(to no one in particular, just a few thoughts..) It has occurred to me for quite awhile now that in older photos, say, from the 1800's through the first decade or so of the twentieth century, the people are almost never smiling, or even have anywhere near a mirthful look on their faces. Just very stoic, somewhat bored looks.

I'm guessing most are not used to a Camera at all, and what to do
or not do when one is pointed at them, as well as hard times in
those days, so many were probably not full of glee.

that's down to how long early photographs took to expose. it's much easier to maintain a somber expression for the few minutes it could take, rather than attempt to maintain a smile. as people's smile wouldn't remain fixed the movement of the mouth would cause blurring in the photograph.
