when our health is irreversible

A friend of mine is very sick. Lung cancer. She smoked for the last forty years of her life. Today she is in the intensive care unit and is waiting for a lung transplant. A most painful illness. Seeing her with all the gadgets that helps her breath air is just so difficult and very emotionally draining.

I can't believe that with all the warnings on these disease inducing habits, millions refuse to arrest or stop and it makes me wonder just how difficult is it to quit smoking.

She is my age but I can see how her skin and her look had been ruined by the toxic of this unhealthy habit. With force labor to speak, she is thanking me so much for being there for her and how lucky I am to have never smoked.

I don't think it is a matter of luck for me to not smoke or have never smoke. It is a matter of discipline and control, imo. I am thankful and of course happy none of my children nor their husbands smoke in spite of the fact that their dad did.

I just wanted to share how my days went the past few days and I am hoping she will get better and be home soon.

Now it is time for me to go to bed.

60.....plus....

As a person gets older, changes occur in all parts of the body, including the brain. Certain parts of the brain shrink, including those important to learning and other complex mental activities. In certain brain regions, communication between neurons may be less effective. Blood flow in the brain may decrease

Aging is the time-related deterioration of the physiological functions necessary for survival and reproduction. The phenotypic changes of senescence (which affect all members of the species) are not to be confused with diseases of senescence, such as cancer and heart disease (which affect individuals)

Exposure to light is a top cause of premature aging: Sun exposure causes many skin problems. Ultraviolet (UV) light and exposure to sunlight age your skin more quickly than it would age naturally. The result is called photoaging, and it's responsible for 90% of visible changes to your skin.

Advantages to society of older persons include their lower criminal activity, greater political participation, increasing voluntary organization participation, work abilities, and visual perception abilities.

Worst Things about Aging that You Wish Grandparents Warned You About
Dull and thinning hair. ...
The turkey neck. ...
Spend more time in hospitals. ...
The knees and joints hurt. ...
Sore feet. ...
The body slows down. ...
Cognitive decline. ...
Plan early for retirement.

Body weakness is a common complaint of old people. It can be associated with several geriatric syndromes, including frailty, sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass and strength), functional decline, failure to thrive, frequent falls, incontinence, and inability to ambulate.

Effective solutions to deal with old age problems
Keep yourself in good health. ...
Follow medical advice. ...
Practice cleanliness. ...
Prevent accidental injuries. ...
Cultivate right mental attitude. ...
Keep yourself busy and active. ...
Nurture relationships.

What to eat
fruit and vegetables.
potatoes, bread, rice, pasta and other starchy foods.
dairy and alternatives.
beans, pulses, fish, eggs and other proteins.
oils and spreads.

Calcium and Vitamin D: ...
Vitamin B12: As you get older, your ability to absorb Vitamin B12 can diminish, which means you may need to include Vitamin B12 rich foods in your diet. ...
Dietary Fibre: Including fibre-rich foods in your diet will help you stay healthy.

Why do women live longer than men?

All across the world, women enjoy longer lifespans. David Robson investigates the reasons why, and whether men can do anything about it.

One early idea was that men work themselves into an early grave. Whether working in a mine or ploughing the land, they put extra stress on their bodies and amassed injuries that caught up with them later in life. Yet if that were the case, you might expect the gap to be closing, as both men and women converge on the same, sedentary jobs. In fact, the difference in lifespan has remained stable even throughout monumental shifts in society.

Nor has it been easy to prove that men are more abusive of their bodies. Factors such as smoking, drinking, and overeating may partly explain why size of the gender gap varies so widely between countries. Russian men are likely to die 13 years earlier Russian women, for instance, partly because they drink and smoke more heavily.
But the fact is that female chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, and gibbons also consistently outlive the males of the group, and you do not see apes – male or female – with cigarettes hanging out of their mouths and beer glasses in their hands.

Instead, it would seem like the answer lies in our evolution. “Of course, social and lifestyle factors do have a bearing, but there does appear to be something deeper engrained in our biology,” says Tom Kirkwood, who studies the biological basis for ageing at Newcastle University in the UK.

There are many potential mechanisms – starting with the bundles of DNA known as chromosomes within each cell. Chromosomes come in pairs, and whereas women have two X chromosomes, men have an X and a Y chromosome.
That difference may subtly alter the way that cells age. Having two X chromosomes, women keep double copies of every gene, meaning they have a spare if one is faulty. Men don’t have that back-up. The result is that more cells may begin to malfunction with time, putting men at greater risk of disease.

Among the other alternatives is the “jogging female heart” hypothesis – the idea that a woman’s heart rate increases during the second half of the menstrual cycle, offering the same benefits as moderate exercise. The result is delayed risk of cardiovascular disease later in life. Or it could also be a simple matter of size. Taller people have more cells in their bodies, meaning they are more likely to develop harmful mutations; bigger bodies also burn more energy, which could add to wear and tear within the tissues themselves. Since men tend to be taller than women, they should therefore face more long-term damage.

Eunuchs were 130 times more likely to reach 100, compared to other men. Even the pampered kings did not come close.
But perhaps the true reason lies in the testosterone that drives most other male characteristics, from deeper voices and hairier chests to balding crowns.

Evidence comes from an unexpected place: the Imperial Court of the Chosun Dynasty in Korea. Korean scientist Han-Nam Park recently analysed the detailed records of court life from the 19th Century, including information about 81 eunuchs whose testicles had been removed before puberty. His analyses revealed that the eunuchs lived for around 70 years – compared to an average of just 50 years among the other men in the court.

Although not all studies of other types of eunuch have shown such pronounced differences, overall it seems that people (and animals) without testicles do live longer.

