ttom500: Maybe being in Florida, I am closer to Cuba than you.
Cuba is more than a Socialist state, I know. It is both a dictatorship and communist. So using it as a example of socialism is not quiet fair.
But socialism is part of the Cuban experiment.
What Saberi is going thru in Iran, was done 1000s of times in Cuba. And worse. The Iranian know she is an American....so will treat her fairly well....they will even force feed her.
But in Cuba....those that fell out of regeime liking....had no America to support them. They were truely at the mercy of Castro's gov't. Mariel boat lift is an excellent example.
At first it was a very noble thing. Those wishing to leave Cuba, were free to go. I think the number was 47,000 choose to leave. Castro sees an opportunity to rid his mental institutions and prisons. Some 40,000 criminal and mentally ill made the journey as well.
We sat here in the US. Really we did not have any choice in the matter. They simply began to show up. They made this unilatrol decision in Cuba to do it.
Janey Reno, the Attroney General that forced E. Gonzales back under gun point to Cuba....is from Florida. She is very disliked here by the Cuban community. That Cuban community saw the Mariel Boat lift bring 1000s here. And that one boy could not stay? Because the DEM leadership could not face off with Castro?
When 47,000 people decide freely to leave thier homeland and all thier belongings....it says a lot.
well, the whole concept of socialism is a good one, but i must say that having a friend who is moving to vietnam the freedom and sense of community he felt there was astounding.....
we just would need to make sure that government is accountable in some way

Hell, if we dumped our m.i. & prisoners, we could afford good health insurance too.
Indyfella: Hell, if we dumped our m.i. & prisoners, we could afford good health insurance too.
Reagan did.
He didn't send any of our MI's to another country, just made them refugees within their own. Cut all funding for mental health. What do you get? Crazy homeless people.

Now Bodhi...you can do your homework better than that...weak on your behalf. :tisk tisk emoticon:
I don't have to do my research Indy, I lived through it. When Damish Hospital basically evicted its patients because their Federal funding was cut, we had a crowd of Building-babblers, Invisible-rugby players, and the ever-popular Sidewalk-Catatonic.
Don't know where you were at. Probably laughing all the way to the bank.

hey bodhi......our federal government did this aswell..... now we have alot of people who desperately need to be 'cared' for and the expense to the community in general is now greater (both monetarily, by funding their 'free-er' lifestyle, and psychiatricaly, alot more people not coping, not taking their meds properly, and well you can only imagine the consequences of that, everything ranging from petty crime, to suicides, and murders)
Obama is as bad as you wish him to be and as good as you wish him to be. The supporters will continue to support and the dis tractors will continue to dislike him. He is in a no win situation!
Relax, you have at least four more years!! (Purt neer)

The crime rate caused by those in the Mariel boat lift was atronomical.

BebeII: Thank you Conrad-Tis amazing that so many will give the government so much power in the name of compassion and fairness, when all their doing is tightening the noose around their own necks.
I've lived in Socialist situations on several occasions both in socialist countries and in communal lifestyle situations.
There are a few advantages, at first. But in the long run, in my experience, socialism always drifts towards totalitarianism, and towards an ever accelerating breakdown of the quality of life. The longer the situation continues, the less rights, and the less opportunity the individual has.

For moving to France, you're pretty smart. Share that with dude.
Paulababy20: Obviously im not an Obama fan..i dont care for socialism, high taxes, weak military and changing the fact that we are at war with terrorist killers. I just hope in 2010 and 2012 we put people back in Washington DC that know what the hell they are doing..and not on-the-job training!!!
Where's the emoticon of someone beating a dead horse ?
desmond: I agree that a waist but since you are so great a googling can you go back and tell us all how much moneny the almight GWB and Cheney waisted doing dumb stuff over the last 8 years.I been in this site for almost 3 years and have never seen anyone one really bashing the president before last summer I guess because he was your guy.
And that is what about 99% of the anti-Obama threads are about. They have the same people (both anti obama & pro obama) spouting the same rhetoric. Very rarely do you see someone come up w/ an original gripe or concern.
yes he is a great orator and what is wrong with that btw?
but i am annoyed that he and no candidate addresses my issue and a big reason they dont is that the population i care about arent voters
i am discussing the invisible america the over 1 million children that went to bed hungry tonight (these numbers are pre-recession or whatever we are calling this economy) the half million of those kids that are homeless and in a car tonight in this great country of ours
it is shameful it is a heartbreak and it is what we should be as concerned about as any hardship happening anywhere else
except the everywhere else gets all the money press and attention
thats my heart talking as an american this is a great shame for me

Being reformed, I cannot alow myself to engage those who glorify Bush ar Cheney. For Those who are reality -challenged , my hope is for once in their lives they think out of the perfectly square republican box ...............
