Equanimity

There is a state between happiness and sadness
That is a basic human emotion
It provides a relief from life's stresses
And stimulates a mode of deep reflection

To be happy all the time come what may
Is nothing other than a fallacy
So live your life as it unfolds each day
Be honest to yourself most sincerely

Face the good and bad with equanimity
Coping with the bad times may be tougher
Know that all things will pass eventually
And subsequently you will be stronger

The Other Side

What awaits on the other side
After death takes one's breath away
Billions have taken that last ride
Yet what awaits no one can say

A belief is just a belief
It may provide some with solace
And give a measure of relief
But it's not a proof in this case

All persons will know the answer
When death comes knocking on their door
That's all that can be said thus far
And how it may be evermore

About this poem:
“Strange, is it not? that of the myriads who
Before us pass'd the door of Darkness through,
Not one returns to tell us of the Road,
Which to discover we must travel too.”
(Omar Khayyam – The Rubaiyat, verse 46)

Omar Khayyam was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, and poet.
He was born on May 18, 1048 and died on December 4, 1131.
The verse of his poem quoted was written more than nine centuries ago. The message of his poem still holds today.

My poem, “The Other Side”, is in line with the quoted verse from Khayyam's poem and is not meant to disparage the religious beliefs of anyone.

WOMAN

Woman, rise up and assert your power
For generations you have been suppressed
Let the world know this is your hour
There are certain issues to be addressed

In dealing with areas of dispute
You tend to be much more tolerant
Making you more likely to find the truth
And well suited for management

You have shown in the field of education
Regardless of the area of learning
You can hold your own against men
Yet workplace equality is lacking

Woman, rise up and assert your power
For generations you have been suppressed

Tropical Splendour

Tropical sunshine
streaming down
from a clear blue and white sky
with fleecy white clouds
edged with wisps of mist
like giant grains of popcorn
drifting slowly by
way up in the sky

The sunshine
bathing the sugar cane fields below
with golden sunbeams
saturating the texture
of its long grass-like leaves
with its radiance
enlivening them and
transforming the fields into
an emerald sea
of brilliant green

Tropical breeze
swaying the sugar cane leaves
gently caressing them
making them dance in unison
like the waves of the ocean

The dancing leaves
vibrating in harmony
with each other
create a murmuring sound
that builds in intensity
and reaches a crescendo
like the roar
of the waves of the ocean
setting the leaves
in a wild dance of ecstasy
and then gently subsiding
to the soothing sound
of a gentle breeze
inducing a state
of peacefulness
and tranquillity

At such moments
alone with nature
one can feel a strange unity
with everything around
Unity that is so strong
and overpowering
that one loses consciousness
of one's individual self
one has no consciousness
of time and space
but only of that moment
- the infinite eternal NOW

One's consciousness seems to merge
with a deeper consciousness
of the unity of all things
in nature and the cosmos
One experiences an awareness
of a deeper reality
that is impossible
to describe in words

One makes contact
with one's cosmic roots
in a dimension where
time and space
are irrelevant
It is the synchronisation
of one's consciousness
with the absolute
and ultimate reality
of the cosmos

About this poem:
This is my signature piece of writing, as conveyed in the last three paragraphs:

"At such moments alone with nature one can feel a strange unity .with everything around. Unity that is so strong and overpowering that one loses consciousness of one's individual self; one has no consciousness
of time and space but only of that moment - the infinite eternal NOW.
One's consciousness seems to merge with a deeper consciousness of the unity of all things in nature and the cosmos. One experiences an awareness of a deeper reality that is impossible to describe in words.
One makes contact with one's cosmic roots in a dimension where time and space are irrelevant. It is the synchronisation of one's consciousness with the absolute and ultimate reality of the cosmos."

As a young boy, around nine or ten, I used to love to be in the sugar-cane fields in my native tropical island, Trinidad. I got a natural high, being dazzled by the brilliant sunshine and listening to the sighing of the sugar cane leaves as they swayed in the breeze like the waves of the ocean. I felt that Nature was speaking to me, transporting me to another world where I connected with my cosmic roots, becoming part of the unity of all things.

dark clouds

dark clouds
hovering in the sky
permeate my being
creating a state
of sombre calmness
deep within the core
of my psyche

unperturbed
by distractions
in the environment
I find tranquility
and peaceful serenity
in the innermost depths
of my being

my psychic energy
links with
the cosmic energy
underlying
the unity of all things
pervading space and time
inducing in me
feelings
supreme and sublime

I sense
some ultra dimension
an ocean of energy
to which the
life energy of
all living things return
after the last breath
is taken

Rain

rain is falling on the window pane
with a very pleasant refrain
that is soothing to my brain
it does not leave a stain
so it's not a pain
it stopped it's reign
once again
there's no
rain

Technology and Man's Destiny

The knowledge I have given man
empowers him
to chart his own destiny
Will it be for his betterment
or his detriment
I can only wait and see

Technology itself is not responsible for the ills associated with it.
It is the use of technology. And who decides that?
