Caught in a quiet avalanche, you see me as I want you to.
Though you think me near, I am secretly further away.
I nod and smile in the right places like they're not rehearsed lines.
We're both alone when we're together, and I am that with everyone.

About this poem:
It is about someone in crisis within themselves, and pretending to everyone that they are okay.

It was Dallas, Texas,
San Antone, or Idaho,
Maybe in New Mexico,
I don't know...,
Some time ago...,
I met a leather man out on the road,
Crease and fold,
Bent and old,
Had the saddest story ever told,
Chill your soul,
Cut the bone,
He said "I been on a roll,
On the road,
I been on a roll for so long,
It's so wrong...,
He said "What's left of me is cold,
Bought and sold,
Had no one to hold for so long,
It's so wrong...",
He said "No place feels like home,
No, No place feels like home...,
No place has felt like home for so long",
Saddest story ever told...,
"This path is one I chose",
On he goes,
"Up and down the oceans coast,
On a boat,
With nothing of my own,
All alone,
In Alaska where its cold,
With freezing snows,
Spent some time in Mexico,
Way down below,
But no matter where I go,
I know that everywhere I roam,
No place feels like home...,
Something's always off,
Drifter move along,
Black sheep of the fold..."
The man had the saddest story ever told.

Seems like Pain,
Pain is my only friend,
Yeah, Me and Pain are lonely old friends,
I said "Hello, How are you?, How you been?",
When Pain came and seen me again,
See She's a Pain I'm still caught up in,
A Pain I don't think ever ends,
Maybe Baby made a hole I can't mend,
When pain came to see me,
Earlier this evening,
Pain came and seen me again...

Pail of water,
Where is Jill?,
Jack got some magic beans for sale?,
Someone show me a wishing well,
What happened to the fairy tales...?,
See I remember when that
Humpty Dumpty
Was picking up pieces,
Little Bo Peep
Was chasing her sheep
And Goldilocks
Was locked up with the
Three bears sleeping,
What happened to the fairy tales
I used to believe in?
What happened to the fairy tales,
Seems nobody reads them,
They sit upon the library shelves and
Few ever see them,
And new generations have nothing to believe in,
Tell me what happened to the fairy tales...,
What happened to my fairy tale...?

A factory full of odds and ends, assembled and arranged in lines by non-mechanical beings.
Punchdrunk time cards chart their lives through typical weeks with typical tasks.
Printing the barcodes, scanning the barcoded things.
Plotting points on a graph, crunching numbers - like a cog in a machine.

It's morning and the street lights are still on.
The road is resting it's back while the cars sleep in their driveways.
Foot-free footpaths mirror the road.
Unlike them, I'm wide awake - but I share in their peace.

Walk with me in the eager night
brass bold black horse billow
taste this frontier bone stripped love
sea grave green wept willow

the dark swam down from the ceiling.. to a world all studded with stars
and she turned the key in her pickup.. and drove home like all the rest of the cars
she waited for a noise like a phone ring.. to break up
all the stories in her mind
and the lights that stalled all her journey.. made her think for a second of the blind
now I walked up the hill by the dockyard.. because I saw
her name on the screen
just then a bird flew out
of a building.. and I forgot
about the ghost in the machine
and I'm far, far.. from mean
the cafe played songs from the sixties.. and the waitress had a smile like a dream
and she wrote down her number
on my napkin.. and I forgot
about the ghost in the machine
she hot showered alone in her apartment.. hearing lovers
wreck beds through the wall
and her mom rang to say that she loved her.. and she cried when she knew she was gone
see a memory's just a memory if you let it.. and your time is like a poem in your mind
but some of us just can't write a love song.. and for some there ain't no other kind
and I'm far, far.. from mean
I lit my cigarette with the lighter she bought me.. I felt no guilt although I knew that I should
and I finished my coffee around midnight.. to the strains of "johnny b goode"
see a marriage is just a marriage
if you let it.. and a promise is made a promise by time
through the years I've learned life
is a poem.. and some of us just don't want to rhyme
and I'm far, far.. from mean

You swallow a year
And then you grow
Not very fast
And not too slow
You grow your teeth
You grow your feet
And then you become
A grown-up kid
The time flies forward
Or backward sometimes
At times too slow
Or way too fast
You wander through life
And one day recognize
How to stretch your shoulders
And spread your wings
And fly high into the sky
Into the bubble of happiness

The sun is lifting
Heavy burdens off my mind
My thoughts are drifting
Back a moment in time
Where sands are sifting
Back and forth with the tide
I am still searching
Where clues of life abides
My heart is open
Maybe for the first time
And all that I’m hoping
Watching my shadow mime
Dreams that are coming
Trying and keeping up
Letting things go
So the weight will fade away
Drift with the wind so
Off my shoulders behind me
Then I will know
How wonderful is life
The flowering blossoms
Opens up like a prize
Something so awesome
Right before my eyes
And my mood softens
Glancing into blue skies
