I always respond to those and thank them for their message and the effort put in it. Then explain why I don't wish to continue writing and wish them the best. Sometimes we write a little more just because it's extra pleasant to communicate with someone who can be bothered. They also appreciate it.
Often, in my own threads, I don't respond to people who post a response to someone else although sometimes I do respond to them. Unless it's an obvious wind up (hidden as a response to someone else). In which case if it's funny I might. Else I just ignore since it wasn't addressed to me ...
Off topic are often the funniest and most entertaining exchanges. I like them.

You mean that reading the profile and writing a sentence of something you have in common is too much effort?
I find being asked how I am by a total stranger a waste of time. It implies you expect someone you don't to give you emotional personal information or worse still that the expected answer is "ok" and so what's the point in asking?
The thing is when you meet someone in person there is "interaction" whether consciously or not. there's body language, there's smell, there's energy. And so engaging by saying hi would either elicit a smile or a their back being turned on you. Body language!! But online we are minus the body language so just a wee bit more effort required in my opinion ...
'Hello how're you doing?' Does not constitute an engaging fitst message to a woman on a dating site! Please! Get creative! Ask a question about her profile or something else. But give her a reason to answer the message other than telling you how she is which she won't to a total stranger. Unless she replies 'Fine. You?' Then what will talk about next the weather? Or what time you had lunch?
Give yourself a chance to be replied to. Send a message that shows you read her profile. Mention somerhing you have in commun may be
I don't have that many electric items and often have the "mechanical equivalent so as not to rely solely on electricity. I do own an electric iron but only use it when I need it for my arty stuff. I also have a non electric iron ... Apart from that, I got gifted a couple of electric oil radiators I use when it gets really cold to take the chill off my bedroom or the bathroom (a few times a year) but mostly I heat the house up with a wood burning stove which has a top oven so I can also cook in it.
In the kitchen I have an electric blender/liquidizer (also the mechanical equivalent), a toaster, a mechanical coffee grinder (the electric one I only use for spices that need grinding really fine), an electric spiraliser which I wish I had not bought as I much prefer my friend's hand held one and my fridge-freezer.
Those, plus my electric sewing machine, washing machine, a few lamps dotted around the house and my small laptop and that's me for electric items.
Have no idea what is causing your heartburn but if you have bicarbonate of soda and a lemon together they're the old days "alka-seltzer" ... Put the juice of half a lemon in a tall glass. Fill to half with water. stir in a teaspoonful of bicarbonate, Be quick to drink while it's fizzing like mad trying to foam over the edge of the glass. It's super alkalizing and combats the acidity that causes acid reflux and heartburn ...
May be also passenger plane pilots, coach drivers, train drivers etc... where the slightest error can take the lives of many people ... huge responsibility ...
They started charging crazy prices for electricity here too. People's bills have trebled!!
Sometimes surprises can be great if only "small" ... like when I fitted the new light bulbs in the bathroom and dining room and when I turned them on it was like the sun had just burst into the rooms!!! Hadn't realised how dreary the old bulbs were!!
