RE: Is wealth become a criteria to be respected in society ?

Being rich does not automatically mean those people have manners, morals or politeness, and IMO it's manners, morals and politeness that deserve respect not a bulging wallet or 10 seconds of fame on the TV.

RE: Career Women

Ah maybe you mean the OPs question doh I guess I'm tired lol, Well most western people as well as here in China, need a certain monthly income, and, sadly one income is usually well short of the monthly outgoings, so nope no choice here either wine

RE: Career Women

Hi wave All good here, hope finds you the same, Do we have a choice regarding Divorce? Nope same for me, she wanted a new life and went for it, shame he left soon afterhead banger head banger Gotta love Karmalaugh laugh

RE: Career Women

Because divorce is still against the government's wishes, so of course the divorce rate is small, but how many are in marriages that are filled with hatred rather than love? how many of my students tell me how they loth going home for the spring festival because "Mum and Dad" will be shouting and screaming the whole time.
Sure the parents are being financially responsible, but where is the love where is the affection??

RE: Career Women

China has the largest population in the world, so you do the maths.
I didn't say all the people, I said it is normal in China, am I wrong??
And I read your post the other day where you suggested that young people fall in love, then get married and the love becomes responsibility. Money has taken over everything in China sadly, young girls still seek a man who has a house, excellent job (money) and now a car, before even considering dating let alone marriage.
If you think I am wrong then visit the mainland and see what I see every day. Love is a dirty word in China!!
I do appreciate that HK is more forward thinking and romance can be found there, but in the rest of Chinadunno

RE: Career Women

There are far more that not what a western would term "successful" in Asia, It is normal for a husband and wife to go off to different cities to find work and leave the kiddies with the grandparents, the "couple" meet maybe two times a year, if you call that successful, well fine, but most couples actually like to spend time together, as a FAMILY not a few weeks a year, when all they do is argue.
China is full of loveless marriages, as money is everything, love is a rude word and responsibility has become the replacement, so very sad IMO
Thankfully my students can see this failure and vow to stop this way of life.

RE: Plans For Memorial Week-End?

Well nice to know you'll be entertaining yourself during a time when most Americans will be honouring those who died in wars, just so you could have a cabin in the woods.sad flower

RE: Eurovision Song contest

Gosh, I had no idea Australia was in EUROpe doh

RE: UK ponders dumping Europe.

Sorry but this argument doesn't hold water, the fact is the UK is a major financial contributor to the EU and gets almost nothing back in return now thanks to B.Lair. and the truth is that the EU needs the UK's market, BMW for example sell more cars in the UK than any other member country, so, they are going to stop selling just because the UK left the market? of course not, and why would the other member states stop buying from the UK? to spite them?? If Germany tried to place import duties on UK goods, BMW and all the other big manufacturers would soon be up in arms, as they would lose their best customer.
By leaving, the UK can sell to the world easily and in fact, would be allowed to open up far more lucrative contracts, that for now are forbidden.
Had we dumped sterling and joined the Euro it would be very different, but as the UK has its own monetary system, leaving the market can only bring positive effects to the country as a whole

RE: Do you support home schooling?

Absolutely, and the home schooled child is robbed of opportunities to have or build life friendships.
And what about learning about being part of a team? Home schooling often produces a selfishness that stays for life.
How can a home taught child learn about sport? Or becoming part of a team be it a sports team or class team, and how, as a team, learn how problems can be solved more efficiently by working together, using each others abilities to the best advantages?
As a teacher I can see very few advantages to home schooling but many disadvantages, most of which are detrimental to the future of that Child.

RE: Cutting 1 food could revolutionize your life

The article is utter crap, wheat is a life food, bread has been the main diet of nations since time began, it is the chemicals put into wheat products that cause problems, Just typical sensationalism by the uneducated, paid for by those who make money from selling alternatives and published by a website famous for talking BS.
Sure some people benefit from reducing wheat intake, but that's a tiny amount considering the number of people for whom wheat is their staple diet.
Here in China wheat is actually hard to find, and so for 4 years I have eaten very little, but it has made no difference to my health what so ever.

RE: Hate Speeches

Hate speeches are already censored by the fact they are illegal, so they cannot be held on a campus, or at least, not in those countries that uphold this law.

So what is the real point of this thread??dunno

RE: Middle east earthquake

Thanks Conrad, this is such a desperate area, still recovering from the massive earthquake of 2008. It's the last thing they needed. BUt the Military have great experience now in finding people still alive buried under the rubble. China news say that as this was close to the surface, they are expecting more to follow!!

RE: Middle east earthquake

There was also an earthquake in Sichuan province, China at 8am this morning, over 100 killed, maybe thousands injured and/or homeless. But who cares about China???sad flower

RE: Divorced (Marital Status)

Well it would matter to a catholic, as they cannot marry a divorced person in a church, so saying you're single is misleading to say a filipino, if in fact, you are divorced!

RE: Was Margret Thatcher good or bad for world politics

I read in the Telegraph that she requested NOT to have a state funeral, and wanted one as basic as possible. All those who are criticising her and her family should point fingers elsewhere.

