Future of humanity

"World leaders have reacted with anger after North Korea carried out its fifth and reportedly biggest nuclear test."

So does this mean that any country now can test nuclear weapons without regard to our environment ? More importantly how will it impact humanities' future? Anyone?

Which country is next? I'm sure if Korea can do this, the rest of the world can, right?

Non,

When is the last time America set off a nuclear explosion? You need to get your facts straight! So you think that nut case, Kim Jong-un, is doing the world a favor? This is called "saber rattling"!

None of this stuff ever gets resolved!
OK Jim.

"When is the last time America set off a nuclear explosion?"
The fact that America ever let one off is the problem .

I never referred to a time frame, So you get your facts straight. handshake

As for that nut case Kim Jong-un. I look at him with no less disdain than I do any other power hungry megalomaniac that seeks the power of the button.
Be they American, Asian or European doh
Non,

Sounds like you have a wee temper!scold You need to get back on your meds!mumbling
Morning Lindseyjoneshug Korea is surely flexing its muscles, sabor rattling, doh The world in its current state, definitely don t need it.
I keep hoping the world powers get together and put their foot down, before the situation gets way out of hand. And it would set presidence for any other countries with nuclear arms.
I figure if those world powers were united , something would get done.
Just imagine World powers with a common cause, it could be the start of something new, confused
Non, I agree. Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Why are people still denying that America is not doing the right thing....ever, these days.

The tree of knowledge does bear bitter fruit, I guess. Better to stay in the black whole of ignorance. mumbling
No Jim,
Why do I have a temper;
Because I'm presenting a rational argument.
That leads you to making inane statements like "get back on your meds!"

The Answer to the American Dream, Meds a bible a gun and a vote for anyone that promises to take your burden of responsibility from you.

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance not convenient ignorance.
Gypsy,
Seems we are on the same page,
I was delighted to see your comment as my own went up thumbs up
'Meds, Bible, guns and a vote for anyone that promises to take your burden of responsibility from you.'

That's the most succinct definition of the Murkun Dream I've ever heard, by George!

miclee,
Was actually think abut your word "Murkun" when writing it laugh
Non I agree with your whole argument of dismantling all nukes, but like you said it's not going to happen.

The issue of putting all the burdens of military superior countries to monitor is overratwd, but so is the underrated aggression over countries like Korea, Uran, etc.

I'm not implying we don't have it but testing is my issue.
I believe when testing is done and the fuse is actually triggered then there's nothing to worry anymore because we'll all be vanished by then.
Jim I've not heard if any testing wd have done on earth. No.
Gypsy, I agree all of us are concerned about the future of humanity, the question here is not that we don't have nukes, but testing it us a preliminary steps to using them. US, is not isolated to the race but whose responsibility is it to make sure of the safety of the planet?
LJ,
Back to the old ethical dilemma,
Who watches the watchmen. ?

Quite a conundrum.
Ito, your line of thinking is the same as mine. The world to recognize that there is a lot of tension going on on the development of nuclear capability and it was the start of the Middle East chaos because of the suspicion that Hussein did in fact have a lot of nuclear capability that can trigger the world's demise.

Now the UN was created for the purpose of maintaining peace and yet it does not have a military power however, a plan has to be done about curbing these aggression.

My take.

(1945 - 1989)

Since 1963, most nuclear tests have been done underground, including those conducted by North Korea. This reduces radioactive fallout.

So. WHY would countries desire nuclear weapons?
President Bush identified Iraq, Iran and North Korea as 'The Axis Of Evil'.
How were those countries dealt with?

North Korea had nukes. The U.S. engaged in negotiations.

Iraq had no nukes. U.S. initiated 'shock and awe', a ground invasion, hanged its leader, killed upwards of a million of its people, set off ongoing civil war, left it in shambles, and destabilized the Middle East.
(Also Libya.)

Iran...It is understandable that it is actively seeking nuclear capacity.

Not sayin' it's good...but surely understandable.

"
"The price of freedom is eternal vigilance not convenient ignorance."

Exactly Non. But like you said whowatches the watchman?

Now it's important to monitor all these untoward activities to controlaggression a role that US has maintained over the years.

Kennedy abated a war that Russia initiated by planting those nukes from Cuba. Question is, what could've happened if we failed to stop it?
Development and progress is something we can't stop but doing it for man's destruction is just plain evil.

Goes back to the survival of the fittest. .sad flower

So where's the love, fun, kindness, generosity have gone to?

