the hawk and the dove

Before the stake
she stood alone
the crowds jeered
and mocked her fate

tis a come down
my lady fair
no wealth will save
your comely frame

as loud the cheers
without no pity
ran throughout
that bloody city

the dove is taken
was the cry
prepare the wood
let her die

her crime
was only noble birth
when revolution
sought its worth

the branches laid
the fire there
while people jeered
no mercy nor a care

but then a bird
swooped
from the sky
perched itself nearby

this little hawk
began to screech
its master came
into the breach

his sword did flash
as did his eyes
he pulled the dove
close to his side

this sword will cut
till it runs red
he cut her free
in that town square

though all around
out numbered there
then from the sky
in white she came

Pegasus
flew down to him
the dove put on
he used his wings

to take her up
and safety there
the hawk and man
were left there

the hawk screeched again
and suddenly
the sky was filled
with cloud and rain

the cloud and rain
were hawks in number
the sword did flash
them to asunder

the work was done
the dove was safe
the hawk and master
had escaped

from there
both journey
to the setting sun
the lady and man as one
