If the virus had a smell –

Non-smokers who are bothered by smoke – you know how far away you need to be from someone smoking before it doesn’t bother you. Stay that far from others. And we all know how long the smell of smoke hangs in an enclosed space.

Non-garlic-eaters who are bothered by the smell of it on someone’s breath (or their garlicky lasting body-odour) ditto.

Shouting REALLY loads the air with particles. Stay away from protesters. Except from polite ones. First comment refers.

Using high-definition cameras and laser lighting, NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster, conducted an experiment with a group of researchers to capture the movement of microdroplets – particles that are less than 100th of a millimetre in size.

They found these microdroplets are emitted every time we speak – and the louder we talk, the more are emitted. So, two people holding a conversation at a normal distance apart could easily lead to infection.

Rather than falling to the ground, the microdroplets float in the air and drift about. The researchers estimate that a single cough or sneeze can produce 100,000 microdroplets.

“Microdroplets carry many viruses,” says Kazuhiro Tateda, head of the Japanese Association for Infectious Diseases. “We produce them when we talk loudly or breathe heavily. People around us inhale them and that’s how the virus spreads. We’re beginning to see this risk now

Invisible risk

Researchers simulated a situation with 10 people in an enclosed space – the size of an average school classroom. When someone coughed, as expected, the larger droplets fell to the ground within one minute.

But 20 minutes after the cough, the microdroplets were still floating in the air – and had spread through the entire room.

However, when a window was opened, the microdroplets were quickly swept away in the breeze. Any airflow, it seems, will get rid of the super-light particles.

The researchers also say wearing a mask can greatly reduce the spread of microdroplets, helping to protect both the speaker and their listeners from the risk of catching coronavirus.
Exactly!!!

Good point well made!
Whoops sorry that comment was at Merc!

But Reboot, yes, life would be way easier if there was a smell to warn us. BTW I'm a smoker so I probably couldn't shift that piece of paper from a safe distance away sigh
Ok, I guess I took too long writing my post, You can ignore it now. laugh
A lot of overlapping!
Reboot thumbs up rolling on the floor laughing
Mine was copy & paste..laugh
The local post office has several ceiling fans in the service center. I figure that's enough to evenly disperse any virus around the room!
I thought the other day on your other blog that perhaps it would be more sensible to have a petition outlining the financial difficulties people are experiencing.

Perhaps some people's claim for financial assistance has been delayed because of the volume of claimants; perhaps some people can't claim because they haven't been officially laid off, but aren't getting paid either; perhaps some people have expenses that aren't covered, or completely covered by benefits.

Do we really know what difficulties people are experiencing?
Add to that experts are now saying that the risk of catching it outside is so low they won't put a number on it, so unless some coughs in your face you're unlikely to catch it, and it dies quickly in sunlight, also the viral load you get affects how severely you're infected, so the more exposure the worse you'll be.
Now look at (western) government response to the virus, lock everyone indoors 24 hours a day, tell us masks are ineffective, wash the streets with disinfectant etc etc, so it appears to me the governments have acted perfectly if you happen to be a virus doh
The numbers in Asian countries where the wearing of masks is a first line of defense make it perfectly clear how this pandemic should have been approached, but governments have been aware of the virus for around 4 months and to date I have still not been able to buy one doh
Your wrong on all counts Z
Merc, all wrong confused quite a lot of what I said are quotes from "experts" and I'd have to agree they've been wrong many times during this crisis, but are you saying that say Japan has been more affected that here in Spain dunno
Sorry merc zman is correct. I often wondered why hospital staff wear masks but no need for us, common sense tells you if wearing one stops germs from coming out it will do the reverse. doh I have always said the virus is floating in the air so when i eventually leave my house a double mask it will be for a long time to come.

Where the wind blows so does the germs

Hi zman long time no see hope you are well teddybear
Chat, yeah, nobody should get overlooked with that system laugh

As a smoker I also know when I switch on the aircon in the car there's a delicious gust of stale smoke I hope the virus is less persistent than THAT uh oh
Red, take care as ordinary masks won't protect you from the virus, you'll need to buy an approved medical mask for that, but what any old mask will do is stop the particles you breath out spreading into the atmosphere, so if everyone is wearing them the air should be relatively virus free.
V, sounds like your a/c tubes need to be steam cleaned, you'd probably be surprised at the amount of dirt that builds up in them.
Yep zman i have a paper one and a washable black one like Chinese wear, but it will be long time before i go out and about for sure. I will wait for a vaccine, i will volunteer for trials too for if something goes wrong you are monitored.

anyways i reckon this virus changes it is a killer but not the same through out the world so vaccines will change just like they do with flu.

