mickybwoy: burgulary carries a 14 year sentence...
Minimum 5 years, that is what gives the power of arrest under that particulair statute.I tried to keep it simple,so as not to confuse people, but it would seem in your case, not simple enough.

tomcatwarne: I am sure many were relieved when they came home and were not involved. I don't think a child as young as five with a hammer tucked up his T-shirt has anger issues about the state somehow?Oh and babies were waving their teething rings in a threatening manner
Hmmm..it was in relation to one of the London areas effected. A man approached a woman and a younger woman. As he was making conversation a young boy (as mentioned) approached informing them something was kicking off and revealed to the man (he seemed to know) the hammer and the man just smiled. I could be wrong but I think most parents would say 'what are you doing with that?'. What happened after that who knows...However, this young lady's you tube message shows that children as young as five do have an opinion which should be encouraged to understand the difference between right and wrong from an early age.

So many divided opinions on this thread. All I have to say to some posters is,come and live in this country, know our people, all from many parts of the world now,and then pass judgement on the government, police etc.
Corruption is everywhere,as are people who have no desire to improve their lives, and continually blame society.j.m.o.

I just saw this on Sky TV news and hope this link with the video works for you overseas. This is the mindset of the looters (don't call them protestors or rioters). Watch the video clip.

The truth is that they won't make as much money as they think on the Black Market. This stuff will be everywhere for a while and they'll end up selling it for a song. They can't sit on it for fear of being caught with it.

As the commentator says, "They wanted what they haven't got...a voice." They feel justified in what they did, and I can understand that.
It's really no surprise that given the opportunity many people from all walks of life let alone the seriously underprivileged, will take what they can if it's offered up for free.
To use an old cliche...it's a jungle out there...dontcha know!!!

I'm a born and bred Londoner from parents who were born and bred here and I could barely understand their slang.
Almost a third of 11-year-olds are struggling to reach expected standards in reading, writing and maths, according to latest Key Stage 2 results according to the news last week.
We are bringing up kids with no social skills, no educational standards, and those yobs above can hardly string a decent sentence together.
At least there are now analysis, discussion, more awareness etc., so people who had no idea of the problems of the youth in the inner cities will know know and hopefully methods will be put in place for the long-term.
These criminals are 'lost' and whilst it is easy for us to be angry the system has to change.

Exactly...this has been a wake up call for the uk.
Many issues now have to be addressed from social decay through to policing and maintaining law and order.
But, we in the uk have to take a close look at the real reasons for this cancer eating it's way into the social fabric of 21st century Britain...perhaps even starting at the top.

I just saw this woman being interviewed. She spent time with a gang after being commissioned by the Daily Mail. At the end of the interview her main point was these looters just need a job. Hmmm I think it may be more than that, but a job with careful and strict supervision might be a start.
No jobs is the problem, and no future prospects of any, and a generation of kids in many areas of the country who have never seen their parents or relations with a job. The work ethic is non existent in their lives and why should it be when there is none to be had.

What intrigued me about the video was when they pointed to the block of flats and said, '...look at dem up vere, look at dem flats, they don't care about us...etc.'
Of course, they refused to acknowledge that people worked for those dwellings. Why should they care? They've their own problems and those people in the flats owe them nothing.

There are college places galore, and apprenticeships too. Some of these guys are failing at school so without even basic skills of reading, writing and maths, the employers won't touch them. Those of the youths with GCSEs can easily get a college place/apprenticeship.
I am concerned that Education Maintenance Allowance was stopped last year. That was hugely helpful for kids between 16 and 19 who went into further education, up to £30 per week per child paid into that child's own bank account provided they turned up daily to college and completed their work, and bonuses of £100 at the end of each term. It really helped less well-off kids and was an incentive for them to stay at college and work hard.
