US base names controversy

What to rename the Army bases
Ty Seidule is a retired U.S. Army brigadier general and professor emeritus of history at West Point. He is the author of the forthcoming book “Robert E. Lee and Me: A Southerner’s Reckoning with the Myth of the Lost Cause.”

Ten Army posts named during World Wars I and II honor men who fought for the Confederate States of America against the United States of America. These men committed treason to create a country dedicated to human enslavement. The posts must be renamed — as should another, in Virginia, given what its name honors.

But whom should the Army honor?

The number of Army heroes over the course of the service’s 245-year existence is enormous. Here are just a few suggestions, drawing on soldiers who represent the strength, values and diversity of the Army’s storied history.

These 11 individuals displayed extraordinary courage, competence and commitment. There are hundreds and hundreds of other worthy soldiers who could be honored. Our nation would not miss the names currently on these installations — and the Army has so many heroes to choose from.

WAR IS WAGED ON FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION

Across Europe, especially in France, politicians have decided to wage war on freedom of expression. An eight year old was questioned by the French police, apparently for praising terrorists.Humorists have been questioned and fined because of the nature of their humor.

Projects are currently going on to limit freedom of expression even in the United States. So where are we heading to?

How far are you willing to give up your freedom? By the way, how will restriction on freedom solve political, religious and world problems?

Hypocrisy or security? OR Are we moving towards North Korea way of freedom of expression? Then why do we criticise the North?

Trump : Media is the Enemy of the American People

I watched the interview of Michelle Malkin: "The Left are trying to criminalize political dissent", an awesome information.

Note: I have always maintained that free press is a fundamental right of the people but irresponsible and fraudulent journalism is wrong.

Malkin, claims Trump has finally burst their bubble (press) and they're scared.

Manipulation by social media, ha. Joke.

The latest conspiracy theory - the Russians, masters of disinformation, are feeding contradictory links into social media, sitting back and laughing themselves sick as we fight each other, lose confidence in our leaders, and generally fall apart.

As IF.

We are way too bright for that, right? Everyone I know agrees exactly with me.

If they don't I simply unfollow them, sorted.

I've never felt more confident about the future of western civilization, things are going exactly right, every leader in place has my utmost confidence and is wise, intelligent, taking good advice and acting on it. We are all at peace with ALL our neighbours, absorbing their differences into our culture and getting stronger as a result.

Everything is going brilliantly, so those pesky Ruskies can take all their attempts to stir trouble and stick them where they will never see the sun. Whoops, that could be Scotland. Change it to where they will never see the light of day again.

Nobody here quarrelling or falling out with anyone else, we are United and Stronger Than Ever in all our history. Take THAT. boxing

Don't even bother to disagree. I have my fingers in my ears LA LA LA LA LA I'm not listening laugh

Cuba's Fidel Castro Dies

He lived a long life. May his family and countrymen be comforted during this time of their loss bouquet

Cuba's Fidel Castro, who defied U.S. for 50 years, has died
By ASSOCIATED PRESS 11/26/16 12:44 AM EST

HAVANA — Former President Fidel Castro, who led a rebel army to improbable victory in Cuba, embraced Soviet-style communism and defied the power of 10 U.S. presidents during his half century rule, has died at age 90.

Castro's reign over the island-nation 90 miles from Florida was marked by the U.S.-backed Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 and the Cuban Missile Crisis a year later that brought the world to the brink of nuclear war. The bearded revolutionary, who survived a crippling U.S. trade embargo as well as dozens, possibly hundreds, of assassination plots, died eight years after ill health forced him to formally hand power over to his younger brother Raul, who announced his death late Friday on state television.

Castro overcame imprisonment at the hands of dictator Fulgencio Batista, exile in Mexico and a disastrous start to his rebellion before triumphantly riding into Havana in January 1959 to become, at age 32, the youngest leader in Latin America. For decades, he served as an inspiration and source of support to revolutionaries from Latin America to Africa.

His commitment to socialism was unwavering, though his power finally began to fade in mid-2006 when a gastrointestinal ailment forced him to hand over the presidency to Raul in 2008, provisionally at first and then permanently. His defiant image lingered long after he gave up his trademark Cohiba cigars for health reasons and his tall frame grew stooped.

"Socialism or death" remained Castro's rallying cry even as Western-style democracy swept the globe and other communist regimes in China and Vietnam embraced capitalism, leaving this island of 11 million people an economically crippled Marxist curiosity.

He survived long enough to see Raul Castro negotiate an opening with U.S. President Barack Obama on Dec. 17, 2014, when Washington and Havana announced they would move to restore diplomatic ties for the first time since they were severed in 1961. He cautiously blessed the historic deal with his lifelong enemy in a letter published after a month-long silence.

Fidel Castro Ruz was born Aug. 13, 1926, in eastern Cuba's sugar country, where his Spanish immigrant father worked first recruiting labor for U.S. sugar companies and later built up a prosperous plantation of his own.

Castro attended Jesuit schools, then the University of Havana, where he received law and social science degrees. His life as a rebel began in 1953 with a reckless attack on the Moncada military barracks in the eastern city of Santiago. Most of his comrades were killed and Fidel and his brother Raul went to prison.

Fidel turned his trial defense into a manifesto that he smuggled out of jail, famously declaring, "History will absolve me."

Freed under a pardon, Castro fled to Mexico and organized a rebel band that returned in 1956, sailing across the Gulf of Mexico to Cuba on a yacht named Granma. After losing most of his group in a bungled landing, he rallied support in Cuba's eastern Sierra Maestra mountains.

Three years later, tens of thousands spilled into the streets of Havana to celebrate Batista's downfall and catch a glimpse of Castro as his rebel caravan arrived in the capital on Jan. 8, 1959.

