Father mourns firefighter from Hawaii killed near Yosemite National Park

HONOLULU (KHON2) - A firefighter who was originally from Hilo has died while fighting a massive fire near Yosemite National Park in California.

The National Park Service says Brian Hughes was killed Sunday morning.  He was captain of the Arrowhead Interagency Hotshots.

Hughes was working in an area with a large amount of dead trees when he was struck by a tree. He was treated on scene, but passed away before he could be transported to a hospital.

"They were clearing brush and there was this tree that was on fire and he was cutting it down and it back fell on him. Instead of going the way it was supposed to, it went the wrong way," his father, Peter Hughes, told KHON2.

Peter Hughes says his son was a selfless guy who loved being a firefighter, because he wanted to help people and save lives.

"It was just in Brian's blood. He loved fires and loved taking risks. He was a really good surfer too," Peter Hughes said.

He graduated from Hilo High School in 2002. His father say Brian always excelled in everything that interested him. And as a teenager, he loved sports.

"He was a happy, bubbly, joking kid. He was in 16 state championships in track, soccer and cross country. He was a really good athlete," said Brian's father, Peter Hughes.

He says Brian became a firefighter shortly after graduating from high school. And it suited him because he just loved helping others.

"Oh yeah he was, he'd put anyone else above himself. He was a genuine, kind human, totally. He would go out of his way for anybody. The kind of guy he was, he was probably glad it happened to him and not one of his other guys, is how he would have looked at it," said his father.

Brian was also getting ready to settle down and get married. His fiancee is three months pregnant. The family still can't believe that he's gone.

"What would you miss about him the most?" KHON2 asked.
"Going surfing with him," said Peter Hughes.
"Where did you used to go surf?" KHON2 asked.
"Honolii. We surfed the whole island. We went everywhere on the Big Island," he said.

His father was also looking forward to seeing him and his fiancee. They were planning to fly back to Hilo to celebrate Brian's birthday with the family.

"He was coming back on Tuesday and his birthday was on Wednesday. It would have been one of his very first birthdays that he didn't spend on a fire," said his father.

Brian would have turned 34 on Wednesday. His parents left Hilo Monday to go to California. He also leaves behind a sister who lives on the mainland.

Brian Hughes had been with the Arrowhead Interagency Hotshots for four years.

RE: You're a plane crash survivor in snowy mountains, would you eat the dead to stay alive?

It's not uncommon for people lost at sea to survive for months, if they're alone...

The average time it takes for men and women to begin eating eachother, when they're lost at sea in a lifeboat with other people...

3 days.

...and if nobody died during those three days, they begin drawing straws, or playing: Rock, Paper, and Scissors.

RE: You're a plane crash survivor in snowy mountains, would you eat the dead to stay alive?

"Ethyl is... cool in bed.

She oughta be... cause Ethyl's dead!

Makin' love every night, by the refrigerator light...

Cold, Ethyl, Cold, Cold Ethyl!

Cold, Ethyl, Cold, Cold Ethyl!"

Alice Cooper

RE: You're a plane crash survivor in snowy mountains, would you eat the dead to stay alive?

You're right.

With the exception of me, Cold Ethyl, er... I mean Molly, would be the most likely to survive.

I always carry a compass when I fly, with the plan of swimming to California or Hawaii if the plane goes down; and I used to always carry a Swiss Army knife on planes.

I think it's wrong that TSA agents try to leave us helpless if the plane crashes!

Now, I still carry an exacto blade on the inside of my belt buckle, and the pieces of spring steel that fall of of street cleaners make a nice survival blades!
Those fit in a straight Bic ink pen.

You can leave a small bit out of the hole in the pen for precision cutting; or remove it from the pen to get a 3" blade with a full tang handle.

When I lived over 4 1/2 years without using money, those pieces of spring steel were the only blade I carried; and they hold a nice blade.

RE: You're a plane crash survivor in snowy mountains, would you eat the dead to stay alive?

Cold Ethyl!

RE: You're a plane crash survivor in snowy mountains, would you eat the dead to stay alive?

Do we have to wait till we're in a plane crash, or on a snowy mountain?

Brilliant business men, don't file for bankruptcy, over, and over, and over again.

Brilliant business men pay their employees.

And a brilliant business man, who loves America and Americans... wouldn't talk bad about people who make products in Mexico, when he's been president for over a year, and still hasn't moved any of his factories to America.

A brilliant business man could afford to hire Americans, and pay them.

RE: Trump economy.....vs. that of affirmative action Obama's...

Nope.

Your claim Trump doesn't favor illegal immigrants, only proves you have an opinion.

I did a Google search on...

"Trump hired illegal aliens." ...to prove you're opinion is wrong; and look what came up in the first page!

Trump hired illegal immigrants, over Americans, in America.

Trump hires immigrants over Americans, whenever he can; and Trump is making softer laws for people who'd rather hire immigrants over Americans!

Trump tower was built by illegal immigrants! but, he still went bankrupt, and ripped off the American's who also helped build it; which left their homes open to foreclosure, a perfect storm against American workers; but, not so bad, for a real estate developer.

And, you can't prove me wrong, no matter how far you go.

How typical.

You don't care about Harley Davidson, our infrastructure, all the things he manufactures in China, or all the farmers who don't grow gmo soybeans; as long as he helps you a little bit...

But, helping you a little bit, while raising 25% tariffs on the rest of U.S.; is the way he bankrupted his own businesses so many times: and the way he'll bankrupt America.

Trump's the lefty, Russian sycophant! and he just ran for President as a Republican; because they're so stupid, they support anyone who they think is as stupid as them.

RE: Favorite candy bar

How is it possible for Autospell to allow me to write, "guy" two times in a few sentences, in my last post; but change the middle time I tried to write "guy" to, "git;" but then change "git" to "G it?" and change "G it" to "got" when I tried to write "git" and "G it" in this post?

RE: Favorite candy bar

I took $50 worth of candy bars and cigarettes to a Rainbow Gathering in 1980; to trade in the trading circle...

A guy was trying to buy my last Snickers bar for $5; but I wouldn't do it.

He said, "What do you want for it?!?"

I said, Drugs...

He said, "I have hash! will that work?

I said, Yeah...

He said, "I'll be right back," and walked away.

Then another git asked me, "Will you take a Swiss Army knife for it?"

I did, and he said, "That other guy wouldn't take the knife, for hash;" and he ran off after the first guy.

At different times I've sold and traded candy bars; and Snickers always goes for the most money, or the highest trade value.

I like eating Snickers too; but, whether I'm eating them, or I'm wheeling and dealing them, Snickers is my all time favorite candy bar.

Over 1/2 of the description she gave of herself, is about her personality...

She began by discussing her philosophy of life; and she used 21 words to make her personality known, even describing herself as "serious;" and "looking for a husband."

She also used 21 words talking about what we can see with our eyes; but 2 of those words were talking about her son's...

She only used 19 words to describe her looks.

And 17 words on contacting her...
