In Australia too Medicare, Universal Healthcare, was transformative. Implemented by Labour of course and attempted to be rescinded by Conservatives, but together with our social welfare it remains, as in Canada, NZ, UK something which makes life here so much better and fairer.
@marko The two characters on the police car are gong'an meaning public security. There is nothing sinister about it, it is a police car. The white and blue sedans are very common and the blue letters gong'an likewise are distinctive unmistakable identifiers. jing'cha is the dictionary translation of police, but the police force is gonganju - police department.
@fourcheeses I am an old guy, I come from 50 years of technology, I love maths and in retirement I give back by teaching and only want to see my students laugh and love the learning. Come on then, I'll teach you Python online! Maybe I can even teach you basic Chinese Latin French or German - maybe not since I see you speak German at my level at least. 80 years forgotten is surely forgivable.
@fourfoulcheeses 6 words again (give or take a few) - in Fact I am a maths and computer science and medical informatics SPECIALIST. as before you lost me before you you could even get to the zipper. I won't read the rubbish. Try challenging me.
Interesting to put this in parallel with the so-called SMARTEST, and then other classification. Where I wonder does the other younger Bush rank? I always thought Carter was hard done by historically.
loulou yes, as I read it, but injustice is being worn away little by little. As it should be. Occasionally there are ebb tides as it seems when you put all today's world leaders side by side, but a swell of thinking people might one day turn back the tide. Nothing Canute-like though.
@palmfrond I am working through the fallacious argument techniques with my ESL students now, going through Ad Hominem for example. I see you use the Begging the question and Argumentum Tu Quoque technique Fargo, this blog is based on an opinion ... (but I asked about freedom of speech boundaries) it's so simple even i understand it. what's wrong with you people?
Asserting I am stupid if I do not agree with you fits the bill, but persuades only the simple-minded because you say it with conviction. I will try to remember not to expect an answer to a fair question in future. But why not try to keep some intelligence in the discussion?
@Palmfrond and does your concept of 'freedom of speech' run to say ... wikileaks and Julian Assange? Alright for some perhaps, but not for others? Where is your line in the sand when it comes to 'freedom of the press' for example?
Waters of March - Susannah McCorkle does a reasonable job alternating in English and Portuguese lyrics. This brilliant poem is just a list, a list of mundane things we encounter in life
Well there you are, under prompting and prodding you assembled some sentences syntactically and grammatically correct. But when you put them all together, they had nothing to do with Hong Kong or Bernie Sanders. There was a fair degree of nonsensical randomness or Chaos thrown in, and perhaps that's the purpose. But you didn't actually say anything moot. Certainly nothing relevant. Try harder, find a point and make it and argue it. Progress made but more needed.
For me a song in another language altogether moves me profoundly - a Portuguese poem, a simple list... ''Águas de março'', por Elis Regina
In my mind's eye I speak perfect Portuguese, play guitar and sing perfectly, then laugh for the pure joy of the singing as poor dead Regina does in this rendition
Águas de Março, de Tom Jobim, imortalizada pela genial Elis! P&B Programa Ensaio, TV Cultura
É pau, é pedra, é o fim do caminho É um resto de toco, é um pouco sozinho É um caco de vidro, é a vida, é o sol É a noite, é a morte, é um laço, é o anzol É peroba do campo, é o nó da madeira Caingá, candeia, é o Matita Pereira ...
So is Trump responsible for the global growth in respect for the American Way? Respect? Who cares, might is right, right? Growing respect, or growing contempt? Who cares? Well who does indeed care?
You were thinking, were you? Really? Apart from a regurgitated list which single one of these did you actually give a passing thought to, perhaps a chortle. Pray tell? Why not say something expressing your own ideas as opposed to listing others' so there is something to discuss... I don't believe you were thinking at all.
RE: 40 years ago today - The 'Miracle On Ice'
So will these two days also be celebrated?
