Cats are believed to have been ‘domesticatted’ first about 5000 years ago in the Sudan, then part of the greater Egyptian empire. This was not to be kept as pets, but to protect the grain against rodents. While excavating an ancient burial site, archaeologists found bones of humans, cats and mice buried in the same grave in Cyprus.
In ancient Egypt cats were treated as gods; worshipped in the temples. The cat was a very important symbol in the Egyptian religion.
People were compelled by law to care for cats. The punishment for harming or killing a cat was swift and harsh. Diodorus Siculus said:
Whoever kills a cat in Egypt is condemned to death, whether he committed this crime deliberately or not. The people gather and kill him. An unfortunate Roman, who accidentally killed a cat, could not be saved, either by King Ptolemy of Egypt or by the fear which Rome inspired.
There was a total ban on the export of cats to other countries, but Phoenician traders stole some and sold them in Europe. In Europe they quickly multiplied and, because of their willingness to kill rodents without eating the grain, became very popular. Because of their good toilet habits people embraced them in their homes.
The Church soon associated them with witches and therefore the devil itself and started a 1000 year cat hunt that would almost exterminate all cats in Europe by 1400 AD. On religious days cats were often thrown off the spires of churches and cathedrals.
The rodent population exploded and the Black Death killed almost 100 million people in Europe as a direct result. Only by putting an end to the killing of cats, the Black Death was brought under control.
It is estimated that the number of stray cats today are more than double that of dogs, but you don’t see them as often, because of their promiscuity and ability to fend for themselves.
You never own a cat. Cats keep humans to pet them. Look well after your kitty; if you don’t he’ll simply find himself another human.

Just to prove they don't own those cats! I though you were having me on the other day about the tuits. I did not know they really existed! I almost wet myself when I first heard the old man!

Hi
Wel, cats are way too smart to eat rat poisen. What probably happened is that the cat ate a poisened mouse or rat. But why use poisen when you have a cat around? Like with Virgo, even my neighbours' cats have the run of my house. Most welcome - esp now while my kitty is still to young to hunt. Shame, he saw a rat the other day and ran away!
This is Chinese charactor = CAT.
Yes, Cats are very worshiped by Ancient Egyptians.Their mystery and independence attract to me. good blog.
And for the record, you can not trust a little kitty because you consider it too smart to eat poison... I've seen and heard of a lot of cats that has eaten some sort of poison. Sorry, but this is the truth, you can not trust a cat or a dog this way.
Is this cat too mercy to...?
CAT,your blog let me forget the TV news,I should go now, enjoy your good day.
Hi Welela, I hear you and note it, but maybe our cats here in SA are brighter!
When I was in high school something strange happened. My father always kept his garage locked (I made too much mess without cleaning) and he used rat poisen in there. Then my cat (always had a cat) got very ill and almost died. The vet said it was poisen.
The cat used to sit at the door waiting for the mice to come out. My dad stopped using poisen and made a small cat door in the big door to let the cat in, but keep me out. The cat still killed mice, but he never ate them again. He just left them where he killed them.
My assumption: He knew what made him sick!
I'm worried about this cat. I hope the mouse don't eat him.
All nine lives....
That cat just want to have a rest after a full meal,When wake up again, the situation will be up side down...
Yes, all those things you said of cats are true, and then you did not even mention the 'nail polishing' and the late night serenades during ‘cat month’ (August here in SA) and the back chatting; no respect!. Luckily I don’t keep a sand tray. I learned from my dad. I have a cat door.
But what the hell? I had worse companions!
@ Ummka
My cats drinking beer? Never! My previous cats drank good vintage wine from a stemmed glass. 'SophistiCATed' drunkards they were! The current one is still too young to drink.
@ Gladioluss
Hmm, maybe you should teach him not to play with his food!
