From the past, I would choose Oscar Wilde. He's my favourite author. Deliciously cynical and witty, he'd make a great dinner guest.
From the present, probably the Dalai Lama. I'd like to hear him speak, and hear his words of wisdom.

PAST: Thomas Jefferson, my favorite President. Absolutely brilliant and had great foresight and warnings for us (sure he is rolling over in his grave lately... over a few things).PRESENT: Angela Merkel. After dessert, I would like to jack her up for destroying Europe

From the present, it would be Clive Stafford Smith, but he'd have to bring his wife along. I've not seen an interview, documentary, seminar, or debate where he hasn't mentioned his wife. I know so much about her, it would be nice to finally meet her. Besides, I'd be rather tongue tied and inclined towards embarrassing obsequiousness in front of the mighty Clive without her.

From the past, Napoleon, from the present, Donald Trump. Napoleon would have to be able to speak English, not a problem, right? And neither could leave until I said so?
As to why, I'm told Napoleon was utterly charming when he wanted to be, and I'm fascinated by driven men. Donald Trump is such an immensely contentious figure, yet has such a mesmeric effect on his followers, I'd love to see him in a normal setting to see why, and if my opinion of him face-to-face changed.
And what a conversational combination they would be, eh? It might be a fairly short dinner, though. I do accept that it probably wouldn't be harmonious, but the chocolate cake for dessert should be good.
