for them and they are getting enjoyment from it and I'm not, I want my share of the enjoyment, I paid for it afterall." It's a subtle form of peer pressure.

I would like to add to what you put here ooby dooby if I may. I think that with being around parents who smoke, you actually become addicted to nicotine from second hand smoke during childhood, so you are already a smoker so to speak. My father smoked cigars and us kids were stuck in the car with the windows up all the way, sometimes for hours on long trips. When I would go with my mom to visit my aunt, I would stand behind my aunt copping hits of her second hand smoke...intentionally. I liked it. Funny thing though, my sister and my brother don't smoke and never have. That's all.

I agree with you.
The important thing now is that you don´t smoke anymore and in
