lifeisadream: I did love it the rhubarb crumble, too bad I can not get here and I can not grow it

At $5 a bunch, it's a luxury here and joins the ranks of other extortionately priced fresh produce.

Tomatoes have just hit $9 a kilo and I paid $1.20 for a single onion the other day.

It comes as no surprise that many families simply cannot afford a healthy diet, hence hit takeaway joints for many meals which sees this nation getting fatter and unhealthier by the minute.

It is very easy to grow rhubarb here.

And once you set it once, you have it forever.

People should be encouraged to grow more food themselves, even in a tiny space.
It is amazing how much food one can grow on even the small space of an apartment balcony if one wishes.

Yes I've grown summer salads, herbs etc but it's not realistic or sustainable for the average family as an alternative source of food conversing

It's labour-intensive, expensive and water restrictions have seen many plant nurseries go bust due to lack of custom.

Most do it as an enjoyable hobby.

There is a big drive on here to get more people to grow their own. It would not be as a total alternative to buying product, but as an incentive to need to buy less.

It has also been proven that working with soil is good for mental stability. So even just pottering around with a few veg in your own space has much benefit to individuals.

That is very expensive!

Last saturday I got:

2 kilos of Poblano pepper (redish) for les than 50 cents dollar.
(people do not like them reddish so their price is low almost to get rid of them)
5 kilos of tomatoes (roma) for less than 2 dollars.
3 kilos onions for les than 1 dollar
etc...

all of the above in season

1 kilo plums (Santa rosa) per 1.5 dollar
(I make jello with this)
and etc...
So, here there is not excuse for not eating well.

Redish Poblano pepper like the one from the left.

.
I could kill for a plate of Pie, Mash and liquor from Manze's in Deptford High Street, a plate of Jellied Eels too would go down a treat from Chummy's stall at Folkestone Harbour.
