About this poem:
This is the final product
this is a work in progress
a sketch
hear the music see the people
dancing swirling and feel the sound of their stomping feet
Rhythems and songs that can only happen the other side of the wake.

Tropical Depression

Big man from Little Havana's got smoke in his eyes
Looks cute in his sharkskin suit and his four-in-hand
The bay girls, they don't sing the song, they just harmonize
It's all we can do, to make them understand

Me and you
We could copyright the blues
But they'd only be our true confessions
One and all
We go up against the wall
And fall in a tropical depression.

Remember Freddy with the kinky beard, he's a Customs Man now
He's got his work cut out for him in black and white
It's big news at the Port of Miami when they bust some man now
Who's gonna tell them that there ain't no end in sight?

Me and you
We could copyright the blues
But they'd only be our true confessions
One and all
We go up against the wall
And fall in a tropical depression.

***

It'd be so nice to fly
But I can do without it
Temptation's just a pillow
I lay my head upon
But when the bay girls smile so sly,
What can I do about it?
They say, "Hey boy,
That's some attitude you got there,
Can I try it on?"

***

I got tickets for Montreal, we could leave anytime
Bay girls, they don't really sing, no, but they sound alright
Big man from Little Havana, he ain't got a dime
We're in the eye of a tropical depression tonight.

Porcelain Doll

As the moon casts its shadow on fate
This twilight dims my expectations
And as the daring sun, approaches
The mirror reveals that this is not my reflection
I've grown into someone I fear
My past must suddenly be revealed
And as I wear this cloak of shame
I realize suddenly just how I feel

I want to dive into oblivion
Want to wash my mouth of disgust
And if I had wings I'd fly
Into the times of just us

So don't let your memories fade
For mine are carved in stone
And I know your heart is as easily broken
As the face of a porcelain doll

Is it too late to be forgiven
Can I cast these daggers from my eyes
It feels that I'm headed on a path of destruction
And the only thing left to do is die
With all these tears I've formed an ocean
And was washed ashore by the tital wave
And with your fear I've been stranded
But with your love I could be saved

I want to dive into oblivion
Want to wash my mouth of disgust
And if I had wings I'd fly
Into the times of just us

So don't let your memories fade
For mine are carved in stone
And I know your heart is as easily broken
As the face of a porcelain doll

Tryin' Everything I Can

I'm gonna open all the widows, I smell the rain a comin'
Said i'm gonna open all the widows, gonna be a storm today
Yeah i'm gonna open all the windows, try to wash these blues away

I'm gonna turn on all the lights, cast out all the shadows
Yeah i'm gonna turn on all the lights, make it bright as day
Said i'm gonna turn on all the lights, try to scare these blues away

I'm tryin' everyting I can now baby, just to get over you
Ever since you walked out that door, an ran away with him
Been tryin' everything I can,an come tomorrow i'll try all over again

I'm gonna open up this bottle, swim down to the bottom
Said i'm gonna open up this bottle, don't care if it takes all day
I'm gonna open up this bottle, try to drink my blues away

I'm gonna dust off that ol' six string, sittin in the corner
Yeah i'm gonna pick up that ol' six string, see what she has to say
Said i'm gonna strum on that ol' six string, try to play my blues away

I'm tryin' everything I can now woman, just to get over you
Said i'm tryin' everything I can, just to get rid of these blues
I guess i'll keep on tryin', aint nothin' else that I can do

American Sons

Tommy was 18 when he joined the Corps
Just like his brother and his daddy before
He went and signed the papers, the day after
nine one one
Just another proud american son
Eight weeks of boot, out at Paris Island
Then off to train for the infantry
When he got the word they were going to
Afghanistan
He told his momma and daddy don't ya
worry 'bout me
Three weeks in country,on a cold and
starry night
It was the month of september when
Tommy lost his life
His Sergeant wrote a letter to his
parents,out in Abilene
He wrote,"I want to tell you about
your son"
"We were on patrol,it was 3a.m."
"When we got ambushed by twenty guns"
"The first Marine that fell,Tommy was
by his side"
"Draggin' him to safety,screaming
"Don't you die"
"He took a bullet in the shoulder,
but he kept right on fightin'"
"Runnin' back to help another fallen
Marine"
"He used his body as a shield,to pull
him to safety"
"It was the bravest thing I had ever seen"
"I want you to know that Tommy saved
two lives"
"Don't want you thinkin' that he died
in vain"
"And tho were sending him home, a
a decorated hero"
"Our hearts go out to you,for your loss
and your pain"
So say a prayer tonight for the fallen
For each and every one
Our Proud American Sons
Then say a prayer for those still
over there
Volunteers each and every one
Our Proud American Sons

