Traditions

I'm not big on following my family traditions mostly because I follow the traditions of where I am at - at the time. Traditions are different and I seem to like most of them.

On New Year's Day I think I will cook Mom's traditional meal which is supposed to bring in money, success, prosperity, good health and I forget if anything else. I have to have her tell me again what all it is but what I remember is cooked greens, black eye peas, pork (I think) 12 green grapes (one for each month) - I forgot what else. My daughter who has only lived in Florida follows my Mom's tradition. I've been so non-traditional that I can hardly remember any of the other traditions from my friends. Then Mom can take some to Dad and they both get to celebrate one more family tradition.

I know one thing I don't have to worry about anymore is hang overs. If I ever did have a tradition it was to not party so hard on New Year's Eve. Now I sleep through it.

As long as nothing bad happens in the next five days - I get to close 2019, my first year of retirement, feeling totally blessed with time to enjoy what I worked for since I was 15. Sadly it was a very hard year on my parents.

However, now you have more time to be able to help your parents and enjoy the rest of the family.
An easy way to incorporate the "Corn For Gold" aspect to the dish in the above roll eyes vid would be to scoop it up with corn chips grin

Sounds great, UF. Social, and especially family, contact. Food and drink, after each her own.Very important on these emotional holidays as well. But you well know all about that sort of thing. Best to you and yours.
I like not having a tradition so I can do anyone's tradition. I'm only doing my Mom's traditional food because she just can't do it with Dad away.

Now I will go watch Mics video.
Fay....

I sleep during New Years, and Christmas Eve most of the time...

Much more fun...
Wow I would love to celebrate in the Ukraine or any other country for that matter.
Where I live, for luck in the New Year, we eat a dish called Hoppin' John.
I had probably the best Christmas/New year in my life when I was working in Sevastopol Crimea, I will never forget the stuffed Peppers and the humungous quantity of local vodka consumed, my time in Ukraine has given my a lifelong passion for beetroot and especially real homemade Borscht, my next job will be in a country that grows and sells beetroot, not available in China or the Philippines.
Getting some Borshst is on my bucket list. My boss from Lithuania said she would make me some, but she never did. oh rats I love beets too, the root and the beet greens.

I like being different, hate describing myself. I have many life long friends and come from a large family. Will not consider a long distance relationship. [read more]
