Last child in the woods

... I picked up a book an hour or so ago, and I know this book will fascinate me enough to capture me amongst it's folds. In the introduction, the author says;

" For a new generation, nature is more abstraction than reality. Increasingly, nature is something to watch, to consume, to wear-to ignore. ...

Our society is teaching young people to avoid direct experience in nature. That lesson is delivered in schools, families, even organizations devoted to the outdoors, and codified into the legal and regulatory structures in many our communities. "

I believe every one of us has entered into a conversation where we laugh at the differences between children these days and how things were in our day. We shake our head and wonder how we found such great delight in riding bikes (furiously, not just to a destination, but to push ourselves to our limits), we climbed trees, we sat and spent ages making daisy chains, we caught frogs, we dissected worms, we had snail races...

Things were very different once, with the new generation... they remain inside, they lose themselves in the worlds created by computer technicians and they keep themselves clean. We arrived home bleeding from a scrape, a scratch , bruises on our shins... Something that is different in this generation as we teach them to behave safely and not risk injury.

Before I read this book, I am curious what your childhood was like and ... where you see your own children's experiences are leading.

And We have spent thousands of years perfecting interior-decorating... laugh

Nice pictures ...bouquet
Thank you, Boban.

So do you think the children remain inside because that's where the electrical outlets are?
Thank you for sharing, Welela. I recall playing outside until it went dark... and then my mother would yell at me. The good thing was that there were four of us to focus on yelling at...so we took turns. The boys usually were worse than me, so they were yelled at more often. grin
Oh I remember my parents playing music on the record player, but you weren't allowed to jump around to it, because it made the record skip... and usually made my father very angry.

I do remember times being different. You knew the names of your neighbours, you stopped to talk to them, in fact... sometimes you shared lunch with them.
OH YES I REMEMBER THE RADIO GRAM WE HAD I WOULD TURN THE RECORD PLAYER ON AND PLACE A MARBLE ON IT AND SEE WHERE IT WOULD LAND AS I INCREASED THE SPEED FROM 33 TO 45 AND THEN UP TO 78 WOWWWW WATCH IT GO applause

Do you mean my boss, my co-workers, my friends? Um... No. I think it's lovely that they all care.

I used to have a man I hired as a gardener, he was here one day. I had a plasterer here the same day, when a friend dropped by to help me put a hose reel on the wall. ( Yes, I fail with boy toys , such as drills). The last one commented loudly out the front of my home, "You have an ever revolving door with men coming and going, what sort of place do you run here". I nearly died. The plasterer said he had wondered the same thing. blushing
Thank goodness it's only you losing your mind, Mike... I had wondered where it was coming from. laugh

Abagail,
When I was a child, I used to listen to by parents and
grand parents Tell tales of older wiser and better days.
Then I discovered the word Romanticized laugh

I myself think the world has become a sterile Place, and some times I expect my child's Doctor to write a prescription saying my son is allergic to life.roll eyes
But am I just Romanticizing dunno

However I'm hitting the sea for a swim. Nice Blog wave
Thank you, Non.

So let me guess, your parents and grandparents walked ten miles to school in the snow... uphill...without shoes...???

I do think we are making it too sterile for children... I think there's a time in our life where we eat dirt, bleed and all with wild aplomb.

Enjoy your swim.
YES NON THATS TRUE AND NO IT WAS DIFFERENT THEN
WOW I JUST WENT OUTSIDE BEEN BUSY INSIDE WENT OUT LET AIR INTO CAR AS SUN WAS OUT SPENT YESTERDAY POLISHING IT OH MY GOD ITS ROASTING
A SWIM AT THE BEACH IS A GREAT IDEA
ABAGAIL YES THE PAST WAS SO DIFFERENT IT TRUE CHILDREN ARE WRAPPED IN COTTON WOOL AND GIVEN EVERYTHING
I OFTEN WONDERED ARE WE BUYING WHAT WE WANT FOR THEM wave
Is our generation as guilty as our predecessors... We want for our children what we didn't have ourselves. But ... was our childhood really that bad? I recall having less, never being bored and always exploring.