Too Bad About Harry

It’s too bad about Harry
We knew it couldn’t last
He drove it way too fast
Gave it too much gas
He called it his own cherry
And rode it like a mule
Until he blew his cool
And played it like a fool
Now everyday we have to face the music
‘Cause every night we hear the same old song
We’re rockin’ in at sundown
And rolling out at dawn
It’s too bad about Harry
But the show must go on.

***

It’s too bad about Harry
But maybe for the best
‘Cause everybody guessed
He couldn’t pass the test
It’s quite a load to carry
It really takes a crew
For all that we’ve been through
We’re gonna miss him, too
But easy come and easy go is the way of things
Those who remain are who belong
He drove it like he stole it
But he’s gone, gone, gone
It’s too bad about Harry
But the show must go on.

You and Me

You are stuck in my heart
and we can go anywhere
whatever the reason you are
so stuck in my heart
like counting a million stars
for that many reasons you are

I Knew

Maybe it's intuition
But some things you just don't question
Like in your eyes
I see my future in an instant
And there it goes
I think I've found my best friend
I know that it might sound more than a little crazy
But I believe

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life

Set Me Free

I can't believe what I am seeing
Ego burned into my eyes
You say that love is in the making
All I hear is a bevy of lies
A twist of shadows hidden in truth
A host of apathy as your proof
Bring me to the slaughter house
I've begged you so many times
Taste the bitterness inside me
Still you continue to commit the crime

Can you ever forgive me
For the things you've done
A fistful of anger
To block out the sun
Blind my eyes so I can't see
Make me deaf and set me free

"It'll kill the core" I know you've said
"If one leaves the rest are dead"
Now all I hear are fake transmissions
And all I see are new acquisitions
Falling in place like a pawn on a board
Picking up parts that were already scored

Can you ever forgive me
For the things you've done
A fistful of anger
To block out the sun
Blind my eyes so I can't see
Make me deaf and set me free

No Matter How Much Whiskey I Drink

And it's another friday night on the lonely side of town.
Where they roll up the streets after the sun goes down.
I was sittin' in my favorite bar just tryin' to drink you
off my mind.
When I heard George Jones singin' a sad song and I knew,
I was waisting my time.

'Cause no matter how much whiskey I drink
While chain smokin' cigarettes
All the one night stands and big weekend plans
Haven't helped me forget you yet.

And it's another sunday mornin' wakin' up,next to a stranger.
I'm just tryin' to find my keys, and tryin' to remember her name.
But your name's the only one that's always on my mind.
And I know by tonight i'll be tryin' to drink away this pain,
lord nuthin' will change.

'Cause no matter how much whiskey I drink
While chain smokin' cigarettes
All the one night stands and big weekend plans
Haven't helped me forget you yet.

Lord knows i've tried to get over you,but then i'm back
in the heartache again.
So caught up in the denial and the lies,of this bottle
that i'm drowning in.......

And it's another monday mornin' wakin' up with a hangover
and heartache.
Tryin' to make it through the day,is the hardest thing to do.
Because at five o'clock I know,i'll be sitting at that bar.
Lost in a bottle, and hiding from the truth, but it's no use.

'Cause no matter how much whiskey I drink
While chain smokin' cigarettes
All the one night stands and big weekend plans
Haven't helped me forget you yet.
No matter how much whiskey I drink
No matter how much whiskey I drink
No matter how much whiskey I drink....
hasn't helped me forget you yet.
