Thanks for passing on David Mammet's name, and for the video clip....How stange you should suggest that particular film with Alec Balwin. I watched it late '09, when I was in Wisconsin staying with a writer friend of mine at the time. He'd wanted to show me a fabulous example of moviemaking/screenwriting(Odd that I should be doing this now!) What a performance by Baldwin and what a tragically sad ending in the film. I hope I can find the screenplay so that I can watch the film as I read it.
Yes, all those things...that's what makes European movies often very different from Hollywood ones...sometimes in ways that can be really disturbing, though at least it makes events believable.
Just looked at this post of mine..no idea what the first two '?'s are all about!!!. ...and it's meant to be 'lighten' not kighten...my typing is baaaad!!
yes, I like stories of a real person's life. I would love to write a screenplay based on a biography I'm reading, but firstly, that's a huge exercise in itself, converting from book to screenplay, and for a novice like me, fraught with difficulties. Secondly, it really needs to be a completely original work, so these books tend to already have a film made from it, so it would work against me.
Thanks for your good wishes. Yes, an enormous challenge, but in a peverted kind of way, look forward to it.
Yes, and to think Temple Grandin is a real person, still alive and well. What a set of accomplishments, with so much spirit in her and those who assisted in her journey. They realised her mind operated differently to most other people's, and allowed her to have her own voice.
I adore Kevin Spacey, love his performances! But then he is theatre trained, films came later.
I'm afraid my project won't be the making of the actual film. That will be for a producer to take up, wouldn't that be something!...I will be writing the screenplay itself, which never hits the shelves of any bookshop. Part of my project involves provinding a full marketing plan, pitched at producers/directors, the only ones who might ever read it, besides my university supervisor. ...But maybe one day, you might see it on the big screen(even a little screen would be great!) All I could provide you with is its title when I finish.
Sounds like a great movie to kighten our spirits? Is that something that's important for you in watching a film? What was the message for you in that film?
I don't have specific ideas yet, just possible settings. Talk about the wrong way 'round!! It's all happpened so quickly, getting formal approval by the course convener, hooking up with someone to supervise my work(I now have 2 people, one formally appointed, the other a local screenwriter who will mentor me).
The big step for me is to decide on a premise, then I can build from there.
Music is so often a huge part of the film. Do you compose the film score or involved in some other way with a film's music? It's quite a task in any case.
Thanks for the wiki link...will try and get hold of the film. As you say, budget is key.
By the way, A_B, I did find your top 10 list through opening your profile, as mentioned in above post. Thank you for the work you put into compiling it.
I have seen neither Avatar nor District 9, but will see if I can find them (ain't demonoid grand, a CS pal here introduced me to it)...Wow, 'razor sharp storytelling'- I'm sold on that alone.
Certainly, budgets needed in making the film can spell either yay or nay for a screenplay's production. I have possible settings in mind for my screen play, which would involved different parts of the globe, but hey...
I found 'Temple Grandin' to be a most powerful fil. Clare Dains was fabulous as Temple!! I didn't know it was a direct dvd release.
The film needs to be based on an original idea, and there is no teacher for this part of the course. I will have a supervisor, as the project is largely to be completed on my own, and his role will be to oversee and provide feedback as I go along. A bit daunting! The person who has agreed to be my supervisor is a travel writer, who also lectures in screenwriting(not sure if at the same institution) and used to help write for the show 'Comedy Company', so I look forward to working with him. I have another person who will mentor me locally, who is a professional screenwriter and also lectures.
What, for you, were the moral messages in each of these two films?
I found it, thanks! It's the first time I've heard anyone else mention the film 'The Fly', with Jeff Goldblum. It was years ago that I watched it. A haunting performance by Goldblum is one thing I recall.
I will read your reviews closely. Many thanks for posting these. I will try and seek out any of their associated screenplays, hopefully the final/working draft.
Hi About Blank Thank you for posting. I look forward to reading your 'top 10' posting. Is it a thread or elsewhere in a blog?
Yes, cinema is such a fascinating medium. It can transport us to all kinds of places, and evoke real emotions as if we were part of the characters' world. Very powerful!
Most of us enjoy watching movies, some of us have favourite genres, be they horror, thriller, comedy, romance,...
I'd love to bounce around some ideas with you good folk, as I have a major independent writing project to do next semester. I have chosen the screenwriting category(vs novella...). This includes either a screenplay for a feature film, a TV mini series, or sitcom.
I have chosen to write a screenplay for feature film, though the magnitude of the task hasn't quite sunk in, given it's taken me months to write and re-write, a screenplay for a short film!!!
Anyhoo, what I would love to find out from you, are what is it that does it for you in a film? The moral message?...the plot?...and/or anything else inbetween.

Of-course that could very well be the case. It happens all the time. No-one can be that special, that they can never be replaced. Well, I shouldn't say that, because for some people it might be true...generally, though, there are many wonderful people out there.
This is not a thread about LDR's, but I do know you were involved in one a couple of years back. No doubt that experience may be influencing how you feel about such relationships.
Just a little reminder...this thread is about our CS crush...menat to be a bit frivolous!
I don't think you would understand. (I know RDM does, though). One cannot help where you find love. People meet online, then materialise in real life. It's not always about romance, either. I have a pal in Texas, who I met online on a 'community building site, and in '96 stayed at his home for 10 days and was treated with total respect at all times. We are still in touch, he is like a big brother/cousin. I have even met a professional person, a psychiatrist/pain specialist, online on his clinic's website. he subsequently invited me to his clinic for 2 weeks in '99, and I stayed with him and his wife on his estate. He also paid for my return airfare.
So you see, I am an online junkie from way back. A singles site is relatively new to me, and am not dependent on online life at all for dating. In fact, I have often hidden/deleted my profile from here. It is just one part of my life. No, I pesonally don't suffer from isolation. We just happen to be along way away from places like Europe. But I have bought myself a little place in Italy, as it is my country of birth, so it will soon be my other home.
Everything can become boring, if you let it. I have yet to suffer boredom in any aspect of my life. Way too much going on, and hop on here to chill out.
