Smoking In Bed

During the last seven years emphysema killed four people I knew well; one of them related. Three were males and one female. Their ages ranged from 53 to 64. All of them smoked.

The female smoked for fifteen years, one of the males for thirty years while the other two smoked since childhood; all of them about 20 per day.

Not all people who smoke get emphysema and not everyone who get emphysema smokes, but the occurance of emphysema is much higher amongst smokers.

Then why do some people smoke since childhood and never get emphysema, while others smoke for fifteen or twenty years and get it.confused

The persons I mentioned all had the same habit. They frequently smoked while in bed; flat on their backs. Even when waking up in the night. Could this be significant?dunno

Have a great day!

Well, that's a theory. I smoked for 30 years or so, but never smoked in bed, yet I am diagnosed with a little bit of a emphysema.
But who am I to tell why some get it and some doesn't?
IN fact I have not thought much of it...hug teddybear
catfoot, my uncled died of emphyzema. he smoked in bed.
Hi Wel,

I don't know if it is a theory; I did not read anything up. It is just something I thought about for a while.

Yeah, I know it is just a theory, a little bit interesting too. I'm gonna go take care of my little grandson today, his mom has to work some and he should not be in the kinder garden today. So grandma have to come take care... I can't wait. applause hug teddybear
It might have a lot to do with lung capacity and the the strength of the Inhalation ie the Physical impact of the hot smoke. 50 to 60 degrees C or so I hear dunno
Hi Who,

Yes, I know about your uncle. He is included in my four.

My one uncle also died of emphysema. He stopped smoking five years before his death, but started again about a month before he died. By then he could not walk to the toilet without being out ofbreath. I think he must have smoked his last cigarette (in bed) about 20 minutes before he died!
wine cheers

Thank you Aussie,

I'll read it tonight!

Longevity runs in families.

My grandmother (mom's mother0 died at 102 under sedation after falling on the staircase. Both my grandfathers died deep in their nineties. If they did not get cancer they would still have been alive. My father (85) still drives his own car. I look forward to a grand old age.

Hello Cat ,
I am Gastro-Enterologist but from my knowledge in internal medicine , smoking in bed is not the reason for Emphysema , even smoking itself is not a reason for it but it is a risk factor ( you got me ) , so we can find people with emphysema and they even never smoked a stick , and we can find people smoke for 50 years and do not develop emphysema , Emphysema is a problem with lung elasticity ( as a simplified term ) .
Smoking is only a risk factor not a reason .
Thank you Omda,

A very professional comment and I understand it much better now. thumbs up

As you said smoking is a risk factor and statistics prove that. I accept that it is not the cause of lung cancer as nonsmokers also get it.

I'm just wonderng if any researh had been made in that direction. I could not find any stats to the effect. Just maybe it might be an even bigger risk factor. Just wondering?

I read the other day that, not conclusively so, but research showed a larger tendency to develop colon cancer if you use a lot of wheat products, esp white bread. That is what set me thinking!
beer cheers
I am not encouraging people to smoke huh do not get me wrong , I gave up smoking almost 6 months now after almost 12 years and I feel much better I can climb stairs now without being out of breath , I often do not wait for the elevator :)
I'm in place, my grandson is sick today, so will be inside.
