Cats are believed to have been ‘domesticatted’ first about 5000 years ago in the Sudan, then part of the greater Egyptian empire. This was not to be kept as pets, but to protect the grain against rodents.

While excavating an ancient burial site, archaeologists found bones of humans, cats and mice buried in the same grave in Cyprus.

In ancient Egypt cats were treated as gods; worshipped in the temples. The cat was a very important symbol in the Egyptian religion.

People were compelled by law to care for cats. The punishment for harming or killing a cat was swift and harsh. Diodorus Siculus said:

Whoever kills a cat in Egypt is condemned to death, whether he committed this crime deliberately or not. The people gather and kill him. An unfortunate Roman, who accidentally killed a cat, could not be saved, either by King Ptolemy of Egypt or by the fear which Rome inspired.

There was a total ban on the export of cats to other countries, but Phoenician traders stole some and sold them in Europe. In Europe they quickly multiplied and, because of their willingness to kill rodents without eating the grain, became very popular. Because of their good toilet habits people embraced them in their homes.

The Church soon associated them with witches and therefore the devil itself and started a 1000 year cat hunt that would almost exterminate all cats in Europe by 1400 AD. On religious days cats were often thrown off the spires of churches and cathedrals.

The rodent population exploded and the Black Death killed almost 100 million people in Europe as a direct result. Only by putting an end to the killing of cats, the Black Death was brought under control.

It is estimated that the number of stray cats today are more than double that of dogs, but you don’t see them as often, because of their promiscuity and ability to fend for themselves.

You never own a cat. Cats keep humans to pet them. Look well after your kitty; if you don’t he’ll simply find himself another human.

Thank you for a nice blog about my beloved cats. I am and I will always be a cat lover. I do love the fact that cats does not bark so they do not make much noise. I hate barking dogs... they are not cute, they are just noise. Another reason why I love cats is because I grew up with one, her name was Siri and she took good care of me when I was a little girl. She had to die early, becausew she had eaten rat poison. Then it took me some years to get a new cat. her name was Missy, she was all black and very special in her ways. The came Tobias, my first male cat. He was something for himself, he was the best cat ever. Then one morning when I woke up, he did not greet me by the door. I always let him out in the morning for him to go potty. But he did not show up. I went out looking for him, calling his name and talk to people who might have seen him, but he was gone. Around this time a neighbor of us had killed a little kitty baby with a piece of wood. He claimed to kill the cat because it attacked his kitty. It was a baby, for heavens! My ex and a friend did find the little kitty in a dumpster, took it to a vet and we turned this guy in to the police. Big case in the news. This guy was very hated for some time, you do not kill a cat baby. So I am sorry to think this way, I think he took my Tobias away too. I never ever saw him again, he was gone. Then came Sofus and Sophie, I still have Miss Sophie, but Sofus died of FIV in January 2009. She was born with it, so nothing to do. So now Miss Sophie and I live happy days as to elderly ladies... she is 13 in May and I will be 53 in July. rolling on the floor laughing

@ Welela
Hi
Wel, cats are way too smart to eat rat poisen. What probably happened is that the cat ate a poisened mouse or rat. But why use poisen when you have a cat around? Like with Virgo, even my neighbours' cats have the run of my house. Most welcome - esp now while my kitty is still to young to hunt. Shame, he saw a rat the other day and ran away!

wave This is Chinese charactor = CAT.
Yes, Cats are very worshiped by Ancient Egyptians.Their mystery and independence attract to me. good blog. thumbs up
It's well know here in Norway that cats eat rat poison... NO matter how smart they are considered. This was a long time ago, I was only a little girl at 4 or 5, and it was the neighbor where I grew up who had put the rat poison out. Not us... are you crazy? I would never, ever put out any poison my cat could get to, but now they have something to protect bigger animals like cats and dogs from it.. only the mice and rat can get to it.
And for the record, you can not trust a little kitty because you consider it too smart to eat poison... I've seen and heard of a lot of cats that has eaten some sort of poison. Sorry, but this is the truth, you can not trust a cat or a dog this way.hug

Hi Welela, I hear you and note it, but maybe our cats here in SA are brighter!

When I was in high school something strange happened. My father always kept his garage locked (I made too much mess without cleaning) and he used rat poisen in there. Then my cat (always had a cat) got very ill and almost died. The vet said it was poisen.

The cat used to sit at the door waiting for the mice to come out. My dad stopped using poisen and made a small cat door in the big door to let the cat in, but keep me out. The cat still killed mice, but he never ate them again. He just left them where he killed them.

My assumption: He knew what made him sick!
Hi Gladioluss,

I'm worried about this cat. I hope the mouse don't eat him.

Yes, all those things you said of cats are true, and then you did not even mention the 'nail polishing' and the late night serenades during ‘cat month’ (August here in SA) and the back chatting; no respect!. Luckily I don’t keep a sand tray. I learned from my dad. I have a cat door.

But what the hell? I had worse companions!

My cats drinking beer? Never! My previous cats drank good vintage wine from a stemmed glass. 'SophistiCATed' drunkards they were! The current one is still too young to drink.