Thanks for washing my car, Mike.

... doh Oh wait, you didn't... it's still sitting out there unwashed!

yay
KNenagh... Isn't it interesting that we don't consider it safe for children these days, to do what we did ourselves?

You describe your walk so vividly, without the same experiences as us... what will the children of the future be like as adults?

Martha... it was a pretty wonderful time, wasn't it?
Yes Abby, It was a wonderful time indeedapplause
and you know.. until now I still have a regular communication with my friends from my childhood through the group of whatsapp, we had a reunion last year wine
Martha, I have a few friends I keep in touch with from when I was younger... It's amazing how long friendships can last. Actually one of them brought me dinner last night... I have been friends with her since I was 16, and she felt sorry for me being housebound. That's what friends do I guess. smile

Did you enjoy the re-union? Finding out what had happened to everyone?
I enjoyed the re-union, They started to make some jokes why some of us haven't married yet blushing
We started as friends since kindergarten and primary.
Ever body has changed, but the memories of wonderful childhood remain the samekiss
You look young, Martha... so you still have time to marry. hug

I am glad you had a wonderful time.
Thank you for your compliment blushing
and your encouragement; You still have time to marry I wish.... wink
I have friends that have been married for over 20 years... and others that have only been married recently... There doesn't seem to be a design or a reason, Martha. Your day will come, then I will expect an invite. grin
I will send you the invitation for sureyay

Honestly I prepared well all the things of my wedding, but I have a problem to publish the invitation because I haven't written the name of my groom wink blushing laugh rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing
Abagailwine reading a book or going to write one?... how are you?

my childhood, lots of broken stuff: arms,legs,things,grin.... my friends and I would get on our bikes after breakfast and wouldn't be seen again until lunch ....and nobody thought that was strange....that is the main difference i find from today kids...go to the beach swim, start fires, launch rocks at various moving objects (birds), you know, learning physics… but we had a great time...

Today I see my nephews/nieces and what they do now is play games and interact with internet… (the internet I can relate,…. I feel “isolated” if I can't get a 4G signal).grin
Calli... There is certainly some truth in it. They cannot cope without their mobile phones. I recall when I took my daughter to the US in 2009... She was so angry with me initially. No phone, no computer. I tend to not carry either on vacation. Nowadays she has some amazing memories of Yellowstone Park, Mt St Helens and other places... But for the whole time, she remained angry that I 'stole' her devices.
I believe Mark Twain´s would "normal"....grin
Mark Twain went out and discovered his environment... I believe you align well with him, Bogart. smile
so many places to discover, so many thing to do... oh yes, so many broken arms alsogrin
I asked someone recently if they had any scars, and they honestly answered , "Just one". I was astounded. I perhaps have too many, but then they are signs of the times.

So, what about your, Bogart... do you have any?
yes, i do...nothing major .. one in my leg (still there after 40 years - a major cut from rock ),and a few more, but nothing explicit
yes, i do...nothing major .. one in my leg (still there after 40 years - a major cut from rock ),and a few more, but nothing explicit
I have one on my leg from a swimming accident as a teenager, another on my hand from a broken bottle, the other hand a stab wound... and the list goes on. Life certainly was interesting.

These days, I play too carefully. Although, I did cut myself rather badly on rocks in Thailand. I laughed about it at the time, because I had to explore them... and then I returned to the boat bleeding, much to the horror of my friends. Although, the worst of it was I broke my toe when I walked into a rock , when I was out swimming. grin But seriously, I am slowing down.
i am not slowing down...last year broke my shoulder....
Dare I ask? Let me guess, you were tied up by the natives and as you fought gallantly against the ropes, you damaged your shoulder... .
nop, from skydiving... grin sometimes "things" happens
Why DO people jump out of perfectly good aircraft?
so, we can jump from bad planes... and control fears