RE: The Law Says That A Motorist Can't Use A Hand-Held Map

Monte I take your point and half agree, but, No one should be driving unless they know and understand all the laws pertaining to driving.
If you are in a traffic jam all the cars around you are also stationary, therefore you can switch off the engine.
Better still you can use a bluetooth system, most modern cars have them built into the radio, even here in China, my chinese made car has bluetooth phone connection with the radio, as soon as I get in the car my phone connects with it, anyone phoning me is automatically answered and when they end the call so my phone turns off. I don't touch or look at anything during the conversation.
I agree though that the officer could have just cautioned the driver rather than give him a ticket, but maybe he had already done so 3-4 times that day and decided more action was required?

RE: world war III

The winning sidedoh grin

RE: The Law Says That A Motorist Can't Use A Hand-Held Map

The law is the law, end of story!

However, is it a good or well thought out law is another question?
In my own view, someone incapable of using a radio, smoking, eating an apple or even drinking a coke while driving, should not be allowed a license anyway.None of these actions require you to take your eyes from the road for more thana fraction of a second.
Driving requires you to multitask continuously, and, with the new models that seem to drive themselves, so the skill of driving goes out the window.
That said, I also believe that using a mobile phone while driving is crass stupidity, here in China the laws are rarely invoked, even bus drivers are texting or chatting while driving 40+ people around, a phone is not the same as the above items it requires your eyes to leave the road for more than a few seconds, as does a hand help GPS, whereas a dash or windscreen mounted one allows you to glance at it and still see with peripheral vision.

I agree that the man should have been fined, he was in control of a lethal weapon that was primed and ready to kill. He should have pulled over and switched off the engine.

RE: The 'Iron Lady' has passed away.

No worries, cheers

RE: The 'Iron Lady' has passed away.

I'm not sure why my living and working in China has anything to do with my opinions as a British Subject, discussing a British Political leader who was a true leader.

My last comment was made because your comment showed you have a lack of respect for women, and, as such, refuse to even acknowledge that for Margaret Thatcher to become the British Prime Minister, was a historical first and only achieved because of her strength of character, that achievement is the inspiration to many other women. That you cannot/will not admit this fact shows your lack of respect for all women. IMO

RE: The 'Iron Lady' has passed away.

Not so, it was the Unions and bad management that started the rot of British industry, Thatcher had no chance to repair that damage so tried to make good by privatising what she could in order to preserve those industries, sadly the next government undid all her work and so the industries collapsed.
One should also not forget that within the EU she was a power horse, unrelenting and only working for the good of the UK, again the next government sold the British public down the river, with Blair signing away all our rights and abilities to get more from the EU community.
Some indeed many disagreed with her political ideas, me included to a degree, but no one can deny she was a true leader and one not repeated since. As a political leader she was and still is an inspiration to all women faced with a male dominated environment. She was not called the Iron Lady for nothing, and as will be seen next wednesday, was admired by the most influential of world leaders.
She deserves respect whatever your political leanings, shame todays politicians cannot come close to such leadership qualities!

RE: if I keep praying will God heal my relationship?

Cheers cheers

RE: if I keep praying will God heal my relationship?

I guess you need to think if you are important enough, after all, the innocent children who die needlessly were not saved, the families ripped apart by "natural" disasters were not saved, so unless you have recently paid a large donation to the Pope it is unlikely you god or anyone elses will notice you.

A far better way to overcome your sadness is to get up, and do something constructive with your life, make a positive difference in someone elses life and you will feel better inside and the misery will fade away.bouquet

RE: skype

It was good, excellent even, but now has been bought by Microsoft, so performs worse and is getting more expensive when making phone calls.
But try and see for yourself, easy to install and easy to remove if required.

RE: N Korea officially at war with the South.

Well I guess because the constitution was not written until 1954, the Korean war ended in 1953 I believe, also the constitution has been amended many times since 1954.

IT is one of the main reasons why China has refused to support the UN regarding Syria, in their words, its not our problem!!

RE: N Korea officially at war with the South.

If N. Korea attack Japan, which is within easy reach of their weapons, then your president has no choice in the matter, as America signed a declaration with Japan at the end of WWII, stating that, as Japan cannot have full military power, if ever invaded then America would protect them.

China will do nothing unless attacked, it is in their written equivalent to a constitution, not to get involved with other counties conflicts.
Besides, they would be quite happy to see Japan suffer.

RE: Does it bother you that you may all soon be replaced by robots at work ?

30 odd years ago it was suggested that in the near future we would all have an easy life, full of leisure, as robots would do all the work, including around the house, it still hasn't happened, and I think unlikely to happen any time soon.
Mankind needs to work, we have a natural desire to do something that provides for our family etc.

Far more frightening is the likelihood that a minority will control the majority via computers, Bill Gates linking all windows computers via satellite and watching you 24/7 and with the advance of technology will come organic computers, with a degree of intelligence, and worse, you cannot switch an organic computer off !!! Think about ituh oh
