Yes it can happen, but still eventually the first flushes of attraction whether mental or physical will give over to the common sense of does this person really have what can make you happy long term, or are they really someone you could be with for any length of time?
I agree with Burt, the idea of moderators diffusing situations is good. Often just talking in private chat can set someone straight and they settle down often.
It's only very few who come in just to cause mayhem and make it unpleasant for all.
I have to admit to having been a moderator on a chat room over here. I do think I prefer forums to chat rooms. And personally feel there is far too much freedom given here. Making the forums very nasty far too often.
I'm not sure our character is based on what other people tell us, we are what we are and it is much more as how they see us. It can be quite a reality check sometimes to find out what others think of us. A text I recieved recently was quite harsh, but they had not read my text correctly and their answer did not reflect my request, does that define something in them? On the other hand, two friends helped me with personal references for a new job in the last week and they both showed such support I was quite warmed by their words.
Everyone defines us differently, mostly depending on how well they know us.
Same things as makes a man change his mind I suppose.
You fall out of love and see what a controlling, mean and selfish so and so he is and that he is the reason you feel on edge all the time and that everything he said was ok is not.
Well that's in my case, but we all change over time in subtle ways and it's not always a growing together process.
You have to learn from your experiences and find yourself again.

I find myself agreeing with Yami that it is all in the communication skills. But also we should all be more truthful in what we say, so as not to mislead or be misled.
