Senior Moments

I know... I know... we ALL have them, or have had them, and will have them if you be so blessed to live long enough. Long enough?... well, it is said "Senior Moments" start around the age of 40, and continues as part of the aging process. And we ALL are going forward in age, not backward.

The definition of "senior moments" is said to be, "an instance of momentary forgetfulness or confusion that is attributed to the aging process."dunnouh oh

The truth about senior moments is, that it is a nonmedical term for mental glitches related to early signs of alzheimers and dementia disease, and it can be rather scary for some who experience them. Of course, we all have laughed when we've experienced those moments of not remembering where we placed this or that, or why for what reason we went into the kitchen or bathroom. We have also laughed at others who have done some funny and silly stuff during one of their "senior moments".

About two months back, I had purchased a large container of liquid dish detergent, and when I got ready to use it, I couldn't for the life of me find where I had placed it. I thought maybe I left it at the store check-out counter, so I called, and was told to bring back my receipt and they would replace it for me. But I was determined not to give up just yet, because I knew in the back of my mind, I had brought it home. But because I needed to use the detergent two days later, I ran out and got another one. Three days passed, after I had purchased a new bottle, I made a spill and had to clean it up... low-and behold!!]/b]... there was the detergent right in the fruit tray in the fridge where I had been going in and out of, for almost a week unnoticed. I was so out-done I could only scream out in laughter at myself, and called my friend and together we had a good laugh rolling on the floor laughing frustrated

In posting this blog, I wish to state that I believe that there are genuine cases that need psychiatric intervention but in a lot of instances, what are termed “mental ilnesses” are “manufactured” by the psychiatric profession and Big Pharma.


Normality Is an Endangered Species: Psychiatric Fads and Overdiagnosis


Fads in psychiatric diagnosis come and go and have been with us as long as there has been psychiatry. The fads meet a deeply felt need to explain, or at least to label, what would otherwise be unexplainable human suffering and deviance. In recent years the pace has picked up and false “epidemics” have come in bunches involving an ever-increasing proportion of the population. We are now in the midst of at least 3 such epidemics—of autism, attention deficit, and childhood bipolar disorder. And unless it comes to its senses, DSM-5 threatens to provoke several more (hypersexuality, binge eating, mixed anxiety depression, minor neurocognitive, and others).

Fads punctuate what has become a basic background of overdiagnosis. Normality is an endangered species. The NIMH estimates that, in any given year, 25 percent of the population (that’s almost 60 million people) has a diagnosable mental disorder. A prospective study found that, by age thirty-two, 50 percent of the general population had qualified for an anxiety disorder, 40 percent for depression, and 30 percent for alcohol abuse or dependence. Imagine what the rates will be like by the time these people hit fifty, or sixty-five, or eighty. In this brave new world of psychiatric overdiagnosis, will anyone get through life without a mental disorder?

What accounts for the recent upsurge in diagnosis? I feel quite confident we can’t blame it on our brains. Human physiology and human nature change slowly if at all. Could it be that the surge in mental disorders is caused by our stressful society? I think not. There is no particular reason to believe that life is any harder now than it has always been—more likely we are the most pampered and protected generation ever to face its inevitable challenges. It is also tempting to find environmental (eg toxins) or iatrogenic causes (eg vaccinations), but there is no credible evidence supporting either of these. There is really only one viable environmental candidate to explain the growth of mental disorder—the widespread recreational use of psychotropic substances. But this cannot account for the extent of the “epidemics," particularly since most have centered on children.

No. The “epidemics” in psychiatry are caused by changing diagnostic fashions—the people don’t change, the labels do. There are no objective tests in psychiatry—no X-ray, laboratory, or exam that says definitively that someone does or does not have a mental disorder. What is diagnosed as mental disorder is very sensitive to professional and social contextual forces. Rates of disorder rise easily because mental disorder has such fluid boundaries with normality.

Frozen Shoulder Syndrome Really Hurts...

Well I have no clue as to how or why, but I got it. And its 80% debilitating because of the constant pain and inability to use the arm for little to nothing.

