RE: Do people with high self-esteem consistently attack others in the cs forums ?

I think that some people are addicted to their own rhetoric, and if it seems reasonable to them, they assume it should to everyone else.

RE: Words you have had to google...

hey lad—I had to take a few days off ( was getting rotten headaches and the nurse in me figured out it was right after computer use—have some BluVues on that are supposed to help). Yes, there are still some words out there that stump me. I didn’t “ get” ‘exponential’, and ‘petulant’ for awhile. Always interesting territory for me..and, always a pleasure to talk with you, mi buchal..( sp.?)*

*I think that’s Gaelic for favorite companion...?hug

RE: Words you have had to google...

AMELIORATE

A professor of mine used this. There seems to be a bit of gray area as to precisely when to use it.

RE: SCIENTOLOGY - For the Rich & Vulnerable?

For the record, I’m neither acclaiming or condemning - but in all fairness as I state in my profile I do not embrace organized religion. And, to quote my late brother, “ everyone has the right to be misled”. laugh given that, I do believe that we need to be acutely aware of cult mentality. Consider many mainstream branches of Christianity- some believe that repeating certain phrases over and over “ helps”, or wearing specific amulets/ medallions/ miniature icons “helps”, etc...In short, it is all a form of pageantry, where the patrons believe that doing or saying certain things causes results...Scientology actually APPEARS to have sound baselines, such as recognizing one’s own value and purpose. It is after enticing novices ( who doesn’t want to think he or she is marvelous and wonderful?) that the administrative parameters “crowd”, but by then the novice is initiated and detaching becomes psychologically compromised. In all fairness, other cult/ cult-type organizations do this, as well. My advice? Go ahead and use your own brain cells. That’s what they’re there forprofessor

RE: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD

I SO hear you. I’ve noticed that any other than “International” forums don’t seem to have as much interest or volume...confused I’d like to see more U.K. And Ireland current threads, too. Your culture and regions are immensely fascinating, and the people very eclectic...teddybear

RE: Tomorrow is promised to none

I’ve been asked this before. I’d probably get a pack of Marleboro ( how I miss my cigarettes at times), some vodka and Clamato, put on Irish ballads, and kick back...do we ever really know how we’d spend our last day?

RE: What is your best attribute ?

Hey, are you a model? You have got “ the look”. Finding a person who is really good looking AND genuinely nice is rare. YOU are BOTH!*

RE: Eddie Van Halen dead at 65 from cancer

not sure how the law is now, but at that time, at least in Oregon, a company could require overtime with a two- hour notice. ( if you worked day shift and were scheduled off at 2:30, they had until 12:30 to tell you. And, like many other unfair laws, a previous promise doesn’t count—the employer holds all the cards.) I liked mikeys comment—she was looking for work when she found that one. I’m not sure if you’re aware, but in the U.S. there are hundreds of rules and laws that are ignored. For instance, it’s illegal to terminate an employee because of age or tenure. They do it ALL THE TIME. handshake

RE: Favourite quote

two of my very favorites—uh, make that three—-

1. If you do not learn economy in the good times you will surely learn it it the lean times.
2. Today I bent the truth to be kind, and I have no regret, for I am far surer of what is kind than I am of what is true.
3. Enough is a banquet.

RE: Eddie Van Halen dead at 65 from cancer

may be a little off-topic, but since I mentioned it ( and I didn’t “ need” that job, I was moonlighting from nursing so if the job clashed with nursing, I would walk...) do you think it was fair for them to terminate her? I know there are two trains of thought on this: they couldn’t “ do” for her what they couldn’t do for everyone. BUT, people have other things to do with their lives besides work—-just wondering what you think or how you see this. ( I think it would have been fair if they had her work her mandatory overtime another day, as it cropped up at least three times a month...what is “fair” here? What if the whole shop had Van Halen tickets? Just one of those CS questions...professor

RE: Eddie Van Halen dead at 65 from cancer

i was working extra shifts at a production job and one of the women I worked with had top-tier Van Halen tickets (Portland). Well, there was mandatory overtime that day, and the supervisor would absolutely not let her off. She forfeited her job to go to the concert.

RE: Growing up in the North

(TheDino)— I noticed County Kilkenny, and it brought to mind several songs concerning the region. So sorry—I seem to sometimes remember bits and pieces, other songs I know top to bottom, even though they’re 20+ verses! ( like “Johnny McCaldoo)— one of the ‘ bits and pieces I can remember has the stanza,
“ but I takes me delight, in the juice of the barley, an’ courtin’ pretty girls in the mornin’—0
Part of that song goes something like, “ stand and deliver, for I am a bold deceiver..”

Is that enough for you to connect the dots for me?dunno

RE: Can anyone posting in the cs forums still wear clothes they wore in college; high school maybe?

Talk about durability—-about 8 years ago I finally had to throw out my pair of Wolverine hiking/camping boots. ( waffle-stompers). My step-father, in a weak moment- had bought them for me at Portland Outdoor Store when I was a high-school freshman. I wore them most of the time- that means, with constant use, they lasted 39 years. I also had made a chambray shirt in “Bachelor Survival” ( Boy’s Home-Ec). Although it had two left sleeves ( I got a ‘C+) it lasted until 1999–about 26 years. I still have my graduation cap and tassel...

RE: Your country

now, my family heritage is full Scot. Our “ culture” was was/is rife with these beliefs:

1. We pinch pennies ( very, very frugal)
2. We add oats to virtually everything
3. We let the livestock share our living quarters
4. The men have “ something to write home about”blushing
5. We’re gruff. ( my grandma said “ a wee crunchy but soft in th’ middle”

RE: Why are women so reluctant to give compliments

i don’t subscribe to generalizations and stereotyping. Many women have been “ complimentary” to me, and certainly no ulterior motive(s)..... here’s a thought:

Women do seem to have self-preservation ‘defenses’. And, giving compliments puts them in an arguably vulnerable position, at least for some, some of the time. The “ world” as it were, demands much ( VERY MUCH) from its women, yet pales in fair recognition. ( in my opinion, women must work harder, longer, and more diligently for the same benevolent equity that seems to come more easily for men. So, perhaps it is a bulwark of strength for them to be conservative in their complimentary gifts. Jmo

RE: Your country

i could be wrong, but according to my sociology professor at Portland State, igloos are STILL being used in remote regions. I’ve never understood how there can be a fire inside it and not melt it—confused )

RE: Your country

OREGON: (a few misconceptions -and possibly correct!)

1. We wear Levi’s, red checkered shirts and eyelet-lace waffle-stompers
2. We live in cabins and chop wood and cook in fireplaces
3. We all smoke weed
4. We hate anyone not born here
5. Road rage is our state hobby
6. Everyone is going to hell—-(except us)
7. We like to be naked
8. Livestock and horse-drawn wagons get the right-of-way *

* this is actually true in most counties, and some other states
