Supermoon...

Oh, say it ain't so. TWO full moons in the same month! That rarely happens and this month is special. Starting tonight, the moon will be closest to earth making it appear brighter in the night time sky. If you follow events, people usually get irritated during a full moon. Police get record numbers of calls and emergency rooms are usually very busy.

So hang tight and watch the evening sky... it's a supermoon!

Some great moon photos coming out of Australia over the last couple of weeks Chat, i gota say the moon does look bigger than normal this full moon round..
Given the lunar period is about 29.53 days, the chance of two full moons in a 31 day month is approx 1.47/31 or about 1/21 (full moon on the first day of the month). In fact in China today, being the day of full moon, it is Aug 1st, so we can increase the odds perhaps to 2.47/31 or about 1/13 somewhere in the world where it wasx 31-July. There are seven 31-day months in a year so once in every 2-3 years is about right. They say it happens twice in August, so it must also have happened twice in July in another part of the earth.

Rob, that's awesome... Thanks !
There's been photos of something in the night skies close to the moon that's moving, it's said to be a third the size of the moon..
These photo's were taken from south eastern Aussie Rob, i'm sure their are some taken from somewhere in the US as well..

There's also photos of this thing during the day time from the US and Aussie, this thing is bottom side of the sun in the US and on 1 side of the sun in Aussie..
Beauty in the sky.

This is the right time to go camping, out in the wilderness, with the moon as light, having some good love making.

Ooooops, I digress. laugh
Got off to an early start here in F town..
Came home from KFC lunch to find millions of
Dollars of cops & investigators on the scene...
Word is ...perps not familiar with Larry [ landlord
And not wanted on property...fired a gunshot or 2
For effect-- no one injured...
But once again, I cannot enter the property while
Their lethargic investigation continues...
NASA has come up with story line they have found a heart beat
I think tonight's images came out a bit clearer

rob, did you rotate the photo from the previous day?
no no
The first post was taken 3-15 a.m. I was facing west in the early morning of the same day.
Those two were taken soon after the moon rose in the east, so I was facing the east not west...
What kind of camera and what lens do you have?

Great pictures...

I am thinking of getting back into photography again...

I used to enjoy it years ago..
I'm using Olympus gear, have two OMD Mark ii, one has x2 teleconverter, + 300mm pro lens + UV filter other Mk ii I have 17mm pro lens and have one Mk iii with 40.150mm pro lens that has its own built in fast auto focusing. The 300mm lens has built in x2 stabilization and the camera has to:
Moon photos taken handheld no tripod. Olympus sold most of its camera production off to company called OM.
You might find there are quite a few second hand cameras and lens on your eBay, I looked for past member here and saw a few.
Myself I purchased a Mk-ii on eBay and am happy with the camera. Takes quite lot to set up the camera for photographing birds and wild life, I use the same all the time including my moon shots, I've face detection = eye detection, only use auto focus. Check out Robin Wong cheat sheets...I set my settings in concrete only change ISO using the camera MySets. I often post photos on here in Australia Forums My Picture Took thread
following are three photos i took tonight as the moon rose over the hills.

Thanks Rob...

Your pictures of wildlife are quite good too.

I will look online for used ones...new ones are pretty expensive.

There is a doe and her fawn who graze along the lake behind me. I want to take pictures of them...all I have is the camera on my phone.

It has been many years since I dabbled in photography..in the time of film....but I did enjoy it.
One Mk-ii camera has 17mm pro lens is good for fitting macro filters onto for close up, sunsets etc, the pro lens bit is important as it means the lens is shower proof, in other words won't kill you camera if water drips into it (the camera).
If you are looking to take photos of wildlife that are not to far away, the "Olympus M.ZUIKO Digital, 40-150mm 1:28 (72m)" is weather resist lens (quite old model) but good, the 40-150mm is able to accept x2 or 1.4 teleconverter also the 300mm does to, which is well worth getting and i find the UV filters I use good Kenko ZX ll, UVL41 72mm filter are good for the 40-150mm.
Moon photos, distant shots the 300mm but it is bit heavy. I use shoulder strap/sling to carry around.

The Mk-iii camera has Stary Sky function that is pretty good with 17mm lens.
The 300mm lens is capable of taking macro type close ups as is the 40-150. Chinese sell pretty affordable macro filters to fit. Aliexpress I buy those on but your eBay probably have.

rob, another perfect photo.
We had rain and a cloud cover due the the hurricane 350 miles (560km) away, so I didn't get a chance to see the blue moon.
It emerged in this area at 9:36PM. There is a lot of high cloud cover though. It did shine through in several spots though and I did see it. I can confirm it is a moon.
professor
Two in one month makes it a Super Blue moon and for once I had a clear sky, it as beautiful.
When my daughter was born she was a preemie and had to stay in the hospital for 3 weeks. She was the only baby in the nursery. The nurses said wait till next week we have a full moon it will be packed.
Sure enough there were 12 babies in the nursery the following week.
That Blue moon played a part in that hurricanes force
BINGO... we have a winner !!

The moon affects tides, so the the storm surge was probably 10 feet above an already high tide.