The exact reasons are elusive, but David Gem at University College London speculates that the damage may be done by the end of puberty. For speculative evidence, he points to the sad cases of mental health patients, institutionalised in the USA in the early 20th Century. A few were forcibly castrated as part of their “treatment”. Like the Korean eunuchs, they too lived for longer than the average inmate – but only if they had been sterilised before the age of 15.

How Big Pharma's Money Is Affecting Our Health And

Turning down a prescription from your doctor might not seem like a smart decision. However, recent research revealing the influence of pharmaceutical companies on doctors in many disciplines makes it clear that your prescription may have less to do with your health and more to do with a paycheck.

The most powerful pharmaceutical companies in the U.S. are paying doctors, teaching hospitals and other organizations to sell their products. In fact, in just over a year, these companies spent $3.49 billion in disclosed payments.

Even more, common names like Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer spent significantly more on marketing than they did on research and development of their drugs, with the former spending more than double, and the latter spending 72% the difference – and these companies aren’t alone, 90% of pharmaceutical companies are prioritizing marketing.

“Big pharma” is going above and beyond to ensure their products are being consumed by Americans, and their efforts have been successful. The U.S. spends $1,112 per capita on prescription drugs – more than any other country, and four times more than Mexico.

As well, in 2010, the U.S. consumed 99% of the world’s hydrocodone and 88% of oxycodone – two common painkillers – when only accounting for 5% of the world’s population.

Dr. Gordon Schiff suggests that doctors and hospitals should take a “conservative prescribing” approach which recommends prevention and lifestyle changes as opposed to prescription drugs. As well, education on the adverse effects of these drugs will help to prevent the influence of these companies.

Does Donald Trump exhibit the dark triad of personality disorders?

What is the Dark Triad?
This popular term was coined in 2002 by Paulhus and Williams. Dark Triad refers to three unusually negative personality traits – narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism. The latter two share more traits with each other than with narcissists. Generally, the term refers to individuals with “subclinical” symptoms, meaning that they may not necessarily fully have narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) or anti-social personality disorder (ASPD). Machiavellianism arose out of Machiavelli’s philosophy and is not a mental health disorder.

Narcissism is characterized by the pursuit of ego gratification, vanity, a sense of superiority, grandiosity, dominance, and entitlement.
Machiavellianism is marked by manipulation – a calculating, duplicitous, and amoral personality, focused on self-interest and personal gain.
Psychopathy is distinguished by callousness, impulsivity, and enduring antisocial and bold behaviour.

So we can see a direct correlation between all three traits and D. Trump, indeed, many psychologists have stated their belief that should Trump take a Triad test his score would be amongst the highest taken.

I'm sure we can see many with similar traits, but can they see them themselves?

In the news...

Every day, there's at least one Trump 'something' the media finds important to post about the president. There are way too many to remember all of them, but some highlights of the past few weeks:

Buying Greenland.
King of Israel.
Wanting to be allowed more than 2 terms.
Giving 'made up awards' to himself.
Having distanced himself from anything related to Jeffery Epstein for more than a decade, he told the media they should be looking at Clinton.

Ending the week with the best one I've heard all year...
Trump suggested we fire nuclear weapons at hurricanes to stop them hitting America.

I've tagged this blog under health because the man needs to see a mental health specialist.

Evacuation Alert

Waking to the acrid smell of smoke and the *tic*, *tic*, *tic* of the blinds against the window sill, I dreaded what today would bring. The wildfire burning only 6 miles from me continues to rage in steep terrain, making it difficult for firefighters to combat it.

Yesterday afternoon at 4pm an evacuation alert was issued for the houses in that area due to the spreading fire. Concerned, I asked my daughter, who works in operations for Emergency Management (on loan from her regular job), what to pack in a go-bag. She advised me her home was also on evacuation alert, although she herself was in another city. She gave me a list of a few things and sent me a link as to what to pack.

My entire province is under a state of emergency due to the number of wildfires burning up our forests and threatening cities. Over 50% of the fires have been human caused, either by tossed cigarette butts (I can't believe they still sell those friggen things with the amount of damage and devastation they do) or campfires despite a campfire ban.

The one near me was caused by some idiot driving his motor home with a flat tire on the rim. Sparks from the rim hitting the pavement started the fire. Yes, that makes me mad. In fact, totally pissed off that someone was so stupid to drive their vehicle like that, putting others at risk.

One person on a fb post said lots of people didn't have the money to put new tires on their vehicles. Really? Then maybe they shouldn't be driving it, putting their own families at risk, and now due to their selfishness, putting everyone else in the area at risk.

They can't afford new tires? Well, I hope someone got their license plate and let's see how well they can afford to pay the fine for starting the wildfire. Stupid a-holes. I'm really pissed off about this, mainly because it's so preventable if people had any sense these days.

Yes, I'm worried about the fire getting closer and I'm sick of the smokey skies that we've been under for the past two weeks, when we should be enjoying blue skies and sunshine. We see grey skies all winter, and the past two years we've lived in it half the summer (which is only two months long), due to wildfires.

I didn't go for my usual bike ride this morning due to the heavy smoke and have decided I'll pack up my bike and head south again to find clear skies. I'm not on evacuation alert yet, but I fear it's imminent as rain is not in the forecast for at least two weeks - and then only a shower. Unless we get a significant amount, it won't make any difference to the current fire situation.

So that's my rant for today. Trying to find somewhere to go that isn't inundated with smoke. And please, no defence of stupid people that drive their vehicles on the rims. Nothing's going to make me believe there's any kind of reasonable excuse for that kind of abject stupidity.

Smoking cigarettes.

In this day and age, even by a few health professionals, behaviors drenched in denial, even with well known harmful effects around their own kids, led around by their noses by big tabacco business adverts, and lots more. Interested in comments.
