Well, there are those who have that attitude and I can't speak for them. I can only speak for myself and to be honest, I do find it a little frustrating to be labled and see others labled as selfish because Iwe resist the ideals of others. I am not pointing at you when I say this but a quick look through the threads will prove my point. Heck, I'm kinda like you in a way. I would be fine with helping out the people needing assistance if I could be assured my money would not be used for other than its intended purposes. The track record our government and other really large organizations leads me to believe this isn't possible. Since this is the case, I would prefer to use my money to assist people as I see fit where I can at least have a say in how its used.
I volunteer already (Sort of) Uncle Sam gets about 24% of my total income. I think that's a lot but that's OK because I really don't mind paying my share. I don't even mind too much paying more than others in my same income bracket who receive deducions/credits for having children.
I agree with your point about a society taking care of their citizens but where do we draw the line? I know from personal experiance that opportunities and assistance programs are available. They will not make anyone wealthy in the short term but they will help people get on their feet thru education, assistance, job training/placement, etc... With few exceptions this should be the limit and then those citizens should be able help themselves.
Not a Republican but no fan of the Obama tax, spend and redistribution of the wealth economic ideals. I don't need Obama to tax me anymore than I'm already being taxed. Heck, I'm even one of the people who would benefit from the supposed tax cuts but I can see the danger in adding taxes to those who make the economy work and create jobs.
Some people believe we should provide more in the form of new taxes which in turn would create new opportunities for the disadvantaged. Any disagreement wih this philosophy makes those who disagree selfish. This is a noble stance but I would challenge those making that judgemnt to be the first to volunteer their money in the form of taxes and while their volunteering it, be sure to meet or exceed the percentage many are currently paying. I doubt this would happen as most of the people making those statements are the very people who would not see a tax increase under Obama's plan.
Maybe Forbes was right and we should just transition to a flat tax. This way we could all equally feel the sharp stab of pain in our backsides as our rich Uncle Sam begins his thrust.
I agree and will also be glad when it's over. Unfortunately, I believe we'll just transition into the Obama/McCain is so stupid type threads. Aren't politics wonderful?
Stress, the thing is, the assistance you mention is already available and to a much greater extent than it was when I was coming up.. There's the normal red tape ofcourse but the help's there.
I really think much of the problem is our lack of ability to live within our means. Earlier in this thread I believe Bob mentioned underbuying his house. I did the same thing. But a lot of folks with the keeping up with the Jones' mentality from the middle class overextended themselves along with a greater number of people from lower income classes doing the same thing. Certainly our political leadership from all parties have exaserbated this but I believe our own greed and lust for things with an "I want it now attitude" is the root cause. I know there are some good people that are suffereing because no fault of their own but I also believe a majority of these loans were bad to start with.
Stress, I grew up with the clear understanding there were no free things in this world. Wealth is not given, it is earned. While I believe there is a time to assist those less fortunate, i also believe those less fortunate have an obligation to improve themselves and live within their means. I lived from payday to payday for many years, often times I went without but I did make it. If I can then they can too.
As far as education goes, I agree. Some additional or redistribution of tax money could really help with education. I don't know what either candidate is planning to do with education and I have my doubts they really have a plan that they can economically and realistically support.
Whatever we do, we really need to get back to the basics, resist coddling these kids, provide better pay to our teachers, demand parental involvement and grade these kids accurately instead of just running them through the system. Way too many illiterate high school graduates. Finally, those special interests groups need to stay out of the school system and the fed or state governments should provide zero funds for "schools" with political and/or religeous agendas/curriculum.
You did leave off the part where a good many of that 40% are going to actually get a check every year. So no taxes and a check. What a great incentive for people to improve their own economic situation. Im sure this may throuw in a few fractions and decimals
This reminds me of a very old joke concerning the Matel toy company. Seems they were trying to and successfully developed what they called the welfare doll. You simply wound it up and it didn't work. Pretty damn simple project and so similar to the Obama economic plan that I fear legal action against him for copyright infringement.
I can imagine why no dem ever gave an answer. there isn't one unless there's a new form of math. Kinda like Jethro Bodine's Gozinta math. You know.... 2 gozinta 4, 2 times. 2 gozinta 6, 3 times, etc...
Actually it's doable if you are on an extreem diet, don't need electricty, water, etc... and can commute to work by walking. Unfortunately, when push comes to shove ya gotta eat. One solution may be to devour all those little ACORNS. That should solve two problems at once.
The Obama economic philosphy is another possible solution. He can make it where a majority don't pay any taxes and get a check every year from the minority that do.

I guess we're just fortunate to already have scale models of Chicago for the new Ken doll. I do think they may run into some problems with copyright infringement from the folks who make Mr. Potato head.
I beg to differ. I think you just need to join the "Bash a Politician Party" It'll all be good if you choose the right politician to bash. There's very little political correctness going on in these threads. I fgure what the hell. if you can't beat em, play by their rules when the mood strikes ya..
I agree but then again since both parties were involved in helping us reach this position, how can we really vote for either. It's way too easy to point fingers in both directions.
