Fact and Fiction are man made labels. What is fact and what is fiction depends upon your perspective. And on what you believe to be fact or fiction. Based solely on personal observation I would say the earth is fixed and unmoving while the sun stars aand moon revolve around it. Accepting scientific and theological observations, I can believe that the earth is a globe, spinning thru space revolving around the sun.
When a 'belief' is reinforced with accepted obsevation it becomes a 'fact' to an individual.
Is your mind the only place one can know something?
I know of love that is known in the heart ,not the mind, if we were honest, would there be anyway we could love anyone with just our minds, can we love with our minds ? or does it take more to cause that emotion? I knew of a native american man who though he could not explain why he knew something said- he knew a certain thing - because he knew it in his knower, now lets figure out what that means and then maybe we will know too.
Today is Orthodox Christmas (and today is January the 7th, right?) by Julian calendar ! Christianity has 2 parts: Orthodox (Russians, Serbs, Slovaks, Greeks...) and Catholic (almost all western countries). Catholics have thousands different sub-religions like Protestants, Baptists... and Orthodoxes (as catholics love to call) have only one. Well, there are small differences but the point is (let say) the same. Oooh yes, in orthodox church you cannot buy forgiveness. And orthodox has no pope (so no one can order a massacre on Friday 13th)... and in orthodox countries the will of Church was always beneath the will of rulers (tzars, kings...). Nice to know something new.
HOLY F'n Shoit! I leave here for a while and My origional post is still going strong (under a new title---thanks Gnome)
Faith is not tangible, you are correct. Neither is God. So how do you prove his existance? You can't.
My origional posting was meant to start a debate and flush out hypocrites. (religious topics always succeed in that respect)
People pray to God for things. When that particular thing happens, it's a miracle. When it doesn't, it's "Gods will." Doesn't make much sense, does it?
The Bible says that if you gather and pray for something in his name, God will give it to you. (not in those exact words) So tonight, I want everyone to pray to god at 9pm est. (so we can all be "gathered) Pray for a cure for cancer. We should have an answer on his existance by morning.
I haven't read all this thread, but it surely depends on your definition of god. If it's a personal god, such as a bearded fella who listens to your prayers and sends pressies down the chimney, then I'll say it's complete fiction, until I see sufficient evidence. What that is I can't say right now, but it had better be good and I'll be most surprised if it does happen!
If it's a naturalistic pantheistic god such as that of Einstein then I can live with that. No worship required, it's not a god as most people would understand one, in fact I think he should have just said nature as it's really a pretty vacuous and meaningless concept to me.
