And a Poet Sleeps

And a Poet Sleeps

Crushed memories of yesteryear
Pressed between chapters of age.
Pages full, Of white lace & blackberries.
Moonlit walks,
Holding hands & passionate kisses.
Summers full, of flowers,
lazy days, picnic baskets & rowboats.
Winter brings unwritten poems,
Crushed memories of forgotten years
Too long ago to be remembered in the cold,
hard nights of winter & loneliness.
A life that was not always kind
slips away,
as fingers wrinkled with time
slowly relax, and a Poet sleeps

RIDER'S SONG (ANOTHER)

Cordoba.
Distant and alone.

Black pony, big moon,
and olives in my saddlebag.
Even if I know the roads
I’ll never reach Cordoba.

On the flat, by the wind,
black pony, red moon.
Death is watching me
from the towers of Cordoba.

Oh, what a long road!
Oh my brave pony!
Oh that death awaits me,
before arriving in Cordoba!

Cordoba.
Distant and alone.

Hill of stones

We buried you there
in the lizard bare grass
laid you down
in regimented row

We buried you there
on that hill of stones
where even sparrows weep
in Spring's drizzle dawn

I should have taken you in my bosom
and laid you beneath the peach tree
to blossom and fruit for the Summer children
running madly, circles about your stems

But we buried you on that hill
it is the greatest grief

Poppy

Poppy's lined in rows
Thier petals flutter in the light winds
they flutter in the silent breeze Thier red petals glow
Remember them the fallen now remember them
Lives given the pals the friends the sons taken away now the fallen
Souls now in heaven
The guns the bombs now silenced we remember them

Had I But Taken Left Not Right

Had I but taken left not right
How different things might be
A choice that's made in too much haste
A lifetime for repentance

So many times I sit and ponder
How different life would be
Had I but taken left not right
A choice that's now so clear

Too much drink, too many drugs
And all the late night parties
Life's for living, hang tomorrow
All too soon tomorrow comes

Hot of blood and passionate
Was the life I led
Hot of blood and passionate
Caused her death instead

Had I but taken left not right
And listened to some reason
Had I not drunk, had I not driven
This grave would I not be tending

Dad Died Yesterday

You trapped and scared a buck by slapping your oar on the water
You fell out of a tree while using a monkey vine that couldn't support your weight
You took 3 hours to cut out a log I backed over while we got wood for heat
I dented your truck(sold to someone who still uses it here in town) before fishing
You gave me your left over steak you got at Friedman's
You gave me my first car, a 79 Chevette
You hunted ginseng and morel hunted
You fished for catfish with trotlines
You cut down trees and didn't get hit by them
You drove semis at a pig slaughterhouse that is now an open field in Dubuque
You raised four children and had grandchildren living with you from time to time
You helped me get aluminum cans where I made 400 bucks one summer
You are missed

To Die... Quietly

Lament my soul,
Lament and watch
black trickles
of sweet poison
flows quietly
into my river
that accumulates
in a dam now full
drop after drop
until it gives in
explodes, expose
Wound in my soul
festers in sight
as maggots arise
a horrid stench
from opened heart
left to dry out
under scorching heat
of a raging sun
only to be flipped
engulfed forever
by the darkness
of a cold cold night,
to freeze
to numb
to die
quietly

Tomorrow torn
by savage beaks
of vultures mean!

reflection of our dead

Over the water we gaze
into our own faces
to see the reflection
of our own, gazing back
the ancestors, soldiers,
mothers, heroes, strangers,
children, especially children,
are all there, wrinkled
into our own creases.

We have loved, longed,
respected, saluted,
denied, decried them all.

Set aside remember time
as we too will be in time
set aside...into the water.

But for now, today,
instantly, they come,
streaming back to us
for our deeper reflection.

Time of reflection - Death of a Innocent

I went to a party, Mom
I remembered what you said
you told me not to drink, Mom
so I drank soda instead
I really felt proud inside, Mom
the way you said I would
I didn't drink and drive, Mom
even though the others said I should
I know I did the right thing, Mom
I know you are always right
now the party is finally ending, Mom
as everyone is driving out of sight
as I got into my car, Mom
I knew I'd get home in one piece
because of the way you raised me
so responsible and sweet
I started to drive away, Mom
but as I pulled out into the road
the other car didn't see me, Mom
and hit me like a load
as I lay there on the pavement, Mom
I hear the policeman say
"The other guy is drunk," Mom
and now I’m the one who will pay
I'm lying here dying, Mom...
I wish you'd get here soon
how could this happen to me, Mom?
My life just burst like a balloon
there is blood all around me, Mom
and most of it is mine
I hear the medic say, Mom
I’ll die in a short time
I just wanted to tell you, Mom
I swear I didn't drink
it was the others, Mom
the others didn’t think
he was probably at the same party as I
the only difference is, he drank
and I will die
why do people drink, Mom?
It can ruin your whole life
I'm feeling sharp pains now
pains just like a knife
the guy who hit me is walking, Mom
and I don't think it's fair
I'm lying here dying
and all he can do is stare
tell my brother not to cry, Mom
tell Daddy to be brave
and when I go to heaven, Mom
put “Daddy’s Girl” on my grave
someone should have told him, Mom
not to drink and drive
if only they had told him, Mom
I would still be alive
my breath is getting shorter, Mom
I'm becoming very scared
please don't cry for me, Mom
when I needed you,
you were always there
I have one last question, Mom
before I say good bye
I didn't drink and drive
so why am I the one to die?

the loss of life

when i feel lonely an d blue
i cry my heart thinking of you
why did you leave me to remain on this earth
i cant maintain my life, or clean up the dirt
i cant fix the strife between those that i love
cant seem to hold on to those that i endear to my heart
why cant they realize that i am trying to do my part
i am not perfect or malicious or hard
,my heart breaks that i cant change the odds
seems history repeats itself unfortunately twofold
how can i carry all that i value and hold
the life is so short and we should treasure it with all our might
not enforce bitterness, manipulation and strife
make our life peaceful , with harmony and love
accept what you have and not change a thing
for life is worth living if you forget all the painful things
so wish i can get some omen to tell me whats right
to uplift my spirits to carry on my life
pleasures and peace come when yu are happy
you are blessed,
so never discount the little unrest
but make it turn upward instead of in turmoil
for life is worth living so extend the positivity
eliminate the negativity
value the significant and embellish it with love/happiness

About this poem:
yu need motivationt o carry on. and when those that ar e close to you give you a hard time, you r purpose and worthiness is unsuppported an d ignored and downgraded. so u need some way to express these feelings if not sometimes clearly bu t the hint is there and the feeings are there the difference is to find waht is worth saving and waht is worth leaving.