The U.S. was among the first to formally recognize his government, cautiously trusting Castro's early assurances he merely wanted to restore democracy, not install socialism.

The rock and the hard place - a modern microstory about business

The company I worked for, after beating off many attempts at hostile takeovers in the past, was shocked when several of our opposition, including our biggest rival, formed a Corporation uh oh

Then we were invited to join, too. It would cost, a LOT, but we could keep our own directors, our own policies, and would have the advantages of shared technology and advancements. No more hostile takeover bids, either! The staff would be free to advance their careers as recruitment would be centralized, as would a few other departments.

The offer was put to the shareholders, and a slim majority decided in favour. yay

Time passed. Some staff flourished exceedingly, some in minor ways, or were unaffected. Some grumbled, of course, especially the ones made redundant, and the ones who had always distrusted our rivals. dunno

The main problems were that our rival remained the most powerful company in the Corporation, forming alliances to outvote us on issues: a lot of company policy was decided, and dictated, by the Corporation: and our company had little or no say re how our hefty membership fee was spent, but hey, that’s business. Same old.

The Corporation went from strength to strength, investing in a series of companies which my company didn’t always like. Not only did we have to take the staff recruited centrally from those other companies, we didn’t always feel the companies added to the Corporation as a whole – was this good business, we worried, or empire building? We knew other companies in the group had the same issues and felt the same anxieties. There was – restlessness. The new companies needed corporate funding, money which many felt could have been better spent elsewhere. One of the bigger companies hit a financial crisis, and had to be bailed out, which made more of our directors and shareholders uneasy. A lot of money was spent propping up companies failing due to poor management. Staff were being taken on from all over whether or not they had skills to offer, and causing problems as they infiltrated the companies within the Corporation.

Whispers spread that departments central to individual company policy would soon be centralized. We had little say on the Corporation’s future plans, some of which were contrary to our own mission statement. Eventually enough of the shareholders were complaining that an extraordinary general meeting was called – stay in the Corporation, or leave? In the run-up to the EGM, a lot of what can only be called politicking went on, and this time, the slim majority was in favour of going.

The CEO promptly resigned, and was replaced by a director who had been pro the Corporation. The Corporation itself, financially unbalanced and relying on our company’s contribution, with other restless companies in the group, set itself to make the dissolving of the merger as difficult as possible. Staff and shareholders who had benefited from life under the corporate umbrella complained constantly, and were clearly going to make the future as difficult as possible, even though their own livelihoods would be affected by their negativity. They painted corporate life in glowing colours, and our future as bleak. Others, eagerly waiting the opportunities offered by the company being back under its own control, were frustrated by the new CEO’s half-hearted ineffectual plans to dissolve the merger.

A rock and a hard place. Another EGM, to choose between a future increasingly under the Corporation’s control, financial, and management, decisions, with nearly half the stakeholders shouting TOLD YOU SO every time a bad decision is made?

Or breaking free with nearly half the stakeholders determined to make the future as difficult as possible - and as in fact this isn’t a company, without the option to fire the moaners and replace them with pragmatists who will get on with the job?

This is Brexit.

Trump to visit Denmark in September!

According to confirmed reports, Trump will visit Denmark for the first time as President. The whole ordeal will happen at the beginning of September, and last for just 2 days. He is set to arrive on the 2nd of September, and leave on the 3rd of September.

A part of me wants to go to the airport to see Air Force One up close, since I have never had the chance to do that. It'll be great!

I don't really care that he is coming here. I won't participate in rallies against him, neither will I talk badly about him. He just happens to be President of the USA, which is an achievement in itself.

California city will remove gender terms, including ‘manhole’ and ‘manmade,’ from municipal code

More p.c. crap is on the way. Libs keep finding ways to take this stuff to a new level. thumbs down

'Manhole' no more: California city banishes gender-specific words from municipal code

A new law passed in Berkeley, California would rename words like 'manhole' to 'maintenance hole'; Christina Coleman has the details.

Now, the city of Berkeley is taking it a step further.

The city is removing gender-specific words in its municipal code. It will cost the city about $600 to make the changes. The Berkeley City Council unanimously passed the measure to replace more than two dozen commonly used terms on Tuesday.

It will switch words like “he” and “she” to “they” and “them” in the city code. “Manholes” will be changed to “maintenance holes” and references to manmade will be changed to “artificial.”

Councilman Rigel Robinson, a 23-year-old recent graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, sponsored the ordinance. He tweeted, in part: “There is power in language. It’s a small move, but it matters.”

Berkeley City Manager Dee Williams-Ridley wrote in a memorandum to council, “In recent years, broadening societal awareness of transgender and gender-nonconforming identities has brought to light the importance of non-binary gender inclusivity.”

Terms like fraternity or sorority will be changed to “collegiate Greek system residence.” Other terms that will be changed include pregnant woman or women. It will be switched to pregnant employees. Brothers and sisters will be switched to sibling.

Berkeley has a lengthy history of leading on politically and socially liberal issues. Also on Tuesday, Berkeley city council voted in favor of becoming the first city in California to ban natural gas in new building construction. The measure will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2020.

Donald Trump: ‘Haters’ Infected with ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’

President Donald Trump turned to Twitter Wednesday to slam critics of his meeting and press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.
“So many people at the higher ends of intelligence loved my press conference performance in Helsinki,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

He said the meeting was successful, insisting he had made progress on several issues important to the United States.

“We got along well which truly bothered many haters who wanted to see a boxing match,” he wrote. “Big results will come!”

He accused critics of wanting to go to war with Russia, rather than work together on key issues.

“Some people HATE the fact that I got along well with President Putin of Russia. They would rather go to war than see this,” he wrote. “It’s called Trump Derangement Syndrome!”

Trump said the sanctions on Russia would remain but that Putin was willing to help handle North Korea.