This is definitely a march towards destruction than peace. frustrated frustrated
Mic, I believe it can go either ways, as a deterrent or as a cause. When balance is lost and greed prevails what stops the aggression to escalate?
I guess deterrence is the best we got, eh Lindsy?

It's worked 'til now. smile

And it WILL work...until it doesn't. sad

LJ, the USA conducted 1032 nuclear tests, the last in 1992 (Google).

The USA has had Russia surrounded by land based nuclear missiles for decades, makes the Cuban missile incident look like a kindergarten party in comparison, then there are the roaming nuclear submarines. In the last few weeks it was reported the USA had to move some of nuclear missiles based in Turkey (close to Russia) due the risk of them falling into the wrong hands, therefore I feel it unwise for people in glass houses to throw stones.

Jim, I think you owe Non an apology for suggesting he's on meds for merely stating facts.

My dear lord Z, what on earth is this about? My ignorance. So why is such a big deal for this test now?

My bad. My apologies. Does it have any significant difference in the way its done?

And why the big deal now?
I know our testing in area 51 and in the Mojave desert but never was an issue before. So why the world leaders are concerned now?
LJ, every country that has nuclear weapons has done tests, mine included, the difference here is that Kim Fat-Un is a certifiable headcase, just to take one example from the last month, he sent agents out to kill all the snakes claiming them to be enemy agents doh But though everyone agrees he's got to go the Chinese are worried about a power vacuum were he to "disappear" overnight, we've all seen, Iraq, Libya & now possibly Syria what effect that can have.
LJ, from memory it was an issue at the time, and not reckoned to be a coincidence that a good many of the actors that made cowboy films in those deserts died young of cancer sad flower
Zman, makes you wonder, confused if that nutcase were t0 disappear who d replace him, confused Could there be someone worse, dunno and then again stranger things have happened, ( I d laugh, but this is no laughing matter)
Well if our judgment serves humanity right, would it be a less concerned if like you said the countries that test them are not geadcase?

What about Russia? What level of trust do we apply to make sure the world is safe? Just asking.

Z, it's said when the safety of our environment is not considered. Perhaps these testings has to be measured in terms of after effect and destruction.
Maybe out of curiosity Mic?
Mic, I once worked with a guy who'd been "volunteered" to witness one of the Pacific tests from the deck of a ship, I don't suppose he lived very long, I left the firm so don't for sure doh
Mic, the good news of all these us our level of awareness. We're no longer insulated as to the sensitivity of these activities. For me it's good because at least we know what to expect.
Z, considering the level of radiation one can get, it's disturbing to be quite in a distance without gear don't you think? sad flower
LJ, as I just mentioned to Mic I knew someone involved in a test, now that was in the 50's long after the effects were known, quite why lives were put at risk is a question for someone else.

Of course it helps if countries don't have a headcase for a leader & as I understand it tests are banned now, but there is the argument that what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

As far as Russia is concerned, if you look at the fact that every nuclear power have there missiles aimed there it's hardly surprising Putin has become a little paranoid about it, the USA went loopy when half a dozen were due to be positioned in Cuba, but the USA has virtually surrounded Russia with them, in addition the USA is now building missile defence systems close to the Russian border, how would you react to Russia putting one on Cuba dunno I gather from what I read on the news that there is a great deal of sympathy for Russia amongst the people in Europe, possibly time to think about a change of foreign policy in the States dunno not for me to say.
Just as an afterthought on nuclear weapons, they've been around for over 70 years, with each side working on better ways of delivering them, are we supposed to be that thick that it wouldn't occur to us that these weapons were in fact delivered years ago, in boxes of diplomatic post, installed in cities throughout the world and waiting to be triggered dunno now there's happy thought doh
I think it's a part of the sequence why it's called arms or nuclear race Z. Should it matter who has and not? Or must all countries have them. In which case who's to be regulated and not but more importantly who impose such control.

And come to think of it, now it would be ludicrous to think that our earth us not planted on all its corners. (Our wild imagination will now do the rest to kill us, me thinks).
Mic, what a story, what makes one volunteer is beyond me.dunno
Mic, what a story, what makes one volunteer is beyond me.dunno
Note - both Z and I put 'volunteer' in quotes, Lindsy. wink roll eyes

LJ, as Mic indicates, the "volunteers" were told who would be volunteering laugh

Mic, one would have to expect the difference being that the dust had settled rather than being airborne dunno
