I off-set my travel carbon footprint by having a two day love-in when I arrive.
Only renewable energy expended.

For the right person I could travel to the other side of the world.
Of course it is easier with short distance. Planning a trip takes less time, no visa application, and meetings face to face can happen earlier. On a long distance relationship doubts can easily come, signs from other cultures misinterpreted. And the time between planning a trip and actually travelling also opens the door to doubts. And then there are the considerations about the possibility of the one to get the residence permit in the country of the other or a third country where they could live together.

I have seen it "work" for some couples I know or know of. Sometimes it gets on my nerves when one partner or the other goes into a relationship and/or marries, and then gets his/her nose out of joint. (You don't marry a truck driver and then complain about him not being home...) A very successful marriage in Portland, Oregon was an engineer who had a part-time hobby of drag racing (for pay) and his wife was an actress who traveled to L.A. and Europe frequently. It worked for them---seems to never work out..
