It saddens me to say that Will Smith resigned from the Motion Picture Academy. The reason I am sad is because he is such a good actor and I will miss his movies. In one brief moment he sabotaged his career.
If only he had sat in that chair and stewed about what Chris Rock said and then vented and showed his anger when he was out of the theatre.
Do you think this is a lesson to teach those who have a short fuse to let that fuse burn until the fire is out?

This makes me sad too. If this were to happen to "two ordinary people" then nothing would have been said. I totally understand where Will Smith was coming from. Rock openly made a joke out of Will Smith's wife regarding her alopecia . It wasn't nice and totally uncalled for. I would have probably smacked Chris Rock in his face if he would have made a "joke" regarding "Autistic" people. He deserved what he got. Maybe Chris could learn from this

I think it's time these ceremonies were put on the back burner to be honest. It's just an excuse to parade one's wealth for a night. Awards are fine but when you look back at the past history of the Oscars it's not the first incident that has occurred publicly or privately.
His resignation just means he cannot vote any more so what has he lost.
Mrroscoe03: I'm still trying to figure out why I should care about this whole stupid staged incident....
Fun fact : I don't.
Are you sure that's staged?
Sometimes I don't know what to believe coming out of Ukraine but in times likes this it would surprise me not at all if the most factual news story came to us from the world of fiction.

Normally the way that fiction tells the truth is by transporting us to another time and place where we can speak without causing offfence to today's standards. Star Trek did that. None of us have skin in the game of the 24th century therefore you can comment on today by pretending that you're talking about the future.
And yet I'll accept punching a man live on stage as honest. Not that honesty is always the best policy. If you honestly feel like punching someone i say fake it until you make it. You didn't punch him in the face, you can build on that. But now everything else has to be a lie. I hit him in the face because of alopecia not because I have a wife who makes me want to kill myself. Sure you did, Will

People only learn what they are open to learn. I am not sure how many will learn from his experiance. But if even one learns something good from this that is a good thing. This is just how I feel about it. I wish he would of stood up sooner and made a better apology. And I wish he would of mention "seeking help for my issues" (which is really none of my business) It would of made me look at him more favorably. Comedians are famous for making jokes at other peoples expense. I do not feel like Chris ever dreamed it would go to that level. The way Chris has handled the whole thing has been an example on how to move on with your life even when it is not going like you would like. Kind of like my Mom use to tell me when I was in a bad area in my life. Keep putting one foot in front of the other. I do not like to see anything resolved with violence if there is any other way. And Will had lots of other ways. He actually in my eyes looked foolish walking up there and doing that. I believe it was real but in Hollywood how would one really know?

At other peoples expense. Why is this ok? Why is there no one saying, hey this isn't right? It it was you or your spouse that was being publicly slagged, would you tell yourself to 'calm' down or would you stand up to that bottom feeder?

Chris Rock is doing fine. His show Ticket prices were raised significantly so he will be able to go on slagging other people and become richer because of it. How is this right? Why are so many people allowing this bottom feeder to be treated like royalty when he has been doing this to many people, and this time he did it at one of the most public venues in hollywood. I think its sad that the perp is not only getting away with sick behavior, he is actually being applauded and treated like he is the victim.
It will take longer than Covid for the world to recover from this "terrible act of violence"... Enough with that nonsense, eh... People fight in Parliaments, who do you think those two are? A man slapped another man, get over it already...

Lesson is a good thing. I'm sure after the decision of expulsion, Will feels the effect of his losing control.
Ten_of_cupss: I guess the other one will learn his lesson too.
Tes of course. Over the years, though, the industry has tolerated snides turned jokes to laugh at. I'm not patronizing this to be the norm but certainly, Will would have been the hero if he tucked in his fist and confront him civilly later.
will smith has had his many moments in comedy as well. it's a joke. comedians touch on many topics and people through out their careers. some people take offense and most know; "okay, that was a good one, i didn't like it but it was a good one".
occasionally it's just bad. some will still find the humor. g.i. jane jokes are not new or unique.
in this case, bald jokes and g.i. jane have gone hand in hand for quite some time now. who knows, in today's culture maybe they'll ultimately blame demi moore. more than a few comedians have incorporated a g.i. jane joke here and there.
alopecia, about 60% of men and 40% of women are affected.
i don't care much for him but bill maharr has a solid point. if that is the health affliction you suffer from, be thankful.
don't feel sorry for willy. it wasn't even chivalrous considering the industry and the many venues they promote to make their incomes. from violence to love, to compassion and ruthlessness.
i suppose no one is or should be exempt. until they become a spectacle of their own doing apparently.

Thank you Tiger for explaining that all his resignation means is that he cannot vote anymore. I thought it meant that he can no longer make movies.
He assaulted Chris Rock and he should have been forced to leave the room. I wonder if they let him stay knowing he would win the Best Actor Award.
