Young kids nowadays

can identify any number of corporate logos

cannot identify leaves from trees in their own garden

Of course their future progress will depend more on knowing where to go to buy what, than on knowing an oak leaf from a maple one dunno

I horrified a pupil today by saying milk came from cows. Ew, she said, no, it comes from bottles. Yersssssssss but ...

Anyone here ever milked a cow, even once
Lifted a hen to take an egg from her nest
Dug up potatoes
Said boo to a goose with its wings out and neck outstretched as it rushed up hissing rolling on the floor laughing

I know lots and lots of us have groomed horses hug

Molly, have a heart, most of them are so young I have a toy monkey on my shoulder when I'm teaching laugh

We don't know what we don't know - nonsense, most of us know everything and have nothing left to learn ever from anyone scold

‘There are known knowns. There are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we now know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we do not know we don't know.’

Back when I was in Grade school and spent some time with my older sister and her husband on their farm I learned how to feed the beef cattle and hogs for pork

I don't recall of whether or not there were chickens to fetch eggs from.
And I suspect there are quite a lot of them

laugh

Why, just one - there are at least 20 species of insects in your garden which have never been identified by science - in some areas that can go as high as 400 species. Okay they aren't important with a capital I - but they are still waiting to be identified and maybe one will be ... nothing exists for no reason. Evolution isn't wasteful, although it is occasionally very eccentric laugh
Bear, then my guess is you never did fetch eggs laugh reaching under a broody hen is one of the experiences my hand can't forget, no matter how hard I try

Did your kids also spend time on the farm?
Elegsbiff While we had lived on my sis in laws ranch both my sons did work on that particular ranch as ranch hands. There were the usual chores that ranch hands normally had to do during that time.
Biff - you're absolutely right - the whining could probably create enough energy to power the entire farm. lol.

Yes, the farmers would definitely blanch at the idea of having to babysit kids that didn't want to help. I know I would.
No but then I don't see why we need to....I have also never programmed a computer or built one of any of the other high tech things that make the world go round today....I don't see how either contribute or not to the person I am.....dunno
Bear - not an easy life! Ranch life sounds straight out of an American movie, so much more glamorous than a farm or smallholding, but guessing bottom line they are both hard work,
I often hear the parent of today saying , this is a different era , hence the reason they are lacking in discipline and so forth .
Good morning and happy new year, Luke cheers

I bet you hope you don't get any stomach problems whilst out in the bush though laugh
Biff, I'd go and live with Ek in SA if it came to that. She knows how to survive dancing
Annlee, yeah - not that I have any hankering at all to live a hundred or more years ago when times were tougher, but - whole new world! laugh
Molly, yeah, Ek would become our guru laugh

There are a few on here who are largely self-sufficient - Ken is another - and a few more who could adapt in a heartbeat because they are almost there already, just a few new skills to add to their repertoire. Lots of orchids, though laugh

You're one who grows stuff and cooks from scratch, Eks would probably welcome you laugh
@ Molly,
And the very same to you with a bonus.

To tell the truth, I was casavac'd from deep within Angola at one time with the prognosis of Malaria. It turned out to be food poisoning which could have been cured on the spot with Chamberlainsrolling on the floor laughing

Wish you well.bouquet
Sorry Biff, this gonna be off topic here...

Lukeon applause Do you have any natural remedy for malaria?
@ Mimi,
Wish I could advise you with a clear cut answer there but I can't sorry.

What I do know is that a friend of mine that had it spoke highly of Aloe and cannabis. He has however passed on so I can't confirm if it really helped. (He died as a result of a car accident. Not malaria btw. laugh )

All the best to you for 2019bouquet
I have dug up lots of potatoes, gutted tons and tons of fish, caught the fish and had it frying in the pan 20 minutes later, never shot anything though.
Hi Ele,
Twas similar to this but the liquid was a nearly 'neon' orange color.

Sorry I can't find the originalblues

Track, wow, impressive CV! I wouldn't know where to start gutting a fish, I've heard wives don't like doing it so guess it can be a messy business? but fresh-caught fish has to taste pretty good. So come the apocalypse, got you down as being in charge of fish and chips.

Luke - that was vivid. I suddenly actually tasted it again wow and that's a memory that goes back to when Noah was a lad. Also reminded me my mother went through a stage of thinking every growing child needed cod's liver oil, just because her mother had insisted on her having it.

That doesn't taste nice either.
pK first one to agree to the goose laugh I went with sheer bribery and corruption, always carried a handful of mixed grain in my pocket so although they rushed me they were excited not hostile uh oh

one comment said earlier we try to protect our kids from the less fun things of life. Huh. Don't remember anyone ever telling me I didn't need to go to the dentist, or have my jabs mumbling
Track it sounds ambrosial, I'm surprised you're not out there breaking a hole in the ice for some winter fishing. Must spoil you for the taste of stale fish completely -
I can definitely notice when the fish has been frozen for a while. Just not the same (though still pretty good lol).

The ultimate meal is some home grown veggies, fresh cod, and a local wild berry pudding.
You have to be careful with those wild berries, Track, they can be dangerous if you don't handle them with respect.
Aww, Biff, those gooses can be very pesky laugh
There was a rooster who attacked anything that moves (well, eggs were plentiful), the bloody thing was literally flying across the yard the moment I showed up...
I must admit it became unbearable and he had to go but his end was pretty tasty... giggle
Young kids nowadays are great; their parents are the problem.

this generations achievers are better than previous generations and they have more initiative: They enjoy life.

pK that rooster asked for it laugh one goose we had picked on the (much bigger) dog constantly but made the mistake of trapping her in a corner. He was having a fine old time tormenting her until she decided gentle was a mug's game and turned on him.

He tasted pretty good too giggle
Elle I'm not worried about these kids not actually aware of so many things like where eggs come from. The truth us, if two thirds of the world live in poverty then there are more of them who know where and how they are made. Although it's expected that these urban raised kids must learn those basic knowledge, it's not of importance now as Mr. Google can practically answer all their curiously motivated questions.

Anyways. Just wanted to say hi.wave
Oh i see well you know we are different from our parents and we aren't bad ha ha well sometimes i am ha ha
Geeez,,,, im starting to think we could be relatedrolling on the floor laughing
