It's My Life (A short History) Part2

I loved that place, acres and acres of woods out in the badlands of deepest darkest Norfolk, (where the rush hour consists of the postman and the milkman )
My only real saving grace at this time was that I was not a bully (unless they were a bully and in that case it was, "Stand by to have yer heid kicked in, yer scunner")
In the first year I cheeked the teachers, I didn't give a monkey about rules, at least once a week I had a detention to serve, but I was a smart arse,( Good grades all round just for spite ). I settled down a bit after a while, (only a bit mind you I was still a very wild child), and did really well without having to put much effort in to it.
At the age of 16 I left school with 3 'A'Lvl's, 6'O'Lvl's,a whole bunch of CSE's, and an attitude.
When I left school I didn't go back to my family's house.

All through my late teens and my early 20's I hated the world, everyone, and every thing, in it including me,(except my motor bike). So I cheerfully set course on a cycle of self destructive behavior,( "Arr full speed ahead!" "Aye aye! Cap'un!")
I was not a nice person at all.(To put it mildly! You could say I was an violent unfeeling little sh1t head and you wouldn't be wrong!)
As I saw it at the time there are only a few problems that could not be solved by punching somebody's lights out, and I was very good at problem solving.

(cont in part 3 ) (if you wish to comment do it under Part 3)

As the human body ages.....

across the life span, we see how that which we once knew, morphs toward the almost unrecognizable. In our mom's case, being bed bound was merely the start of the journey. The new need to be so dependent on others for most, even some quite personal, activities of daily life, can be quite a blow to formerly vibrant and independent types, especially for those who spent a lifetime caring for family ----six kids, and a gaggle of others, while working factory jobs. As in watching children mature between intervals of absence, even the small differences seem striking. Here, the tremors, depression and lack of facial expression of Parkinson's syndrome, skin darkening about extremities as one sign of failing blood circulation, labored breathing, hearing loss requiring the TV to sound like a rock concert, dentition and scalp hair long gone, and as the last days approach, that twinkle in the eyes---a sure sign of life energy, begins to fade. Almost gone as well, the ability to speak and use language, often blunt enough for us to hear what we usually needed, like it or not, and a sure sign of high intelligence in the absence of formal education---all now only soft murmurs. But rarely, a word or two can be understood. As on taking my leave, squeezing her hands and kissing her forehead. I love you mom. She responded lovingly in kind---clear enough for even the deaf to hear. Aa.

The Pressure Cooker

Stove top pressure cookers have done nothing but terrify me so you couldn't give me one. However the digital counter top ones stole my heart after I saw a friend brag about it on Facebook. Mine is called the InstanntPot or IP for short. You would have to pry it out of my cold dead hands now before I would give it up.

On a side note this blog is directed at someone here as a lure to write. I think two members have bought a pressure cooker because of my blogging love for it. One has used it and one still hasn't (I'm guilty of this as well - buying something then not using it)

It doesn't just pressure cook, it steams, stews, has a crock pot setting, saute, rice cooker and more. I love this damn gadget. I've spent lots of time on you tube watching recipes in the IP or on Pinterest. Can't tell you how many things I've cooked, including eggs, lots and lots of eggs. The best feature is how easy to maintain as it cleans so easy PLUS I can't burn anything in it when I forget. It knows and keeps it warm all by itself. Having Dad call me in the evening to tell me dinner was delicious melts my heart as I'm glad he still remembers who I am. He is not a compliment giver either, he usually teases me on what I did wrong so feeding him something he loved feels damn good. I won't have much longer to do this.

Since Mom's accident the IP has been a God send to make one pot dinners. The IP has the inner pot which is what you cook in. I can take the inner pot out, go to my folks and put it in there IP on warm at anytime of the day, (bring their inner pot home as we have the same IP) then they can have their meal anytime they want and I got to deliver it at my convenience. If I forget to defrost something for dinner, no problem just throw the frozen hunk in the pot and it still comes out delicious.

Lots of people make cheesecake in thier pots, I haven't tried that yet. I bought the spring form pan for it but haven't had the desire to make it. I'm so used to flying solo that planning a meal to feed more is the biggest challenge I'm facing. However while writing this blog chicken and dumplings came to mind so that's what for dinner. Well I will call Mom and see if she wants what is on my menu, if so then that frozen bird is getting cooked today.

PAY ME (part two)

THE NIGHT my father died in England, me and my brothers were ripped from sleep in that same room at a disorienting, early hour. I still remember the lightbulb’s harsh flare.