It started I believe a couple a weeks ago, as I try to remember back. Sometime after the 4th of July. I hadn't been sleeping well so I moved to the couch. Thinking closer to everything I need or use regularly. And easier to feed my cat and do my cat chores he he.

So I awakened to a stiff shoulder, and I'm not able to raise my arm up or out straight or carry much of anything. I could bend at the elbow, but its like my muscles won't work to raise my arm. And the pain is crazy all around the ball n socket and at rest in my forearm below the elbow and on top of my shoulder but not in my neck. So I'm completely perplexed. I'm down for the count.

What have I changed in my routine that brought this on? I recently bought a Fry Addy so my veggie oil intake went way up. And my carb potato intake as well had risen. And making my own tortilla chips with sea salt. Popcorn- gmo popcorn a couple times a week. I've been smoking more and coughing a bit more so I've strained an artery as it pains me to cough up in my shoulder. Water intake has gone way down as milk has as well.

So there ya have it pretty much. No stress at home. No strain, heavy lifting or mass exercise.

I Don't have diabetes, heart issues, a few extra lbs. Broke a wrist bone last yr and did therapy. The shoulder bothered through all that. But never a real concern then or until recent. It just came on recently and now its a whole different story. Ibprohen every four hrs and rest. No work as I am one armed now lol.

Any one heard of frozen shoulder syndrome? Any cures ? lol

Evening just as it darkens. It is Grand and calm. wow

Maybe the first and last hour of the day is the best .applause

I know it will get colder all too soon so l am enjoying this time now

No rugby today (rest day ) so no excuse there either yay

How Do You Get Awake In The Morning??

When I awake in the morning I must have coffee to revive me. Otherwise someone will try CPR! I actually can't think, talk, remember or move. SERIOUSLY! I can trip over myself while walking. rolling on the floor laughing I am a danger to one and all. I can get terrible headaches if I don't drink at least two cups. I've been known to be nasty with my words before coffee! confused Thank God the church doesn't call or stop by cheers All they would have to do is take one look at my half opened EYE and run. dunno Who knows it could be fun devil Now it's fear for everyone, cause Daddy has just brought home a loaded gun! frustrated wow cool





What wakes you up??
Can anyone else relate this morning? Do you have to do the same or worse? I'm beginning to think it's only me, guess I shall wait and see! doh mumbling help sleep

Addressing unhappiness ....

Quite often I work with people who are very unhappy in their current circumstances... The scope of these people differ, from very well educated, rich, attractive to the opposite of the continuum... Sometimes I am amazed to realise once again that there is a big difference between what we see on the surface (the white picket fence and poodle picture) and really what is happening behind a fancy front door...

I also can't help to wonder how many of life sufferings and unhappiness are not self inflicted and the acceptance of that circumstances to such a point where something breaks... only then we admit that there is a problem and seeking for help...

The following pointers , maybe to use that could enable everyone to spot and address unhappiness sooner and more effectively (based on my experience)...

Always try to improve the knowledge and skills base, learning is a life long process even for older people,
Read a lot...It enhances the basis for interesting topics and discussions...
Get your own pot where you can bloom (even if you don't have to)...The ability to be independent, gives a golden key to freedom...
Surround yourself with people who has a good influence on you... only negative people and 'takers' will take its toll over the long run...
Know what is happening in your area and what support is available... link in with a small group where you feel comfortable, loners find it very difficult to break from 'behind the fancy door circumstances'...
Spent time on your physical health... Our bodies is the vehicle of our souls...
Make the best of your features... We are not all equally pretty, but we need to be pretty for ourselves as that builds self confidence...
Make time to take stock... Regarding the most important aspects of your life... remember, your children will leave the house one day and then the question is ... what is left for you....
Address the little devils before it grows into monsters... speak up even if you need to apply a bit of humour...

Have you noticed that, in this age of information and disinformation, you can find an article, video, statistic, "scientific review", chart, or blog to support any and all of your personal biases?

I would like to see critical thinking skills come back into vogue.

Questioning ones beliefs and biases is the only way one can truly break through self imposed limitations and fears.
