Welcome to Gippsland

I grew up in the country, and cannot imagine living in a city. I may one day, with my career, be forced to live in the city, but my heart will always remain in the country.

I believe in exploring the world around you, enjoying what you have, because who knows what will be there tomorrow?!?

We all remember places in our childhood that have been replaced with housing , with commercial sites... and we accept that it's inevitable.

But occasionally I need to get away from the town I live in, to explore the world around me. For me, these photos simply show you part of what is my backyard. This is Walhalla. The photos I am sharing are from a day I took my daughter on a driving lesson. I chose this location because the road there is windy and therefore dangerous. What better way to learn to drive!?!

But the world is a big place, this is only a small part of it... I am not sure I will ever be able to explore enough, but I am willing to try.

YES SO TRUE ABAGAIL EXPLORATION IS WONDERFUL wave
WERE YOU TRYING FRIGHTEN HERE AWAY FROM DRIVING HAHA
No, Mike... I figured that was the best place for her to learn. So we drove to Walhalla to have lunch together. It's a beautiful drive usually, that is if you aren't praying for your life. grin
I know the feeling of wanting to see things in the neighborhood as well as the big world. I'm do know my neighborhood very good. You can see this on my Facebook page. I have a lot of photos from my neighborhood and I still love to be outside and see some more. I live near a big forest, my place is surrounded by hills with big forests and down in the wally there is a big lake. I am surrounded by beautiful nature and I love the place I live in. Would not trade it for any other place in the world, but would really love to see more of the world.

A look down from the hills I live by. Thank you to a friend who took this wonderful pictures.teddybear
Beautiful photos, Welela. I am afraid my photos are from 2010. It's been awhile since I went up there for a day. I really must do it again... I just need a travel companion. Would you like to join me?
Oh, Abagail, I wish I could go with you up there. Your photos are very good and I would really love to see it in real life. Thank you for suggesting this, even though I can not happen.teddybear
Welela, I truly have no idea what to do with a camera, but at least I have photos to remind me of what I have done, where I have been over the years.

I am sure you would love the local area here, Welela. bouquet
Thank you Abagail, yes I too think I would have love the area surrounding you. It sure looks like a great place and your photos are good. You have nothing to complain about, we can all see what you are taking the photo of. And that's the main reason for taking photos. Do you have widow maker tress around? I remember reading about those in a book from Australia and found it very scary... the fact that you can walk under this tree and get hit. Are they for real? laugh teddybear
River Red Gum? I used to play and swim under them, Welela... It's the same as being struck by lightening. Rare. You are more likely to be bitten by a poisonous snake. laugh
My local village, yes built on top of caves confused laugh rolling on the floor laughing

Wow , Z... Can you explore the caves?

Oh and how safe is that for the residents?
Abagail, I expect you could although most don't as they tend to make a good home for wild boar uh oh the whole area is riddled with caves & until recently they were often lived in.

That really is incredible, Z... Fascinating.

Why would they have stopped living in them? I assume it's the same as us having underground residences in Central Australia... to beat the heat?
There's an area near here where they still do, it's inland where it's hotter in summer & cooler in winter so a cave is more desirable.
Some local caves are big enough to house a full orchestra & the audience.

This has got to be a tourist destination , Z.

I had a friend ask me to come to Spain with him last year, I considered it...but he had just broken up with another friend and I didn't want to get involved in the rift between them.
rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing Thank you Abagail for clearing this up for me. I thought it was weird to have such a tree in your forest, so bet the book was not telling things right. To me it sounded like it could happen at anytime, if you ride by one. I've just worked out. I had to bottles of water and used them as weight to help strengthen my muscles in my arms... I have very little strength in my arms so it is needed.. I used Maroon5's music. rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing
Wow Z.man that's something... but can you tell me what a boar is? Please, I feel lost... the caves looks very interesting and I bet they are chill in the summer down there. Thank you...teddybear
Well it can happen, Welela... and the tree is known as a widow maker, but it's not as prevalent as you think. We aren't randomly attacked by trees. laugh

I can help here... a boar is a wild pig. We have them in Australia too.
Abagail, this whole area is a tourist destination, for 2010 Spain attracted 53 million tourists & quite a few of those would have come to Andalucia, the Alhambra Palace is quite near here, that's a world heritage site & Spain's biggest tourist attraction.

It's beautiful, Z... I can see why the tourists flock there. My Aunt and Uncle have been several times. I have never had that on my list of places to go, and now I can see perhaps that I have been naïve.
Welela, as Abagail says the Boar is a wild pig, they can be quite large & have big tusks, although they don't normally attack humans if you corner them, especially if they have young, you're going to come off worse uh oh wow laugh
Abagail, I'm working on a video at the moment that I'll post as a blog, that'll give you some idea of what it's like round here. wine
Thank you, Z... although I have already mapped out my next trip away... it's always nice to have incentive for another one. wine
Abagail, it's been around a long time & not going anywhere laugh thumbs up
I love the scenery in the village

Abagail, Welela, Zman, Ummka and Martha.

Thats some great photos thumbs up great to see new places.

Abagail, was their a movie made in your town. It seems familiar.
Ummka...That photograph is beautiful. Where is it taken?
Non, there is a movie called Walhalla---Walhalla is a 1995 Belgian and Dutch thriller film directed by Eddy Terstall.

Not that I am aware of for the local town.

I like exploring the world, but i need my "nature" time...view from my "refuge"

I know you despise personal questions, Bogart...but is that you?

You certainly live an area with wide open spaces? I know very little about Portugal. hmmmm... Between yourself and Z, I am learning about places I never considered visiting.
this is my weekend "retreat".. a small farm i have, and do enjoy spending time there..my normal space is in a 10th floor
with my 2 "girls"

I can see why you like it. IF I ever have to go and work in Melbourne, I may keep my home here... I believe I will need somewhere to retreat to. I have certainly found it a haven this year working out of Melbourne every week.

Your black and white dog reminds me of one I had when I was growing up. This will sound entirely strange, but I felt as though I should reach out and pat her.
the black and white, i found her on a road with a broken leg..
I wonder why her owner never came looking for her. She looks quite happy here with her friend.
she is fearless...
Fearless? She just looks gorgeous to me...She reminds me so much of that dog I had when I was growing up.

There was a fort in the local playground, with a ladder angled on the side of it. I would pretend I was stuck up there and this dog would climb up to get me, when she got there, she was shaking ... but she always came for me.
