I used to have a "tri coloured" King Charles Spaniel when I lived in my apartment in Spain. They are very loyal and intelligent dogs. Lap dogs as they are known. I took her out first thing in the morning before the sun beat down on the pavement and in the evening when it wasn't so hot. If she was desperate for a wee, I had the pads in my apartment. I would much rather her wee on the puppy pad than her burning her foot pads on a scorching hot floor. As the saying goes "if you put your hand on a hot floor and it burns, then it's too hot for a dog to walk on" I'm now back in the North of England and I have an 8 month old Blenheim King Charles Spaniel. The weather has been quite bad here recently. She has a padded coat for the rain and cold but it doesn't protect her paws. When it was really frosty, she was lifting up her legs, one by one. Dogs aren't stupid. She did what she had to do very quickly as she wouldn't do anything in the house and then pulled to get back into the house grin never underestimate a dog, they're much more intelligent than some humans grin

Sorry, I probably should have provided a little more clarification around my question conversing

So let's cut to the chase.. My thoughts are that it's not right for a dog to be shut in an apartment for eight, ten or twelve hours a day with no company or access to the outdoors during that time conversing

It's not right for a dog to be shut in ANYWHERE for prolonged periods. It would be the same in any home not just an apartment. So many dogs are now being abandoned due to lack of care by owners . A dog is for life .

Unless you have a neighbour or trusted friend who can take the dog out at regular intervals don't get one.handshake

Miss_Cellaneous: Again, blame the person not the dog. I have an 8 month old puppy, King Charles Spaniel. I've spent most of my time to train her. She was 3 months old when I got her from a registered breeder. The Breeder won't sell any pups under the age of 12 weeks. She had all the certificates of health, vaccinations and micro chipped with my name and address etc..I could take her out as she had had all her vaccinations. That was all sorted before I brought her home. "Petal" my little girl, never goes in her cage unless I'm going out and that's for her own safety. Petal sleeps on my bed even though she has her own bed at the side of mine. She knows that I'm the Alpha Female and she does what I tell her to do. She only ever barks when I tell her to "Speak" She's not a guard dog, she's my soul mate To each their own
Why do you cage a dog when you are out ? Have you considered how the dog feels about being shut in , what harm can she come to ?

As for all the vaccines etc that's the norm for any pet not just a pedigree.

Thanks Tiger, I completely agree.

I also feel for doggos that are enclosed in a backyard for hours on end, no walks or interaction with other dogs or people.

Some people should not be allowed pets Serene. They haven't a clue .You should have a relationship with your pet and yes dogs should know boundaries but not have a "boss" .handshake

I have a large dog and live in a two bedroom home with a large fenced in back yard. I also work part time (3 days a week). It was not my intent to keep this sweetie, I rescued her from a bad situation, she was eight months old. But something about her smitten she is laying by me as I type. The excuse the people used to why they treated her so badly was she was a horrible dog and they couldn't help it they hated her very mad What I did because I worked full time then I instantly taught her what a pee pad was and how to use it. That way she was not forced to hold it in if she had to go. I still put them out for the three days a week I do work and in May she will be 3. She rarely uses them now. But they are there if she needs them. The stinker if weather is really bad will use them. She has full roam of our home when I am at work. That was a trip when she was young. She was a chewer, thank goodness my pillows are safe now. I use to wonder if I did right taking her and keeping her and not putting her in a home with children to run and play with her. I know longer wonder that. I know she is right where she should be. I work a early shift and when I get home I swing the back door open to let her out to roam and play. When we are out in public people comment on what a good girl she is and how happy she is. She is also easily trainable. She does it with love. She wants to make me happy. I don't know why the people before me did not like her dunno keeping her was one of the best decisions I have ever made. She is a good friend and a well behaved baby. So I believe yes there are some cases an animal can be happy even being in a home with working parents. I also believe it is my responsibility to make her life as happy and healthy as I can. She is the only dog I have ever had that will wear shoes in the summer if we are going somewhere. Florida side walks and roads are really hot in the summer. Just how I see things. If there are not people willing to do this then sadly many dogs in my area would be euthanized. I believe you can work things out if you are willing to try. I made the decision to go part time at work because I did not want her to be alone all the time. I could afford to do it and should of done it before getting her. Some dogs would be really sad all by themselfs for long periods. That is a fact. I would not know what to do if you end up with a pet like that. Most people I know have to work for a living. I checked into doggie care at first and then reaized May is a homebody. Maybe that would work for those in apartments. And once again not all can afford the luxry of day care. In my area they are always in supply of homeless dogs. But we do have a place that will euthanize. And that breaks my heart. They call is humane euthanization. Wonder what they would call it if they were the ones fixing to get the needle. A pet is a commitment. Just like children. wave

I would never have a dog if I was going out to work every day and travel time and socialising on top of that......think of the dog locked up all day

Dont they have dog sItters or supervised doggy homes where your dog can play with other dogs while you are away from home. They only cost about thirty-five U.S. bucks a day here. Just leave your dog's food with it and your tv too.

In the uk most housing associations and councils will not allow dogs in common entrance apartments, which I can understand.
Not sure what the difference leaving a dog alone in an apartment or a house is though. I dont think people should have a dog if they're out working most days anyway, The RSPCA recommends not to leave a dog alone for mor than four hours..

Should dogs live in apartments?

Different countries have different preferences, when it comes to pets.
Also depends how much you are home with them and the reasons for having them.

Small countries, and small living quarters, they prefer cats.
Americans for example prefer dogs (for the most part)
I certainly do, and always had 2 large dogs 65 lb plus (58.967)

But I would never have large dogs or any dog in an apartment, that seems cruel to dogs (to me).
Dogs need to be dogs, and have a job to do, and should be treated like pack members, not like substitute children roll eyes

I don't like the idea of paying for a dog sitter, or give someone my house key or God forbid, put a dog in a cage, in a kennel, for days so I can travel.

But all in all, I don't mind or begrudge people for having pets, in an apartment or yard or with lots of land. As long as the animals are treated well