I honestly think for me at least nothing will ever be what i classed as normal, its will be a new normal for future generations
Red, not sure I agree, it didn't take long for the world to forget about Spanish flu and many millions died from that, even now if you look at the stats sites there are quite a few virus free countries already, once numbers get low enough it should be possible to trace contacts on any outbreaks.
You could be right zman but this virus seems a bit more than what i have seen before anyway, it is more virulent, and mucks up your immune system for some it goes on complete overdrive It attacks lungs in such away that if you end up needing a ventilator, well not many survive or their life is blighted for ever.

also maybe my son thinks it has been hyped up too much because in the past they have not pushed the flu deaths in your face every day, so me i will stay safe until i know more or the virus looses its strength
Red,
"anyways i reckon this virus changes it is a killer but not the same through out the world so vaccines will change just like they do with flu."

Where are you getting your information, you are absolutely right about viruses changing.

Some of these viruses are coming from Cosmic particles, like pea sized meteor fragments which are left after chunks of material enter the atmosphere. We know that they contain Virus like organisms. So, that little Meteor on your desk, bin it.

Another way for Viruses to get here is cosmic dust trapped in the air filters in returning spacecraft and space suits. Weren't the Chinese up there recently? hmmm
reboot doh people are so up about Chinese, they have been no different from any country keeping things under wraps, but then when seeing how bad the virus was could not have been more helpful.

You could say that since spacecraft have been breaking into our outer safe circle they let all sorts in doh

anyway viruses do change when they jump from one person to another all depends one persons immune system and what it has done until it jumps on. Either it will get stronger or weaker it remains to be sen

Also in different countries they have all fought off different diseases so stand to reason the virus as it is a surer will change mode to its host. peace
as it is a survivor doh
"On average, meteors can speed through the atmosphere at about 30,000 mph (48,280 kph) and reach temperatures of about 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit (1,648 degrees Celsius)"

"SARS virus, a close relative of the virus of COVID-19, is inactivated at temperatures of 56 to 65 degrees Celsius (132.8 to 149 degrees Fahrenheit)."
zman all our info is on what we have been taught, but remember at one time folk believed the world was flat .

We advance and understand things better so i keep an open mind. Not necessarily about space invasion viruses laugh laugh But i read a science fiction book when i was a kid and they had made an under the sea world housing etc because the earth was so polluted. We all lived much the same as now, wow lockdown in little home cells food delivered by a shute into your home etc, now we are so close hole
Our health minister knows......laugh

Throughout biological history when there is a population boom Nature addresses the balance. Too many grazing animals means not enough grazing, grasses are being uprooted in the effort to get food, no more grass - result, the grazing animals migrate, if strong enough, or starve. And epidemics have wiped out whole species before now. The bee population is under serious threat. Foulbrood does at least have a smell!

I just don't believe city life is natural on any level dunno and every kind of infectious illness does by far the most damage in cities. This virus is no different. Shut people away and you feed it further.

Walk into any airless room filled with people and breathe deep. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. But who remembers walking into a crowded stadium to find their seats as a spectator. Can you smell the hotdogs? The excitement? The sweaty bloke 5 seats away? Did that woman bath in cheap perfume?? No wonder public gatherings have been banned, but this virus really should have a smell.

Maybe that's an interim vaccine idea, something that will help us smell it and duck nervously away. laugh
Luke! rolling on the floor laughing

Seems unlikely alright, but yet we are here. dunno
V, I would have thought it quite likely it does have a smell, they say dogs can smell cancer cells in someone infected so why not a virus, I'd ask my dog but as we've had no cases round here he wouldn't know professor
"The sweaty bloke 5 seats away? Did that woman bath in cheap perfume??" barf

Please, I was just going to eat,, not hungry now. blues laugh
Interesting, no wonder there are so many infections in Spain, if only they could learn to speak at a normal level instead of shouting directly into my face like I´m on the other side of the planet
"inactivated at temperatures of 56 to 65 degrees Celsius"

Space suit filters?
Red, sticking my nose in to the conversation - I think I would rather die. uh oh Maybe maybe maybe the fact that air pollution was so dramatically clearing within weeks will mean more attention will be paid to air pollution when 'normal' life comes back?

You were so lucky in not moving to the smaller garden just before the virus. Your garden and your hard work in it could end up keeping you not only alive but healthy applause
MonkeyFly, laugh that was my reaction when I read that talking loudly increases the risk doh
Z, that's a whole new breed of support dog wow we had the dogs for the blind, dogs for the deaf, now the dogs for the virus? Picture it, a little chihuahua tucked under your arm, sharp yap when it catches a whiff applause
Reboot, I think they've been pretty careful when spacecraft return, more likely if it did come from space it was billions of years ago when something so big hit the planet the earth's atmosphere had little effect on it dunno
Reboot laugh but I'm right, you CAN smell them so that's airflow direct from them to your nose. Now imagine the worse a case of the virus you have, the stronger the smell. Social distancing becomes completely adaptive professor
Monkey, yeah, no WONDER we had such high figures!! And then we locked everyone away so they had to shout across the street to each other from windows. You can just see the virus-laden cloud drifting down the street, can't you? rolling on the floor laughing

Old London-style pea-soupers spring to mind
When I go to the supermarket, every 10 days or so, too many people brush past me, way too close.

As of now I'm not going to wash and I'm going to eat a ton of Garlic and Onions, ..oh and Eggs. thumbs up
and Beans.