My brothers were summoned to the kitchen. I was left wee and cold among the thrown-back blankets, straining to catch snatches of the low agonised talk that had invaded the house. I heard “massive heart attack”, “bringing him home”, “coffin closed”.

They said I was too small to be at the funeral.

The house soured after that. My mother fell into a dark eclipse that let out neither brightness nor warmth. Thick shadows seemed to gradually fill the rooms, forcing expulsions. Seeing too much, saying too little, I endured a long, growing up wait until escape.

I administer two legacies now. A house that sits boarded up, awaiting sale, empty save for one back room, filled to bursting with oddments. I can never get around to its clearing.

And I have memories that have blended with imagination to take on, in their frequent revisiting, the surreal quality of recurrent dream.

In one such journey, I see myself creeping with coin in hand, moving clumsily in the dark around shrouded furniture to disinter my moneybox once more.

But when I press my penny down, up out of the black cloak comes a man’s face unsettlingly familiar and not unlike my own, and a grip I cannot resist seizes the hand that holds my offering and pulls me downwards into a deep and whispering dark.

My granny was right: “Sure, that oul’ thing’ll only scar’ the child.”

Never Thought I Would See the Day

I saw my Dad take a few steps with his walker, the nurse behind him with wheelchair. In my life I never thought I could write a blog about see my father take a few steps. Impressive a few steps are when young and learning and just as impressive when old and dying.

He also responded to the excited praise much as a child does. It was a cute moment.

The one thing I have to say about my itty bitty Mom is she went against all the medical systems to get him home and I assure you they put her threw the typical government red tape but Dad is better, much better. More alert with a tad bit better memory than in the facility but his memory over the last 94 years really sucks, not sure where it went but it is mostly gone. Flashes come and go.

In my heart I can't imagine what this is like on Mom besides the fact that she has turned into a skeleton with a bit of skin draped on it.

Christmas Eve is coming up!

In my family, we have a tradition. Every Christmas Eve, we get together and enjoy some good food, some good conversation and some good times together.

In my family, Christmas Eve starts at noon on the 24th, and can sometimes run until midnight. Some of my family members attend church, but I am not really interested in attending church, so I just stay home, and usually I am watching tv or preparing something for later on in the evening. Once people are home from church, the table is filled with candy, cookies and drinks. Either soda or water for the kids, and beer for the adults. The food is then prepared at about 2.30 - 3 pm, so it'll be ready for 6 pm, when we sit down to eat.

Usually, the food is traditional Danish Christmas food: roasted pork, roasted duck, two types of potatoes (regular and caramelized), pickled cabbage, thick gravy and sometimes, we also have heated potato chips, as a side dish for the gravy.

After the food, we bring each bring out three small gifts, and place them in the middle of the table. It can be everything from a small toy to candy. There is a catch, though: All the gifts has to have a maximum value of 30 DKK, which is just under $5. Then, we bring out a dice and a raffle cup. We then take turns rolling the dice. If your dice lands on a six, you get to take a gift. Once all the gifts have been taken, the timer is set. Usually for about 15 minutes. For those next 15 minutes, if you roll a six, you are allowed to take a gift from someone. The aim of the game is to have as many gifts as possible, by the time the clock rings. It's always good fun, and it's always a huge hit.

Once we have distributed all the small gifts, it's time for the thing that no other country has: Risalamande. It is a dessert made of rice pudding mixed with whipped cream, sugar, vanilla, and chopped almonds. It is served cold with either warm or cold cherry sauce. Just to demonstrate how cruel/brilliant us Danes are, there is a tradition to the risalamande: a whole almond is added to the dessert, and the person who finds it wins a small prize such as a marzipan pig, a chocolate heart or a small board game. The finder may conceal their discovery as long as possible, so that the rest of the company is forced to eat the entire dish of risalamande, even after they have already devoured a large Christmas dinner.

If people are still awake by that time, it's time for the Christmas gifts. At this time, more candy, cookies and drinks are brought out. Usually, we have enough drinks to fill a swimming pool, and combined with what seems like about 30 kilos of food and snacks, most people go into a food coma. I am usually not hungry for the next few days after a Christmas Eve in my family.

Everyone is welcome - even friends. If someone doesn't have a place to celebrate Christmas Eve, they are welcome to spend it with my family. The only demand is three small gifts, and if they want to bring Christmas gifts for everyone, they are welcome to do that as well, but that's not a requirement.

I am looking forward to this years celebrations! We are going to be seven people, so it's gonna be a lot of fun!
